This was the episode that made me have to stop watching the show for over a year. It hit too hard, was too accurate in its depiction of grief that I ACTUALLY couldn't handle it. I returned to the show last year, and even though I was in a much better place, I STILL couldn't handle more than 2 or 3 episodes a day absolute maximum.

yeah akari and hinata have def been my two fav characters in the show so far. gonna have to just stick with goodwin's reactions for now until i watch more of the show. honestly id like to watch really far ahead of goodwin so i can go back and watch these reactions kinda like a rewatch.

You might appreciate Teeaboo's reactions as well! Often he quickly just goes trough the entire episode afterwards and points out things in the art and direction of it all, and it just gave me a whole nother appreciation for especially this show! Check out his first episode, he has everything on there in its entirety for free, and see if it might be for you. He also loved it as much as you and I from episode one, so that's always really fun to share :D

Genuinly, the Kawamatos are just a bundle of some of my favourite characters ever. Especially Akari and Hinata!! <3

SO glad you are enjoying it as much as you are, Jasmine! It's truly a special one, and it just gets better and better as too!! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on episodes in the future!

yeah im watching for the first time and have only seen 3 episodes, but im already blown away by the attention to detail the creators put into the overall aesthetic and vibe of the show. the OST, and also the silence, along with the shot compisition and color scheme, its perfectly done in order to maximize the narrative and emotional purpose. its all very intentional, easily the best slice of life production value i have seen outside of Kyoto Animation shows

ayooo???? yall just gonna recommend this show to everyone and goodwin on here for mad long and not give us a tissue warning? three episodes in and this show got me ruined. holy shit. the OST, animation, voice acting, this is literally perfect slice of life and its also hitting me like a truck. and somehow this is just the first 3 episodes?!?! why is Hinata the purest cutest thing to ever exist? why is the scenic background art so good? where has this show been my whole life?

Also don’t know if anyone has remarked on this but in the last few seconds of the episode (just after the pretty tame previews for the next episode) are some gorgeous and amazing artwork from different mangakas, artist, animators etc and are well worth looking at. They are often based on the episode that you have just watched. Kentaro Miura (creator of Berserk) appears a few times as him and Chica Umino (creator of March) were really good friends.

Nobuhiko Okamoto does such a beautiful job with Nikaidou. It’s potentially my favourite role of his (even though I love him as Bakugou and Nishinoya). And I’m really happy that you understand him already. Despite his very loud personality he is genuinely a really sweet boy and you can tell that even in episode 2. He just really cares for Rei and wants a beautiful rival/friendship with him. A good rival does make you better after all. And I love how animated Rei gets around him. Nikaidou really pulls him out of his melancholy state. Nikaidou is actually one of the few characters inspired by a real life genuis shogi player. Satoshi Murayama died young in 1998 at 29 years old. However despite his sickness he was incredibly passionate about the game and his work.

“Loneliness doesn’t always mean you’re alone and without people who love you” YES YES YES TO THIS. Sangatsu portrays this masterfully.

Something this show does really well, is portraying loneliness in a more grounded light. Loneliness doesn't always mean you're alone and without people who love you. More often than not, you feel cripplingly lonely in spite of all the loving people around you. It's sometimes something you can't explain or find the reason for, why you feel lonely while being surrounded by others. Feeling lonely also doesn't mean you're constantly sad. You feel all the emotions and spend happy moments with people while grappling with the lingering feelings of loneliness in your heart. March really handles the nuances and complexity of these feelings and emotions so well, and maybe that's why despite being such a heavy anime, it's almost a comfort anime for me because it explores the different shades of each emotion beautifully and just warms my heart. Also, glad you love Nikaidou as much as I do. He steals your heart more and more every time he makes an appearance.

The atmosphere of this episode is so heavy. There's a lingering sadness that pervades it, with that sadness coming from multiple characters and for different reasons. Nikaido with his sickness, the Kawamotos' family situation, and Rei pondering his own losses. It's a delicate, gut-wrenching feeling that weighs on you lightly in a way I think most shows aren't able to achieve. I love how the show is paced, and how the characters are written in such a way to call attention to the emotional nuances of situations which an attentive viewer will also feel, like when Grandpa gets Rei to go with Hina. With just the subtlest use of expression, sound, and coloration, you can feel the emotional atmosphere of the scene shift and become more tense, which you can also feel in these situations in real life. It's refreshing to see even one character also notice Hina's change in demeanor, whereas I feel in most anime it would've gone unnoticed in the name of making it seem "more" sad that Hina's family isn't aware of her. Grandpa noticing her sudden odd behavior feels more realistic, and shows a lot of perceptiveness and care. It's not often I think that we get stories dealing with this kind of leftover grief. It's a different kind of grief from that felt in the immediate aftermath of tragedy; it's a distant sadness that isn't as potent but still sticks with you for a while after loss. You can feel that kind of grief emanating from Rei and the Kawamotos in pieces: where on the surface they appear fine, but the wounds still occasionally show. The show starts with them still in the middle of healing from events we haven't seen, rather than at the end or beginning of that process, and I really love this element. It adds immediate depth and intrigue to characters we haven't had long to know, and also makes them feel very human. Healing isn't a linear or simple process, and just like people in real life, these characters all have things they carry with them despite what their surface personalities convey. As Alex said, sometimes all it takes is a simple reminder of what was lost for it to all come flooding back.

also i cant believe no one here said anything about this show being an Iyashikei anime !! by far the most under appreciated and one of my fav sub genre's in all of media. iyashi means healing in Japanese, so iyashikei anime are shows/manga that "heals" the audience by using a lot of calming music and imagery, slow scenes that have a lot of buildup and transitions leading up to them, and usually include a lot of emotional catharsis. Slice of Life anime is my fav genre of anime, and iyashikei is one of those unqiue subgenre's that almost no reactors ever dive into and for the most part is ignored by the mainstream anime world. cant wait to see you watch 45+ episodes of this style of anime because its so different from anything else youve seen.

just watched episode 1 of this show for the first time, ya'll were not joking. if every episode is in the same vein and style as the first episode, this shit gonna be an all time fav anime for me, 10/10 masterpiece pilot. i love the feeling you get when you start a new show or movie for the first time and you realize at a certain point what you are watching is truly special, this series already got me tearing up in the first damn episode lmfao

For other shows, when I talk about atmosphere, I talk about the feeling I get from it. For March, it feels like it's really all around me. Like I can touch it, analyze it, and even breathe it in if I'm not careful. That's one of the reasons I feel like water is such a good reflection of the show, and part of why it gets used so prominently, it really has a way of submerging you and sucking you into everything it goes trough. The characters, artstyle, and the way the show uses silence really help with that. And you can just feel the intention behind it all. I love this anime sm. It's really like nothing else for me!

The scene with Hina sobbing had me tear up unexpectedly. I think this was the episode that hooked me on the show.

To clarify, Goodwin, the little ritual the Kawamotos (the family) was doing was part of a holiday called Obon. It's a bit like the Korean holiday Chuseok, in that it involves cooking special/favorite foods of departed loved ones and performing little memorials for them. It's not something they do every day, so it's not as obsessive as you might have thought. It's just a heavier occasion for them probably because it's very much clear that the Kawamoto sisters are still very much grieving the death of their mother.

Nooo don’t post a video when I’m in the middle of studying.
