Day 10 of Goodwin admiring at two men doing physical work in a respectful and totally-heterosexual manner.

Planetes at least got quite a bit critical acclaim. And enough popularity to have an anime adaption. But I do agree with him that he definitely developed his themes much better in Vinland. Still both works are awesome in their own ways.

I know it was an offhand comment, but I for one would be fascinated to hear some of your thoughts about many of the philosophies and ideas laid out in the Bible. You have such a unique and interesting outlook on existence and what it is "to be", I'd gladly pay to listen to that. Though I'm probably in the VAST minority of people who'd be interested in that lol. On a similar note I've been mulling over reading some other religious texts like the Baghavad Gita, the Mahayana Sutra, the Quran etc. (I've already done the Bible). I think there's a lot of valuable insight to be gained from these old religious / philosophical texts - the core ideas behind schools of religious thought are so fascinating to me.

Yeah I watched an interview of his where he said the themes of Planetes and Vinland Saga are the same but what he wanted to convey didn't really reach the audience as he had hoped, so he moved onto Vinland in the hopes of refining it. It's unfortunate Planetes didn't gain a lot of popularity but I'm all the more excited to watch it now to see how it all started and experience the same heart in a different setting.

Hey totally random what's your cat's name?! I keep seeing him pop in videos and I'm so curious, especially after the Q&A hehe

Highly recommend Planetes! He started to write Planetes back in 1999 and then went on to do Vinland in 2005. It’s fascinating to watch how he started to find the themes he wanted to talk about before moving on to his longer historic story. Also the anime is a good adaptation too!

Thorfinn and Canute are such great foils in this story. One hated his father and the other loved his. Both changed forever by Askeladd. One became a slave and the other became a slave to a crown. Both have the same end goal but want to achieve it by different individual means. Again the anime never makes it super clear so the timeline wise we are now officially caught up with each other. Both Thorfinn and Canute are now in Sept/Oct 1018, so it has been 4 years since the events of the end of the prologue, and both are now 22 years old. You know what’s funny when that Ecclesiastes quote was at the beginning of the chapter in the manga and then it followed with Canute’s perspective I was instantly like “ohhh dear”. Ecclesiastes is notorious for being cynical and nihilistic sooo yeah definitely suits our boy Canute here. The difference between these two in this episode is honestly astonishing. Thorfinn being the biggest ray of sunshine and Canute thinking he is in a Shakespeare play. If your only friend is the dismembered head of your dead father than I think you need new friends my boy! Truly an iconic pair our boys are now indeed. Who would have thought in season 1! 😄

Love how Yukimura sensei has created characters so real and alive that their actions seem not like something he made happen but rather something he allows to happen. The characters are forging their own paths and he is just there spinning it into words and drawings. Really in awe of his craft!! Been meaning to watch his other work, Planetes, and finally have the time to get to it so it'll be really interesting to dive into another completely different world!

Yukimura Twitter thread for 2x10 “Canute! Did you poison such a kind brother!? Thank you for watching Vinland Saga Episode 10 ‘The Cursed Head’! It’s a demon. It’s a demon’s road. I wonder if a king needs that kind of merciless sternness even for his relatives. Well, I wouldn’t like it if someone who only favoured his relatives was the king. King Harald is a good man. He would have a made a good king. People call leaders Machiavellian, who go out of their way for a cause, and Canute has become just that kind of person. As for the means … you have to choose. Most of the people who start wars are I guess Machiavellian. The means are a process. The process is everyday. If people’s daily lives are ruled by fear, it cannot be said to be a good government. Well, if you said “You’re the author, don’t say that,” you’d be right, and that’s how I drew Canute. Canute is amazing. He even got the widow wife of the former king of England that he destroyed. Probably for the purpose of authorising his royal authority. He believes “I have no choice …”
