Looks like the commision raised him up, but that also meant they had him on a leash. I always come back to that moment when he was "asked" to infiltrate the LoV, and him clearly being unhappy, but unable to say no. Be that because it's a very important mission and he's the best man for the job, or because he is beholden to them. I don't think the personality he displayed before was necessarily a lie, but it does seem like he was forced to betray his principles/raised with a certain mindset and on more shaky ground then we knew. I'm glad he can follow his heart now. Ah, the caged bird symbolism...

ahhh i missed these reactions

Endeavor’s development is so amazing, the show wouldn’t be the same without the struggle of the Todoroki family, it’s like removing the fire nation royal family from ATLA, funnily enough.

Chris Sharpe

Excellent reaction. I got teary too. What a phenomenal episode, the writing and acting were off the charts. Big shoutouts to the team that translated to screen and paced this season. Easily one of the best eps of the series.

Same

Still need to watch this episode fuck, the break week through me off with MHA.

9:38 Goodwin was talking about the bands of people going around looting as their own special kind of evil. They're actually based on a historical group of people in Japan called the "Hatamoto-yakko" (旗本奴, or "flag-bearing-bandits"). Basically, in the early to mid-1800s, the economy in most of the country and especially Western Japan was not doing so well, and the samurai (who were technically "highest ranking" according to the class system) were often driven into destitute poverty because their lords couldn't afford to support them. Some of them would dress up in the bright colors of the clan flags ('hata') to show off their authority, hence the flamboyant, color-coordinated character designs here. They're essentially the precursor to modern gangs. They would roam around looting and taking from ordinary citizens because they thought they were entitled to it, or you could be more sympathetic and say it was because they were desperate and not given other choices, since it wasn't easily possible to leave the samurai class and join a merchant guild, either. Some citizens banded together and formed local militias to try to fend off the raving bandits. Those citizen groups were called "Machi-yakko" (町奴, "town-bandits"), and ironically, they were the ones acting outside the law, since there were very few legal actions that could be taken against the samurai. The samurai were supposed to be held in check by their honor code, and were given almost free rein under the law, but when the honor code failed them, they took that out on the system and on bystanders who they saw as propping up that system. Public sentiment was largely in support of the "machi-yakko" vigilantes defending their towns, but it wasn't so black-and-white, and they were very much acting outside the law.

It's interesting to see how this episode further highlights some of the socio-economic aspects of this world. All Might is indeed everyone's hero but mostly really for middle class kids like Deku or Bakugo. For Hawks All Might seemed too distant and removed from his day to day life, too expensive. I've also seen comments about how Endeavour seems to be the epitome of “you heroes hurt your own families just to help complete strangers” as Shigaraki said. The parallels between Dabi and Hawks are so interesting how they've been influenced by Endeavour.

Thanks for that analysis. If I recall correctly I was surprised when that melody kicked in at what felt like an odd moment. I didn't consider the fact that it was altered and was that supplementary to the themes of the episode

Alex G

Please be patient with me, haha. I'm also a huge music nerd, and Hayashi Yuuki (the soundtrack composer for MHA, Haikyuu, and others) has a real talent for supplementing the story with musical storytelling. The fancy term for it is "motivic development" or "leitmotifs," but it's something completely untrained people can hear and (more importantly) feel, too. Start listening to the sound track at around 19:37. The image on screen and the narration says that people had started questioning what it means to be a hero. The soundtrack has the exact same melody as the Season 1 soundtrack called "You Can Become a Hero," but it's in a different rhythm and time signature, it's minor instead of major, there's different instrumentation, and so on. In other words, it's radically transformed, and the music itself is "questioning what it means to be a hero." I absolutely love this stuff and hope people appreciate how insanely HARD it is to pull off without sounding cheesy and forced. Hayashi Yuuki (with very little formal training!) pulls it off many times in many series. He is a very special talent. For direct comparison, the melody really kicks in at 20:10 in Goodwin's video, and the S1 original, timestamped for the melody is here: https://youtu.be/n608d8oQiSM?t=87

He truly is among the best, he can do loud epic moments, and he can do quieter emotional moments, Chris Sabat’s in a similar way.

Awh, his “SHOTOOO” shouting is one of my favorite things about his dub performance lol. We haven’t heard one in a long time and the levity it brought to that otherwise really heavy scene was much appreciated, personally speaking lol

Jake White

In hindsight his "TODOROKI!!" is weird but moving

Alex G

Hopefully the same but just a few days late

Alex G

I really cannot wait for 6x17..

i_am_jam

Man Patrick Seitz(Endeavor) will always be one of my favorite dub VA’s, but even considering that, that “My heart….is breaking” line read he gives still gets me to tear up every time. The short sharp breaths between words, the tremble in his inflection, etc. he’s just fantastic.

Jake White

Yeah and just when you think Endeavor has finished his growth arc... He hits bottom again

Alex G

It wasn't shown in the series, but during the mass decay by Shiggy, Wash was able to float dozens of hospital beds above the ground with his bubbles. Not only is he able to disinfect wounds, he's also a very powerful rescue hero, which you see glimpses of with Koda and Manga during the rescue since they trained with him.

Muchymozzarella

Genuinely was far more excruciating to watch than I was expecting tbh, even being a manga reader. They absolutely crushed the emotional weight of this little mini arc

Jake White

any idea what the schedule is looking like this week? :)

Mima

More about this comes in a few episodes, but Hawks being more alive than ever is definitely addressed. Also now we know why Hawks is on the Todoroki family wall in the Shout Baby ending (the one with the photos), he's basically part of the family ;P

Muchymozzarella

Man even though I'm a big action guy these slower episodes that more so drive the plot are so good. Endeavor is one of the best written characters in this show. Can't believe the amount of growth he's gone through. These arcs are really showing the downfall of hero society as we know it. Society as a whole needs to step up and become that symbol of peace that has been shattered.

Skyler Anderson

Episode: named after the Todorokis Also the Episode: 80% about Hawks Listen we knew that Endeavor-themed Hawks wedding ring merch meant something

Muchymozzarella

Great episode and reaction but man next episode is gonna be rough, it gets pretty depressing. But I also can’t wait for you to see it!

CEEmma

Get ready for a lot of pain next episode…
