It's nice to see Thorfinn get more and more expressive with his face episode by episode

2023-07-20 21:59:14 +0000 UTCI definitely would still enjoy a reaction even if you've seen the first few eps. The show is that good

2023-07-08 00:06:52 +0000 UTCThese threads of his are super awesome. One because not many creators are active with their audience and two because while some of them may be him just reacting to what he’s seeing, there are times were he really lets us in on how he’s feeling about the world/life etc.

2023-07-07 19:29:16 +0000 UTCYeah not everyone is made in that way. I’ve been in some pretty awful scenarios and I have managed to keep to my moral base and act accordingly. But I also know that I may freeze one day, I may not speak out another time, or I may stoop to a low that I’m not proud of… It takes ALOT to know yourself and actually act what you preach.

2023-07-07 19:22:15 +0000 UTCWhoops, called it an island in episode 8 too. I guess it just feels so isolated from the rest of what we've seen

2023-07-07 18:29:53 +0000 UTCI'm torn about this. On the one hand I would like to, on the other hand I've seen the first few episodes (the prologue) already

2023-07-07 18:29:32 +0000 UTCMaybe we're beating them out of the forest?

2023-07-07 18:29:12 +0000 UTCWish I had seen this yesterday. Ketil's struggle is really well depicted and I imagine very common. It's not easy to have true conviction for the conviction itself (as opposed to fear of something) or to risk your well-being for it

2023-07-07 18:28:26 +0000 UTCFigured as much. It was pretty intimate nontheless

2023-07-07 18:23:12 +0000 UTCReally interesting one this time. I think my favorite part: "Humans are amazing, they’re making progress. “The best way to survive is to kill others and steal their property.” “If you think it’s going to be a trouble on your neighbourhood, why not kill and loot the people in the neighbouring town?” But I don’t. Not in modern times. Do not cut off the ears of person you kill and collect them to make a necklace. Humans are not wild animals." This is interesting to think about, because at first glance it's correct. We do have a survival mechanism that makes this very possible and advantageous. What's cool though, is that there are multiple competitions happening at the same time: the immediate, and the long term. And from the million years of evolution behind humanity, we were gifted with instincts that take both into account.

2023-07-07 16:06:00 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure Arn-haid is the correct English pronunciation if we base if off of Norse. You would only pronounce it "Arn-hide" if you were basing it off of German pronunciation, which wouldn't make sense considering she's from Sweden and this is a Nordic story

2023-07-07 14:33:09 +0000 UTCIs it really modern day Germany? That’s pretty cool. All I know is that they are supposedly some where in the south of Denmark.

2023-07-07 00:55:11 +0000 UTCSuch as? Regardless, anything that we haven’t even seen on screen we can’t possibly use to judge the relationship between them. Only thing we have to go on so far is a couple friendly morning chats and the assumption that there have been more like them going on.

2023-07-06 23:07:44 +0000 UTCthere has been a time jump here already, there has been way more than a couple of friendly mornings.

2023-07-06 19:25:26 +0000 UTCFirst “the thing” is an old Nordic word for assembly of clans and tribes to make political decisions basically. Hopefully someone reminded you about the short 6.5 episode (it’s like not even 3 mins long) that’s on Mappa’s YouTube channel which is actually better to watch before episode 8. Not end of the world if you have already recorded 2x8 and didn’t do it but just thought I’d put a reminder. Oh boyyy I have soo many opinions on this episode. You’ve pretty much nailed it that while Ketil is afraid of violence, his real problem is that he has no backbone to live up to his ‘morals’. He heavily relies on the people surrounding him and while you can say that Ketil is right that men like him can’t survive and be ‘the big man’ while running this land at the time… it’s clear that he has people like Pater and Snake who aren’t awful people. Who legitimately try to help him and find the best solutions that they have for the culture they live in. It’s tough and like you say we can respect someone like Thorfinn because we know what he was capable of. But then we have Ketil who displays himself as a ‘good slave master’ but is trapping a young woman for sex (They are both presented as naked in the manga) and comfort and won’t let HER leave… oh man it’s just a great mess. But that’s the power of Yukimura’s writing that in one episode/chapter he can show one man’s struggle in this vicious world they live in and it’s unbelievably grey.

2023-07-06 17:49:05 +0000 UTCIn the manga Arnheid is nude in the bed with Ketil, which makes it much more obvious why he chose her to be his "personal attendant" (ick).

2023-07-06 17:19:25 +0000 UTCThis episode has so much setup for this season, can’t wait till my girl arnheid gets her shine. She’s the best character after Thorfinn and Canute this season for sure. Also it’s much more overt in the manga since it isn’t censored, but since arnheid is ketils slave, he’s using her for sex. That’s why she has that deadpan look on her face at the end of the ep.

2023-07-06 17:04:26 +0000 UTCArnheid (Arn-hide)* calling her “Einar’s girl” after a couple friendly morning chats is a bit preemptive lol

2023-07-06 17:03:30 +0000 UTCYukimura Twitter thread for 2x7: “Thank you for watching Vinland Saga episode 7 ‘Ironfist Ketil’ I’m scared of Thorgil. Violence scares me too. Feeling really honest. For example, what should we do if the state forces us to use violence? In reality, there is such a situation on earth. That’s horrible. I read in a book that worldwide violence is on the decline. I do not think so …? In that book, you tried to prove the theory with various numbers? Violence is shameful these days. Those who use violence are childish. So violence tends to be used covertly in modern times. It’s also terrifying. The great thing about chivalry is that a gentlemen is considered ‘cool’. At some point, people who can control violence are considered cool. Even the Viking weren’t so unrestrained, but it seems in this era, a violent man like Thorgil was respected at first sight. Humans are amazing, they’re making progress. Humans are not wild animals. In other words, it means “it’s not enough to just survive.” I think this the core of human nature. We all don’t want to die. I don’t want to hurt anyone. That’s why it’s precious and moving to take on your own disadvantages and benefit others. We all know that. I know, but it’s hard to do. I want courage. A long time ago, I was moved by ‘Tokkyuu’ by Kubo Mitsurou. It’s a manga about sea rescuers, they jump into dangerous waters to save lives. Beyond the cost of putting their lives at risk, what they got out of their jobs is “feeling good.” “It feels good to help others.” Very cool. The reward for various disadvantages is “feeling good.” But if you feel like it. If you’re in the mood. I feel like I can do my best if I can live comfortably after overcoming the wall of disadvantage.”
