2023-09-18 21:34:17 +0000 UTCHaving Yanagihara win this game is one of the most interesting choices I've ever seen narratively, especially considering how much we've come to love and invest ourselves in Shimada's journey. Media in general (especially anime) pretty scarcely represents older people (unless they're in shounen, and even there they're generally pretty badass and their age doesn't really have an affect on them at all), so I honestly adore this arc for its exploration of how age and 'running out of time' can affect people in a professional setting. I NEVER thought I'd find myself rooting against Shimada when I first watched this arc, but there's something about Yanagihara's passion and background that makes you feel like you're watching a historic legend finishing their career in real time.
