Coco's Homebrew One Year Anniversary

A Small Thanks

On this day last year (18/01/2019) I started my patreon, and released my homebrew content publicly for the first time ever . Since then, I've received immensely generous support from my friends and from strangers alike. Making content for you guys has kept me busy and brought me joy amidst a really difficult year. Thank you all so, so much.

Your Favourite Homebrews of the Year

Last month I put out a poll asking what your favourite homebrews of mine were from my first year. I mainly did this to get an idea of what you guys want me to make more of. I was planning on only writing about one or two of them, but the poll ended up having a four way tie for first place, so I guess I'll write about all four of those! So, in no particular order, here's my top 4 homebrew creations from the past year as voted for by all of you:

#4: The Thoraxia Race

The thoraxia are a race of bug-like humanoids who I decided to make after getting sucked into one of my favourite games of the decade, Hollow Knight. The game's creativity inspired me, and, after realising that 5th edition doesn't have any bug races already, I came up with the thoraxia. What a crap name.

Since there are so many bugs in our world, I felt that making the thoraxia a conventional race (even with subraces) would be too limiting. Instead, I opted to make the race fully customisable. If you play a thoraxia, you'll get darkvision and a choice of two traits from a pool of six. These traits don't completely cover the whole spectrum of potential buggy parts or insectoid abilities, but I think it's comprehensive enough to let you make your character into almost any bug. Who knows, I might go back one day and add a few more ;)

#3: Luck Domain Cleric Subclass

My favourite homebrew I've made so far! I love this subclass, so I'm really glad you guys voted for it. I love it because think I managed to make every feature fit into the theme I was aiming for without making any of them boring or unbalanced. In my opinion, it's as close to perfect as any of my subclasses have ever come, and it's fun as hell to play too.

Essentially, the luck domain cleric is all about dice manipulation. D&D is a game where you put your fate in dice rolls, but this subclass aims to make your dice rolls more favourable as if a god of luck is looking down on you and helping you out on your adventures. The only big problem I have with this subclass is the existence of other dice manipulating feats and subclasses which, if stacked on top of this subclass, make the player way too powerful. I even put a disclaimer in at the beginning of the subclass begging people not to abuse this. If I had to DM a character that was a multiclass luck cleric/divination wizard who also had the lucky feat, I would probably cry. Please don't do that.

#2: Seasonal Soul Sorcerous Origin

Originally designed as a fey-themed sorcerer subclass for a friend, this subclass was without a doubt the most time consuming homebrew I've done yet. But in the end, the time I spent designing seasonal soul was worth it, because it's definitely one of the best subclasses I've made to date (maybe even the best but good luck trying to get me to dethrone luck domain as my favourite).

This origin gives you access to different spells, powers and ways to spend your sorcery points depending on the season you choose, and the features for each are based off of what the fey associate them with. Spring is the time for seducing all of your DM's NPCs, summer is the time when you go full murderhobo and run headfirst into all of your DM's traps, autumn is the time when you're actually nice to your party members for once, and winter is the time where you just act like a massive downer to be honest. You also get access to the druid spell list.

#1: The Forgotten Race

The forgotten are definitely one of my more unique (and weird) ideas, but I think I managed to get across the idea I was going for pretty well. They're very different to any other race I've designed, and I'm not too sure where I stand on them.

The forgotten are a race of people native to the shadowfell whose abilities relate to being, funnily enough, forgotten. Due to their connection with memory, they can erase the memories of others and rarely forget anything, while their connection with death means they are seemingly immortal, cursed with infinite lifespans to reflect the really depressing idea that, once there is noone alive who remembers us, we are doomed to be forgotten forever. It's pretty heavy stuff. Even just writing this is making me want a stiff drink and a cold shower. They're definitely not a combat-focused race, but clever players will find their racial traits to be invaluable if used properly.

What's Coming in 2020

I started off the new year with what has become one of my favourite subclasses, the mad artist rogue archetype. I released it too late to be on the poll this year, so hopefully it will make it onto your guys' top picks next year (if I do this again). I'm currently busy with my final year of university so don't expect much content in the first stretch of 2020, but after that I should hopefully have time to get back on the saddle and whip up some more content. Hopefully I'll also be able to collaborate with some more homebrewers too!

Looking back at my first posts, I can see that my homebrews have improved a lot over the past year, and I'm excited for the future. I hope that, by 2021, my content will have continued to improve even more, and that you guys will still deem me worthy of your incredibly generous support.

Thank you.
