Haikyuu!! 1x4 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

Comments

This series massively increased the popularity of volleyball in Japan. Its a p massive industry now and a lot of officials in the scene credit this show.

Dorian Manewitz

“That’s some deep trauma. Some deep volleyball trauma he has there,” (heh) “The girl. The only girl who will hang out with volleyball crazed guys,” (I identify far too strongly with this) “You’re not listening to your nightmare,” “Shou believes it because he’s so pure hearted and just loves Kageyama,” “Uh oh uh oh war flashbacks,” “Kageyama’s former teammates are losers confirmed,” “He has a point, they are very easily pissed off,” “Wait ‘til they unlock the misdirection spike, or the lob spike,” “And just like that, 30 minutes pass between sets,” “He trusted. He understood the assignment,” “Do it again. Do it 21 more times or however many points you need to win in volleyball,” (Normally, it’s 3 sets of first to 25 takes the set, you need 2 sets to win, but you need to win by two. So 23-25 is a taken set, but 24-25 goes into a deuce game) “That’s a friendship right there,” “There’s a link between affinity and respect,” “One of my proudest accomplishments is introducing my friend to his wife,” (Wait that’s so sweet!! aww)

Lol not really an issue for me... What little I have left is just riding it out until the next bull market, should it ever come. MHA coming in a bit

Alex G

ouuu yah I heard about that, hope everythings fine

M2GZ

I think Goodwin is still grappling with the recent Crypto currency crash... hope you weren't too negatively effected by it Alex.

Welcome back!

Rejoined patreon for this series. One of my all time favourites. Love your insights as always.

Etsch

My fav character is now my pfp >:)

benj

I'd like to say something here, but obviously can't without spoilers. My favorite character's already been introduced, though. Also, I really love Goodwin Patreon in that everyone's patient and supportive, but.... at some point, someone's gotta tell him that no one calls Hinata "Shou." There's literally one person in the whole show who calls Hinata "Shou-chan," haha, but it's Hinata Shouyou.

Ryan

I have joined Haiykuu pfp gif gang

benj

It's really destructive, yeah. And to be fair, the Kita-Ichi players didn't stop playing in general. They just let Kageyama's set go as an airball for one point. Then when he got benched, they kept playing.

Ryan

Oh, that was probably my mistake. This is my first rewatch of Haikyuu. But I do know how humiliating it feels when the playmaker tells you "you suck"

Ruma Risto

lmao it makes me want to play volleyball but i just know id snap an arm trying to block someone because my bones are weak af

No one's talking about Daichi yet, so let me just say that I think Daichi is the true hero of this episode. He steps in only when absolutely needed, like stopping Tanaka from beating up Tsukishima at least twice (7:30, 11:30), but he's watching closely and making sure it doesn't get completely out of hand. I think his role in letting people "have it out" is underappreciated. I agree with Sacha that, for Kageyama's middle school experience, the faculty advisor is ultimately most at fault, but it's tough to know when to let things play out, and when you have to step in. Speaking of which... I'll admit that it's a little funny how much they're talking compared to playing--or talking *while* playing, which is a bit fictionalized, obviously--but the "let it all out" conversations are actually not entirely rare. For some cultural context: school club activities in Japan, especially at the beginning of the year, in fact actually ARE mostly about getting to know each other. They're trying to feel out who their new teammates are, so unless there's a full-time coach running drills and telling people what to do, some of the time is spent negotiating personal relationships. In a few episodes, some characters will have whole monologues while they jump in the air, and obviously that's just for dramatic purposes, but this level of conversation vs actual game time is not super unusual in real life. Two little language notes: 7:55 American subtitlers love to add "for me" in places where it's a) not needed, and b) not in the original, but Hinata says "The real problem is how to get past you." There's no "the real problem **for me**" there. It could equally be Kageyama's problem, or theirs together. 13:00 Kageyama says (To break through the wall in front of the spiker...) "sono tame no settaa da." They had that as "that's the setter's job," but ironically, in this one, I feel like this is where they SHOULD insert him personally, haha. He's not saying that's what setters do in general. He's saying that's the type of setter he personally wants to be. --> "that's why I'm a setter," "that's what I'm here to do" would, for me anyway, be closer.

Ryan

I think Kindaichi (Kageyama's old teammate) actually did get the team to just not go for his set at all on set point. I think that's meant to be quite literal. (Obviously, not the earthquake fissure in the middle of the court, but I do think they sacrificed that one point to make theirs)

Ryan

"This just turns into a one hour match with deep dive psychological cuts" "They made those two points really satisfying" Welcome to Haikyuu!

