“He’s terrifying, partly because he’s so nice,” “Why do I get the feeling I’m gonna fall in love with them all? And then want to join a volleyball team?” (because that’s exactly what’s going to happen) “Morning volleyball: more important than all your classes,” “Shou is motivated by spiking like Denji is motivated by boobs,” “No one tell this kid about girls,” “Even the midcards are optimistic and inspiring,” “It never works when you want a nickname. When you’re given one, it’s so much more meaningful and cool,” (AGREED. My friends call me ‘Neva’ all the time and I love it so much because they started on their own) “I have a feeling these newcomers are going to be terrifying,” (They’re both such great characters) “Don’t you kids have homework?” (ABOUT that…) “Their only hope for higher education is a volleyball scholarship,” “Is this sweat or tears or both?” (Yes) “I want a rival. I need a rival. Something. Time to find a volleyball rival of my own,” “His hair is a little bit too detailed to be a one-time character,” (Counting the days ‘til Goodwin’s ‘Simp for the Blond Man’ gene kicks in for Tsukki)

This first half of Season 1 is my favorite part in all of Haiykuu, and its episodes like this that make it the case. So, so, good. And so motivating/inspiring. Its impossible to watch this show and not be in a better mood after watching it.

This episode contents actually has really special importance for Furudate (the mangaka). This episode’s content is chapter 4 in the manga and apparently it was super stressful for them because their previous manga got cancelled at chapter 4 so they knew they had to go ‘all out’. Funnily enough the scene of Kageyama given his first toss to Hinata was the scene that won over the anime producers too. I’m sure that was really special for Furudate. Can’t imagine the stress and what mangakas go through. Speaking of that scene it gets me soo emotional now. The manga finished two years ago and I know where all these characters end up so the beginning is soo much more moving and it’s astonishing how much is built into these first initial introductions. God I LOVE Haikyuu soo much!!

That's a great touch. I'll keep an eye out for it next time

Hope things get better for you from here on out. I feel you though Goodwin's vids and specifically his life talk can really help get my head out of a dark place.

Ryan is so back

These Haikyuu Goodwin reactions are really keeping my will to live in the positive

benj

The fact that they meet Tsukishima when it's dark (= usually the time when the moon is visible) is kinda poetic :)

My God, you won’t believe how happy I am this video came out. I had one of the worst weeks of this year, and it feels like everything is tumbling down right now. But then I see this, Haikyuu is my comfort anime and you are my favorite YouTuber, so this video just brings me so much happiness. It is moments like this that justify paying for Patreon. Thank you so much for being who you are, and doing what you do, you are amazing and a life saver for me!

God I love this show so much. I haven't rewatched the beginning in quite a while so I've been just enjoying these. Let's just scrap all the other shows and just grind out this whole show LOL (jk) but the more and more you get to know and love these characters the more lessons will come throughout this show. So hyped.

Take a page out of Deku's book and do the "kuuki isu" (air chair? I don't know how they translated it in the dub)

Ryan

Whoops. I'd typed that out and then saw your comment. Good you mentioned it, and I'll go edit mine, haha. But yeah, the Kageyama vending machine meme thing trended for quite a while a few years ago.

Ryan

2:29 "Gutsy" was an interesting translation there for Tanaka's impression of Kageyama. He said "kanji warui" (basically 'unlikeable'), but the point is that it's the same word he uses later to talk about Tsukishima, and that Hinata uses at 14:25, so Hinata has the same first impression of Tsukishima that Tanaka does for Kageyama and Tsukishima alike, haha. 6:21 Tiny detail, but Suga's line, "jaa, reshiibu yaru be" ("okay so, let's do some receiving") makes me strangely nostalgic. The "~be" thing is a local dialect feature for the Tohoku region of Northern Japan. Haikyuu takes place in Miyagi prefecture, and I used to live in Akita on the other side of the mountains, and people really did use "~be" like that. It's a nice little detail that I'm glad they kept it in. The two new first-years' names: Tsukishima Kei (月島 蛍, "moon-island firefly") Yamaguchi Tadashi (山口 忠, the family name isn't really special, but Tadashi means "loyalty")

"How many times is Hinata gonna get hit in the face with the ball?" The answer is...a lot. I'm pretty sure he's received a ball with something other than his arms more often than not lmao.

Nox

Hinata lives over the mountain from school so it's a 30 minute bike ride.

Athena

A fun little detail at around 5.20- Kageyama can't decide between milk and yogurt, so he always presses both the buttons on the vending machine simultaneously to let it decide for him. You'll probably notice it in future episodes too
