15 years ago, i decided to embark on a project where i took one self portrait a day for a year. i called it 365 days (original). this ritual was my refuge of quietude and stillness within a very emotional and seemingly turbulent inner world. i didn’t have words for it at the time; attention is a form of devotion, and that’s what i was giving myself — undivided attention. i don’t have the images anymore, or any photos from those teenage years (only about 40 of them which remain on an archaic flickr page) … i don’t feel that sad about it. i’ve never really taken photos to hold onto them. it is more just something that happens, as it must. it is as natural as breathing. to pay attention. no distractions. be with what is here. “attention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as a prayer. it presupposes faith and love.” when i see you through the lens, i am always filled with awe by the beauty. i try not to be too dramatic about it. but if you try looking at someone for a while, you’ll realize too. our beauty is immortal. “if one looks long enough at almost anything, looks with absolute attention at a flower, a stone, the bark of a tree, grass, snow, a cloud, something like revelation takes place…”
