2023-09-25 16:20:48 +0000 UTC4:25 I think Ushijima "you should have come to Shiratorizawa" Wakatoshi would be happy with your choice of Oikawa.

2023-09-25 08:52:53 +0000 UTCOh! And for the music, I actually think you're on to something real there in the Haikyuu soundtrack being less salient for two reasons: one technical, and one really simple. 1) The more "technical" reason is just that the Haikyuu music is more focused on harmony and rhythm than on big solo melodies. In MHA, we can sing the main melody, but for Haikyuu, even the top notes are repeated and mostly just used for atmosphere. Some people call Haikyuu's style "mood music" or "Glassian" (after Philip Glass). For example, the Haikyuu soundtrack "Chou Sokkou" (Freak Quick) is a great song, but it's meant to be in the background highlighting the action. It's not meant to be the center of attention. There isn't even any "melody" at all until about 50 seconds into it, and then it's almost more of a riff on top of the harmony and rhythm that's actually what makes the track recognizable. (https://youtu.be/SNXw0OfC6eU?si=rqFkBQWR1Ei5OZA3) 2) There are just a LOT more tracks. Season 4 of Haikyuu alone has over 50 original tracks. Obviously, some music was recycled from previous seasons, but there were 52 completely new pieces of music. That's just more than 2 per episode! Just doing the math, you're hearing each track much less than you would in MHA or Hunter x Hunter where it repeats; a sizeable chunk of Haikyuu tracks are played only once or twice in total. Compare that to how many times 'You Say Run' has been used, and yeah, that'd make it a lot less prevalent.

2023-09-25 05:53:07 +0000 UTCThanks for answering! I played volleyball in high school only because my school curriculum required that I participate in a sport at some point in my four years there, and many of my female friends were on the girls volleyball team. I was by no means a great player, but I managed to stay in regular rotation because of my height. Years later, I've come back to volleyball in a rec league and I've been having a blast!

2023-09-24 23:29:26 +0000 UTCAlways a pleasure and really crazy seeing how Alex can just rattle off soliloquys on self-actualization as if he were reciting the alphabet. And I actually completely agree with the Hinata description. I have one friend who lives in France who is similar, but otherwise I can't imagine anyone else reacting to Hinata showing up at training camp with basically, "ahhh yep, I've been there." It's so incredibly beyond anything I could imagine myself doing, and while I would almost assuredly respond in horror and embarrassment in real life, that would be mixed with a very large amount of admiration, as well.

2023-09-24 20:40:18 +0000 UTCThanks for the recommendations! Also, your list is great. It’s honestly a shame to leave some of those characters out of my list. Some others that would be honorable mentions are basically all the other Karasuno members, Aone, Kuroo, Tendo (especially), Kiryu, Hoshiumi, Nekomata, Washijo, and Akaashi (Fukurodani in general, I’m a stan of that team).

2023-09-24 18:03:07 +0000 UTC@Chris Having ‘Immovable’ as no.2 is honestly soo based! I remember you mentioning that you had someone that hadn’t been introduced as your no.2. That’s awesome! For me it goes: 1.Hinata 2.Tsukishima 3.Oikawa 4.Atsumu 5.Kageyama 6.Kenma 7.Kita 8.Bokuto 9.Akaashi 10.Kuroo 11.Hoshiumi 12.Sugawara 13.Takeda 14.Washijo 15.Tendo Yes. I did 15 but you technically put down 13 and honestly only putting 15 makes me feel bad for everyone else 😄 When it comes to my recommendation I would say that if you enjoyed March comes in like a lion I recommend Chihayafuru. It’s Josei, about a card game (but seriously no joke it’s super intense and hype as hell) and has such a incredible voice cast and it contains no doubt one of the best characters in anime/manga. And one of the best episodes in anime. No exaggeration. If you want something like Haikyuu than Ace of the Diamond. Slow burn (and I mean a realistic, proper slow burn) but honestly it’s well worth your investment. It ended up being in my top 10 anime/manga. Baseball, underdog protagonist goes to elite, competitive high school. Imagine Hinata going to Shiratorizawa basically. Seriously has the highest of highs and the angsty lowest of lows. It does not shy away from how rough it can be to be a young athlete. Also some other ones for me are Ping Pong (really great and quick), Tsurune (Kyoani doing their gorgeous animation thing as usual), Aoashi (my favourite football manga and has a great anime so far), and I’ll throw in Sk8 the Infinity (anime original series and it’s just really great fun). But do start with RWTW! Could add more but these are my personal favourites. Personally for me while I can enjoy elements of the more over the top side of sports anime, like Kuroko or Blue Lock etc, they really are not my thing ultimately.

