I thought his speech was appropriate. It had Asahi's best interests at heart and was aimed solely at giving him a push to do what he already wanted to do but was holding himself back from. There was no ego in it or any malice to try to take him down a peg. And I suspect it's what Asahi wanted to hear. I think what makes the kind of mindset Asahi had at that point so destructive is that it's this whole intricate story that feels real to him. It's tough to be objective once that kind of downward spiral takes hold. And so talking to other people he will try to bring people into that spiral with him. I assumed people might object to the speech because of how direct it was and how it didn't sympathize with his fear much, but what Daichi did was give him a little strength outside of his "failure" narrative to grab onto for a second, something more objective. And I think that doesn't mean Daichi didn't sympathize, just that sympathy wasn't the tool for the job at that moment. It was apparent to me that it was said out of love, so his specific word choice matters less than the intent.

Ah that makes sense ๐Ÿ˜‚

there is a massive crossover between fans of this show and fans of my hero academia, so its no suprise you are getting hard my hero vibes from haiykuu. they share a lot of the same positive qualities and naturally due to being two really popular shounen shows coming out at around the same time in all likelihood if youve seen one of them youve seen both

@Ryan oh yeah, I agree. I didn't mean it for you or anything, just made a comment about anxiety in general and how some people may take offense to, and some, not so much, with Daichi's comment. So it can just be interpreted in different ways and there's no right or wrong interpretation.

Damn, Takeda Sensei looks half his age.

The Gaang and the Straw Hat Pirates are my favorite protagonist groups, but Kurasuno is slowly getting closer and closer.

I love Nishinoyaโ€™s energy. Itโ€™s in between Hinataโ€™s soft energy and Tanakaโ€™s rough energy becoming just, energy. Because of this, he vibes so well with both. Heโ€™s so passionate and hardworking towards anything he does. People naturally have positive and negative energy that they apply in different areas in their lives, but I love how Nishinoya seems to have just positive energy and never feels the need to push out bitterness like most people do.

Episode 9 of Haikyuu got me in my feels. This episode made me immediately fall in love with the series. More to come :)

:) Yeah, different people might take that differently, and I don't want to pretend like I'm an authority on counseling or anxiety management, haha. I'm certainly not. All I meant is that, in terms of the words he said, the subtitles might make it look like Daichi was listing out accusations, but he wasn't. He's listing out hypothetical things that Asahi might be thinking or saying to himself.

Ryan

This is just my interpretation of what Daichi wanted to get across to Asahi (with the anxiety comment) - "Don't let your anxiety of wanting to win, cloud your love and passion for volleyball" Or "Just continue playing if you love the game enough, instead of focusing your anxiety on winning and not letting down your teammates" Obviously topics around anxiety have to be handled with some amount of sensitivity, but I do think Daichi's straightforward harshness was a knowing push and also reassurance for Asahi. Also agree with you that I personally didn't think it was harsh, but his dialogue did strike a chord with some people in the fandom, so it's a curious case of individual perspectives and experiences I guess.

I think a fractured rib would be a bit extreme in a Japanese context, haha. I used to do the student-teacher sports day activities, too, and they were serious in a sense, but never aggressive. First responsibility was always to each other. Nishinoya's shirt: 8:00 ๅคงๅ™จๆ™ฉๆˆ (taiki bansei -- "great things/weapons take time to develop/come into their own") I can never tell if Goodwin's being serious or deadpan with the "sausages." They were protein bars, but I suppose, same-same? Daichi's speech was a bit interesting. I don't think Daichi was being that harsh, really. He was saying, "if you're thinking things like, 'I skipped a whole month,' or 'I let people down,' ... then don't think that. That's not how we think of it." Grateful for the video and thoughts. :) I suppose it's a little late now, but hoping you saw the link to the clip that goes at the end of Episode 10. Here again: https://youtu.be/lL4_lXaRWpQ

I knew you'd have such good introspective feedback concerning the topics in this anime. Literaly why I wanted you to watch it so badly, so glad your reacting to it. I think what's great about this anime is the attention to detail when it comes to character building and development throughout the series. Even side characters, if you look closely, are given unique varied personalities. You really get the sense thar everyone has their own life going on behind the scenes. Such good character writing. ๐ŸคŒ Also Takeda Sensei calls Ukai "kun" because Ukai(26) is younger than Takeda(29) ๐Ÿ˜….

One of my favorite episodes, the buildup, the payoff, so much packed into one episode
