I always understood the term “cult classic” as “failed at the box office due to marketing but found a following when released to video”. Iconic movies like Clue were considered bombs. The tv show Community was constantly under threat of cancellation because higher ups only looked at premier numbers and didn’t take into account the millions who watched it on Hulu on VOD or TiVo or whatever the next day or when they could get to it. Now reaction channels that cover Community skyrocket in numbers because that fanbase is always down for a rewatch with someone new. I remember Hector talking about that episode of Barry on HBO that made the joke about the actresses show coming out and then getting buried almost immediately because the algorithm spit out the show wouldn’t succeed. Art isn’t for big financial returns, it’s an investment in our mental and emotional well being. The financial return on investments for movies and shows are rarely enormous or immediate so it shouldn’t be the focus or reasoning behind making them. Deleting Willow, shelving Batgirl and Wiley E. Coyote V. Acme, that was dirty pool. There was an audience for those projects and they never got the chance to find them.

2025-02-18 11:54:41 +0000 UTCI’m glad the story around Concord’s cancellation was discussed. The gaming community all saw the writing on the wall and that it was going to be DOA. The low player count was a message sent by the community to Sony about chasing trends and making their teams create Fortnite/Overwatch clones. The reaction by Sony was very upsetting and the team should not have been shut down over it. The fear now is that an upcoming game, “Fairgame$” is going to suffer the same fate after what happened to Concord.
