Haikyuu!! 1x2 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

Comments

helloooooooo~ I'm here to binge haikyuu :D

Crystalrose

Haikyuu has SUCH a good dub and it deserves all the love

Geneva The Weeba

I gotta rely on the age old blond men mantra here. And we've got quite a few incoming blondies.

Geneva The Weeba

“Every now and then, you need to take a big L,” “There’s always a Connie hair character,” “This guy’s [Daichi] been really nice, but he’s got a monster inside of him,” (ALL FEAR THE TEAM CAPTAIN) “He’s so kind, but he’s kind of terrifying at the same time,” “Should we switch to the dub?” (PLEASE lol. The dub is so good and funny and the dialogue choices are excellent for the teenage boys these kids are. I stand by my unpopular opinion wholeheartedly) “No one tell these kids about girls,” “I am learning about volleyball right now. I am learning about volleyball,” “I wish to love anything the way they love volleyball,” (My thoughts EXACTLY! I yearn for yearning such as theirs) “The only way I see 5 am is through the front side,” “This is the kind of show where you fall in love with the characters,” (I have cried more than once just THINKING about Haikyuu characters and how much I love them and are proud of them. I love each and every one, full stop)

Geneva The Weeba

I think this also might be him at his most vulnerable in the series for a while

Ryan

Hmmm maybe it’s lower budget not too sure. For me if it looks nice, it looks nice so I didn’t notice anything that looked too terrible! But definitely isn’t as bad as the season one animation!

Divya joshi

can't wait for you to get to the bit when hinata eats the previous tiny giants hair and grows 2 feet.

Kiwa Mclachlan

Not yet but I probably will soon. Is the animation just as good cause I watched a little of the first episode on Youtube and it looked way lower budget than the first 3 seasons. Not sure though.

benj

@UndeadDesk So.... that narrows it down to about a dozen? Haha

Ryan

Have any of y'all been watching the new season of dragon prince? It is so insane so far!

Divya joshi

The thing about volleyball is that you are automatically deemed offense if you're tall and defense if you're short. I love that Haikyuu showcases the different ways to be amazing in volleyball. Even if your height goes against what you really want to do, it is not impossible!

Athena

what do i gotta do to get you to watch Ping Pong The Animation... :eyes:

Joseph Hallowell

He will for sure like the characters that go through struggles but can pull themselves out of it

UndeadDesk

Fun fact, the captain you liked (Daichi) is voiced by Rengoku's VA. Totally got that big bro reliable feel

bondbond53

Only anime I prefer dub over sub. One of the best dubs I've heard that make the characters sound natural. Don't mind either way tho

Velocity

It'd be interesting to guess who Goodwin will like most, but I bet it'd change over the seasons.

Ryan

Tanaka really is my favorite character. The true bro. Daichi is awesome, I know you love in. But I think you might like Sugawara the most, out of these 3 that is.

Ardawen

I don't think you should switch to the dub. The voice acting is so much better in the original version.

Ruma Risto

Kageyama's speech about being a setter is so interesting, because yes, it's clear how much he loves volleyball (I absolutely love how his whole body moves, how animated he is, while usually being way more stoic), but his words also show the mental state he's in and the danger that comes with it. Being a setter is everything to him, he clings to it almost desperately and I feel like it's more than just a matter of pride. There is a lot of fear underneath the surface, right under that thick layer of passion and drive.

Swanlady

As many others have already echoed, I definitely do think you should see if you can get different subs instead of switching to the dub.

Willhoe

Nah these subs straight up just use really vulgar language which is way overboard anything that the characters ever actually say, which just kinda sucks.

Willhoe

pls dont change to the dub🥲🥲

Hannan

Yea these subtitles are...not great. Crunchyroll definitely has the best subs, but if you can't access it in Korea (I saw your other comment about it), I would suggest trying to find a reliable free site (since you already pay for crunchyroll, it cancels out lmao). The only one I know of that has okay subs is animefrenzy (.vip i think is the domain rn). I double checked at least this episode, and it seems to use similar subs as crunchyroll (i.e. they don't drop the r-word in that sentence. most normal subs have hinata say "are you actually stupid" or something to that effect). I think the swearing is normal tho, from what I remember Kageyama swears a handful of times in the first season.

Nox

@benj I didn't really know anything about volleyball either before starting Haikyuu. I got super into it after watching the show though and regularly catch up with irl matches. But yeah, the slice of life stuff and the characters definitely take the front seat in the show and adding volleyball into the mix is a great bonus.