2023-09-24 17:55:20 +0000 UTC@Sacha Honestly, by the end of the manga, it is probably something like this: 1. Hinata 2. “The Immovable” (not saying the name cuz spoilers) 3. Oikawa 4. Bokuto 5. Asahi 6. Kageyama 7. Kenma 8. Tsukishima 9. Nishinoya 10. Atsumu/Kita/Ushiwaka Is your’s similar? Also, other than Run with the Wind, can you give me some recommendations for sports anime? I am pretty interested in the genre and would like to hear your thoughts.
Chris Sharpe
2023-09-24 16:55:34 +0000 UTC@Chris I’ve got a good variety but a lot do come from sports anime. It’s always been my favourite sub genre of stories (live action, books etc too) and anime/manga just really nails it. Curious what your haikyuu list looks like. Tbh even if I look at someone’s haikyuu list and it looks vastly different to mine I still think “I respect that”. 😄That’s just how strong the cast is.

2023-09-24 16:46:36 +0000 UTCSame director that did s1 to 3 I believe and honestly I’m just in a puddle of tears right now 😭😭😭 my boyyyyyss Hinata and Kenma I don’t know how I’m going to cope

2023-09-24 15:51:56 +0000 UTCSuper excited. Though I presume it'll be a couple of months before it's released outside of Japan? Can't wait!! And I'm glad they're seemingly only adapting the Karasuno vs Nekoma match this movie so hopefully it doesn't cut out any moments from the manga for atleast this arc. Watching the trailer is already making me emotional!!

2023-09-24 13:19:23 +0000 UTC@Sacha Yeah, half of the characters on my list ended up being Haikyuu and One piece characters. There were some HxH characters as well.

2023-09-24 13:19:14 +0000 UTCi feel like sports anime in general have well written characters, in my opinion that's some of their greatest strengths. Whether it be grounded shows like Haikyuu or over the top ones like Kuruko no basket and bluelock to some degree, it's almost always the characters that keep me watching these shows. and i also love how they can make me understand and appreciate the sport even if i had no interest prior to watching the show. i feel like sports anime are underrated by a lot of people and are not even given a chance by some because of some very stupid reasons.

2023-09-24 11:56:14 +0000 UTCThanks for this! Currently moving house and through the packing and unpacking I’ve been using your videos as a podcast to keep me sane so thanks again! A long haikyuu q&a is going to be a livesaver!

2023-09-24 10:35:45 +0000 UTCI love making lists! Top 20 protagonist, antagonist, individual series characters etc and when I thought up my overall favourite characters it did not surprise me in the slightest that soo many of them were indeed haikyuu characters. I guess it really is my no.1 😄

2023-09-24 10:35:04 +0000 UTCStill can't get over the fact that Suga and Hinata were front and center when there are so many other iconic and popular pairings lol The first one I stumbled upon on learning of this disturbing world was Tsukki and Kuro. Rewatching Haikyuu was never the same again.

Chris Sharpe
2023-09-24 02:38:19 +0000 UTCIt blows my mind the strength and variety of the cast of Haikyuu. In my spare time one day, I decided to think of my top 25 characters in all of anime/manga (ADHD am I right?) and almost a quarter of those spots where taken by Haikyuu characters. This strength and variety only gets better.

2023-09-24 02:05:45 +0000 UTCThe book is Outliers. By Malcolm Gladwell. The Canadian. 😆 😂 (I've only seen the first few minutes so far. Just had to get that in, but now I'm kinda convinced Alex is going to call it Freakonomics forever just for the comment algorithm, haha)
