Chapter 456: Marvel vs ZAGE Arcade Release

Saturday, 11 July 1993

Today marks the official release of Marvel vs ZAGE in arcades across Japan. From early morning, excited players poured into game centers eager to try the new title. Dozens of arcades reported long lines, and some venues were already packed to capacity within an hour of opening. For fans, this wasn't just the launch of another fighting game—it was a full-blown cultural event.

One of the most crowded spots is Bakudan Arcade, located just a short trip from ZAGE’s headquarters. The arcade is owned by Toki Bakurou, a sharp-tongued local legend and a longtime friend of Zaboru. Thanks to their connection, Bakudan was one of the first locations in Tokyo to receive the Marvel vs ZAGE cabinets.

Inside, the scene is electric. Crowds gather around the glowing screens of the brand-new ZAS [ZAGE ARCADE SYSTEM] units. Kids, teens, and adults alike are either playing, queueing up, or watching intense matches unfold. The energy is buzzing.

The Bakudan boys—Rikki, Sakaki, Sawada, and Kumogi—are at the front of the line. Rikki and Sakaki are up first, engaged in a fierce battle. Rikki has chosen a team of beautfull women Black Widow, Chun-Li, and Hermione, while Sakaki counters with Iron Man, Kenshiro, and Cyclops.

At the moment, Rikki’s Black Widow is dominating Cyclops with a rapid-fire combo. “Hehehe, die! You, Sakaki!” Rikki cackles as he juggles Cyclops across the screen, each move sharp and precise. Sakaki grits his teeth, waiting for his moment. Rikki's fluid inputs and fast reactions show why he’s known as the local Street Fighter ace—his instincts are razor-sharp, and it’s clear he’s bringing that same skill to this new game. In these early rounds, he’s got the upper hand.

“Damn it, Rikki... just wait,” Sakaki mutters, Sakaki had hidden moves in his sleeve.

Then it happens—Rikki misses a final input, and Sakaki seizes the opening. Cyclops fires a clean optic blast, chaining into a powerful combo. Then he tags in Kenshiro, who crashes onto the screen with Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken. Iron Man follows with a barrage of homing missiles. Black Widow’s health vanishes in a flash , thanks to Marvel vs ZAGE’s exclusive feature: dynamic teammate call-ins, which allow players to chain together team attacks with perfect timing

“What!?” Rikki yells, stunned. “How can you call in teammates like that!?”

Sakaki smirks knowingly. “Hehehe, I just know.”

It becomes obvious—Sakaki has already played early builds of the game at ZAGE HQ. He knows the mechanics, the timing, and the hidden tricks. Rikki fumes.

“You totally cheated! You only won ‘cause you already knew how it works! Damn it—ZAGE employee privilege!” Rikki snapped.

Sakaki grinned smugly. “You’re just saying that because you lost!”

Before things escalate into a rematch, a voice calls from behind. “Hey, dumbasses! Time to switch!” It’s Sawada and Kumogi, clearly done waiting.

With exaggerated sighs, Rikki and Sakaki give up their spots.

Next up is Kumogi versus Sawada. Kumogi picks an electric lineup: Magneto, Mega Man, and RoboCop. Sawada counters with an all-Marvel squad—Black Panther, Captain America, and The Punisher.

Kumogi smirks. "All Marvel roster, huh?"

Sawada nods confidently. "Yeah! They’re my new favorites. Get ready to eat dust, Kumogi!"

Kumogi laughs. "Just ‘cause you're a ZAGE employee and got to play this early doesn’t mean you’re winning today, dumbass."

With the banter out of the way, the match begins!

Scenes like this are playing out in arcades all over Japan. Players are amazed by the game's new features—three-character teams, assist mechanics, synchronized super moves. No other fighter has offered this kind of speed and strategy. Even newcomers are able to grasp the basics quickly, while veterans dig into the deeper systems.

The game also boasts enhanced visuals—more vivid, fluid, and dynamic than ever before. The distinct art style, handpicked by Zaboru, draws inspiration from Marvel vs Capcom in his previous life, featuring bold outlines, expressive animations, and cinematic flair. It’s a design choice that resonates deeply with players, who absolutely love the stylish presentation and vibrant energy it brings to every match.

Beyond gameplay, there’s a growing curiosity about the Marvel roster. Japanese fans are familiar with ZAGE icons like Mario , Robo-cop,  Z-Red and Samus, but heroes like Iron Man , The Punisher and Wolverine are still mysterious. “Who are these guys? What’s their backstory?” becomes a common question. Players grow curious and begin searching for Marvel comic book shops in Japan—but quickly discover that U.S. comics are quite rare and hard to find. Adding to the challenge, Marvel’s overall sales haven’t been strong recently, making their presence even more limited in the Japanese market.

The MARVE VS ZAGE Release has become a small phenomenon Even TV Tokyo runs a segment on the release. A reporter stands outside a jam-packed arcade in Shibuya. “As you can see, the arcades are overflowing. Let’s hear from the fans.”

He approaches a high schooler clutching a bottle of water and the reporter asks. “What brought you here today?”

The boy lights up. “Marvel vs ZAGE, of course! It’s like a dream matchup. And the Marvel characters are cool! I wanna learn more about them!”

The reporter smiles and leans in. “Do you think Marvel vs ZAGE is a good game?”

The boy beams. “Of course! ZAGE games never fail—they always bring something fresh. This one’s on a whole new level!”

Back at ZAGE HQ, Zaboru watches the broadcast from his office, a satisfied smile on his face. He had anticipated this curiosity. Months ago, in coordination with Marvel’s U.S. team, he greenlit a special shipment of translated Marvel comics. Starting next month in August, Japanese bookstores and select retailers will begin carrying them.

“Hehe, let them crave all that Marvel content,” Zaboru said with a grin. “Once the timing is right, ZAGE will release a brand-new Marvel comic—one that reboots the universe from scratch.”

He leaned back in his chair, satisfied. Zaboru wasn’t just interested in sales; he wanted to restore Marvel’s legacy. But he knew better than to rush it. To succeed, the plan had to be meticulous, deliberate, and flawless. No shortcuts. No fumbles.