Bighead

110% positive other people will say this {Edit: Sacha already DID say it, haha}, but perhaps one of the reasons you feel Daichi's power subconsciously is because it's the same voice actor as Rengoku Kyojuro, haha. (Other VAs: Suga = Kingdom Hearts Sora, Haku from Spirited Away; Tanaka = Edano Tsuyoshi from Mob Psycho) A few new characters, a few new names: - Captain, Sawamura Daichi (Daichi = 大地, 'great+land', but probably more like "great foundation") - Vice-Captain, grey-haired Sugawara Koushi (Koushi = 孝支, basically 'senpai+support') - "Connie" Tanaka Ryuunosuke's name is actually just a reference to how the "tough guy exterior, warm interior" type of character is stereotypically named like that. - Manager, Shimizu Kiyoko (清水 潔子 Shimizu is a common last name, but it means "pure water," and then Kiyo = gracious/righteous) 12:10 "Should we switch to the dub?" Sacha and Mike Kamuy mentioned this, but these subtitles certainly have... personality? Haha. It's my first time seeing them, and they definitely add their own twist on things. Hinata definitely wasn't that coarse (although right before that Kageyama kinda was and they didn't do anything with that... 🤔). For me, I was surprised at 14:00 when they have Kageyama saying "You'll be turned away unless we go together." Japanese is just like Korean in that you don't usually say the subject when it's understood, so I guess we don't 100% know for sure who Kageyama was talking about, but it sounded to me more like "we'll BOTH get turned away unless we work together," not that he was talking about just Hinata. Anyway, I agree with Aidan that what's important is the overall story, and I'm confident you can see through it. 21:33 The lack of experience thing... I think one thing that's important to keep in mind is that there is no such thing as a "regular season" in Japan. Getting game experience is really hard, since the only way to play outside the 3 official tournaments every year is to organize "practice matches" with other schools, and that takes coordination and effort if you're not an already established powerhouse team with people knocking at your door. The only three "official" tournaments are all single-elimination brackets (i.e. lose one game and you're out): --> School year begins in April 1) "Inter-High" (local qualifiers in May-ish, national finals in July. Most 3rd years retire after this to focus on studying) 2) "Spring Tournament" (local qualifiers in October, national finals in January. 3rd-years forcibly retire after this. It's called "Spring" because it used to be in late February, but they moved it up two months to allow more 3rd years to play, and to make time for...) 3) So-called "Players Championship" (newly created, minor, in February, only at local level. First time for new teams without the 3rd years present to see how things go) --> School year ends in March

Ryan

Oh I will be most DEFINITELY nerding out over the Hayashi Yuuki soundtrack, but mostly starting in Season 2. It's like a whole secondary plot in the background. For anyone who wants to get into music, this is a masterclass in what we call "programmatic composition" (where the music tells the story in parallel with the action).

Ryan

I'm going to be listening for that now haha

Alex G

The OST for both shows is incredible so makes a lot of sense

benj

The training arcs are by far my fav part of the show, all the slice of life schoolboy stuff is what I enjoy the most, the volleyball kinda takes a backseat for me. If I was a volleyball player or a fan of watching the sport this show would probably be one of my all time favs, still an amazing series ofc.

benj

Bruh I haven't even watched the episode 1 reaction yet lmfaoooo

benj

The same person who composed the music for My Hero Academia did the soundtrack to this show too. Just a fun fact.

Miguel

idk where you're watching i've seen many different haikyuu subs but these sure are the weirdest xD

i_am_jam

This show is definitely super character centric, focusing on teamwork, trust and the bond these characters share. Not to forget the generous amounts of wholesome training arcs sprinkled throughout the seasons. It also does a good job of explaining the rules quite well, that on watching about 3-4 matches in the show, you should be able to get a hang of it. And as much as the games are spectacular to watch, Haikyuu wouldn't be as popular as it is if it weren't for the great cast of characters. So theoretically speaking, this should be the perfect show for you. Hope you go on to love and enjoy it as much as I did!!

Bighead

Oh boy! I thought I recognised these fansubs in the first episode. I do hope you change the subs for this one because that R word in particular was pretty unpleasant and something that would never be said by the characters. If I remember correctly from another reactor (who didn’t change their subs untill season 2) these fansubs use that word and other ‘liberties with insults’ fairly often. Of course you immediately love Daichi as his VA is the same as Rengoku in Demon Slayer 😄 But that aside I love how it’s established in his introduction episode that he is most definitely a dreamer too but much more stable and grounded. It’s a great combination as a captain/leader. The senpais really do shine indeed!

Sacha

"sucker for training" - good, me too. That is like, a good portion of this show.

Aidan Pullen

I figured! The edginess seems to be a giveaway...

Alex G

This might be surprising to hear from me but... school comes first!

Alex G

You were actually pretty spot-on with the sub comment, because these are unfortunately the maligned fansubs that use very crude language and often not all that fitting for their characters or the wholesome vibes of the series. The r-word for example, is never used by any character in the Anime/Manga, but the fansub loves to throw in edgy words frequently. Super excited to finally be a patron and everything that you're reacting to right now + March Comes in Like a Lion next week is gonna be special <3

DefensiveOnion

I think people give subs like this too much flack. Mostly what matters is they capture the meaning and feeling of what's being said, and these subs seem to do it well enough. Direct translations wouldn't properly convey everything. That said, it's totally up to you if you wanna switch which subs you're using or whatever else - I'll watch regardless.

Aidan Pullen

It's killing me that I'm so behind on these reactions, but these college classes aren't going to take themselves! I shall return soon to watch best and most accurate sports anime and 3-goatsu no Lion. Seriously, though, Haikyuu is amazing in terms of accuracy. Both my father and I played volleyball for upwards of 5 years each and it's SO relatable.
