All You Need to Know about Wim Winters and the Whole Beat Revolution in Classical Music | 🔱 Culture Wars

Hello everyone!

As you might know, our interview with Wim Winters will be publicly released today, so I thought I would share this 10 minute video with you that I made about Whole beat and Winters, to give you a brief introduction.

In my research for this video, I was quite shocked by how rude and disdainful his critics were towards Wim Winters as a person in their critical remarks about whole beat. It goes to show that people see his project as a big threat and considering that whole beat could radically change the modern idea of a virtuoso on the piano and the violin, their reaction is understandable.

It is time to make music from the classical canon less of a sport and more about poetry!

1st of February we will release the final video on this topic:

Stay tuned for another great conversation!

Best wishes from the producer,

I have to say, what Winters says makes sense. Especially the point on how Single Beat performances are simply not possible, as it exceeds the capability of the performers. By the way: this is one of the "easiest" interviews I have, due to Winters´ wealth of knowledge. - Jan-Ove Tuv.

Thank you! I will have a look. I am familiar with this man. He is more serious in his criticism than most others. To be honest, I am not an expert and cannot certify either single beat or whole beat, but I have always had a problem with recordings of classical music being performed too fast — like many others. I do not for a second doubt that this is connected to the spirit of the modern times and how performers are seen as sport monkeys more than poetic musicians. Since the marxist revolution in the West, which we are still coping with, the way of measuring quality in classical music has been reduced to how fast it can be performed. That is the only way the masses can understand quality. So when I was introduced to Wim Winters and his whole beat project, I was glad to see that someone finally explained why the music is being played so awfully fast and at last offered a solution that could make sense. I don't know about you, but Maximianno Cobra's version of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony makes a lot more sense than John Eliot Gardiner's rock'n'roll interpretation. And even Gardiner does not reach single beat in his attempt! So imagine how absurd it would sound if the symphony was actually performed in the true tempo. I think you will appreciate listening to the next conversation we are releasing on this subject, where my brother and Wim Winters go in-depth and look at all the major counter-arguments against the whole beat practice. - Bork Nerdrum

https://youtu.be/he79n5q0dOw Check out this very polite, unbiased, and exhaustive examination of historical metronome markings and the whole beat theory. Conclusion: while it is possible that whole beat metronome markings were sometimes used in the past, it was rare and an exception to the usual practice. The inventor of the metronome emphasised in several published articles that each click of the metronome should be taken as one beat, and that counting one back and forth movement of the metronome, i.e. two clicks, as one beat is incorrect.

Excellent snippet! Thank you. The Whole Beat recording of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is profoundly moving. It has often struck me how "triggered" people become when Mr Winter's research is presented to them, and sadly many then resort to personal insults. Surely this is actually a good sign, albeit deeply unpleasant for the recipients, because whilst the truth usually makes people feel scared and thus uncomfortable, it is challenging them to think critically. There's some clear examples of "projection" in those criticisms too, which is amusing. The best recourse is to listen to and read ALL of Mr Winter's research and then just "sit" with it for a few months, let the concept sink in. The consequences can be profound and yes, "liberating".