Yesssss Goodwin, let the Haikyuu flow. I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

benj

“I want to stay on the court for as long as I can.” Is one of my favourite sentiments of the story. It’s soo simple and pure. The fact that it’s not focused on the concept of winning but just in staying in that place *chefs kiss*

Sacha

If there is a true person to blame for what went down with the ‘Kageyama situation’ it was not his other middle school teammates or Kageymama himself … it was the coach. Although honestly there’s not really a true person to blame as it was a combination of a lot of things. But boy do I side eye the coach who seemed to do nothing to help or guide the situation that clearly has been going on a LONG time. His teammates were clearly (for me at least) sending a sign to not just Kageyama but also the coach. It’s them saying “Do something about this already!” Maybe it’s petty but honestly if I got constantly harassed by a teammate and nothing seemed to be happening I would probably do the same during middle school. I feel for both his teammates and for Kageyama. Middle school boys who haven’t been given skills to communicate with each other as a team. Kageyama’s passion is honestly inspiring but just like the quote said in the beginning “the moment even one of them thinks they are unique, all is lost”. He only thought about his skills and demanded his teammates to rise to HIS level. I love how simply Suga talks to him in the episode about this concept and how he needs to meet his teammates and see where THEY are in the moment. It’s a difficult road for Kageyama to climb to fully grow as a setter and athlete. But he’s beginning to understand and it’s soo beautiful to watch. Also Hinata’s “I’m here.” Makes me cry every time now. Once again Furudate is putting soo many of the themes for the whole story in beginning. Have I said how much I love this story?? 😄

Sacha

It wouldn't really be surprising if a middle school boy stopped playing after that kind of rejection... But no, Kageyama loves volleyball too much, quitting was not an option. He pushed through, reflected on his mistakes and is slowly trying to improve. That is already a sign of strength... and we're only at the beginning of his growth.

Swanlady

I don't think Kageyama's former teammates literally "quit playing" or stopped trying during the match. I interpreted the thing as more of a visual metaphor; it really eats the team spirit if one of the players (especially the "star player") acts overly negative and toxic. Kageyama kept blaming others for everything and outright refused to admit his own mistakes. People weren't able to receive his tosses because he was so unyielding, and because he didn't acknowledge the other players' individual attributes. Like Sugawara tried to explain, sometimes you can only succeed in team sports if you manage to meet each other halfway. But this episode kind of already shows Kageyama's genuine love for volleyball and his ability to take feedback which is definitely a good sign.

Ruma Risto

God I love this show. I just signed up for a winter volleyball beginners league because it's so motivating haha.

Sam B

Coming to Kageyama and his middle school teammates- I think the biggest factor for their downfall was lack of proper communication. Kageyama was too focused on winning that he failed to see the bigger picture and was only thinking of himself. His tosses were getting reckless and just affecting the spikers' performances in turn. His teammates in turn lashed out and gave up on him without properly instigating a healthy conversation to air out their problems and resolve the issue. You can't really point fingers at a single person in this case, because they were just middle school boys who didn't know how to navigate this issue in a better way, to no fault of their own. Fights break out in any team sport, what's important is that you have a healthy conversation to resolve the issue and come to a compromise.

Lol Tsukki perpetually has 2 sticks, one up his ass, and another to poke people’s egos. About Kageyama’s teammates, I mean, yeah they want to win, but how many games are they going to have to just ‘put up with’ to get there with him like that. Personally I don’t really blame them too much for it bc they HAVE aired their grievances, he just doesn’t really care. Ergo, the tyrannical king of the court. Also they’re like 14 there, so I think it would be weirder if the weren’t petty lol. It was a major slap in the face and wake up call for Kags that really caused him to rethink a lot of things and let him grow so much in just the 4 eps thus far.

Winnie

I'd say the line "I want to stay on the court for as long as I can" shows Hinata and Kageyama's love for the sport. It's more than just about winning for them, they are genuinely extremely passionate about volleyball, as we can see how much they enjoy it, tirelessly practicing into dusk and constantly thinking about playing. You could take it literally, they want to stay on the court and play volleyball for as long as they can. Also, I'm glad you don't instantly hate Tsukishima (or at least I think you don't)! A lot of people seem to immediately dislike him, which I do understand to a certain extent. As annoying as he can be, he's just sort of that immature teenage boy who likes to rile people up for fun, and just states what he sees in a mildly annoying manner. He doesn't really have any sinister intentions though. And also, thank you for the two consecutive Haikyuu episodes!! Just made my week a lot better
