Haikyuu!! 1x1 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

Sorry for the late reply but yes! Same person. Good memory :D

Yeah the sub for Cowboy Bepop and FMAB are really really good as well and are very comparable to the dub in terms of quality, I just slightly prefer the dubs for those shows. That further supports my claim that the overall quality of subs is just so much higher on average than dubs, even when the dubs are really popular or widely considered really good, the subs for those shows are still pretty much just as good. But yes 99% of the time, subs are better than dubs, which makes sense considering the shows themselves are made in Japan by japanese people and writers, so it just works better in its native language. Also I like the over the top voice acting by Japanese VA's, like in Kaguya Sama for instance. It adds to the enjoyment of the show imo.

“We’re starting off with a metaphor for life. I like where this is going,” “I was into volleyball for like 2 seconds in high school,” “Episode 1: The End and the Beginning. Okay, The Bible/Xenogears. I am the alpha and the omega, beginning and the end,” “Something tells me Shou is not the loosen up type,” “Why does this guy [Kags] look so badass?” “You caught me as I was about to shit my pants, more like it,” “Shou seems to be that beautiful, unbridled heart and spirit, whereas [Kageyama] is grit and experience and reality that Shou doesn’t have,” “Your experiences are just the experiences you had, they’re no indication of what you’re really capable of,” “He’s so motivated he just regained full control of his bowels,” “Does the potential scare you, Kageyama? Or does it make you feel alive?” (OOH that’s a GOOD one. I’m going to be using this irl) “I love how his goal is just playing longer,” (aaand one of the biggest and best themes grasped in the first episode, as expected) “Everyone knows greatness when you see it, even if you hate it,” “This is making me want to go train. For something, anything,” (I’ve always done pushups and the like while the Haikyuu intro and outros play lol) “And if the volleyball anime doesn’t work out, you’ve got a harem one waiting,” (Methinks the shippers of the haikyuu fandom have taken that to heart lol)

Nyashaxo

Can't wait for this one! This is one of my favorite series of all time. Such a feel good show with an inspiring message.

Tispy Wombat

not sure if you'll see this because it's on a post from a few days ago but I simply don't agree, there are plenty of terrible dubs but to say that 99% are like that is a bit of a stretch, the dub vs sub argument accounts for so much toxicity in anime fan bases and it's really quite pointless, how you first watched is what makes you dislike the other about 70% of the time I'd guess, as someone who prefers to watch in sub there are so many great dubs of shows that I watched in sub, HxH and JJK have fantastic dubs regardless of the fact that I first watched them in Japanese. Also most native Japanese speakers will tell you that the voice acting is just as over the top and at times cringe as in English, do you really thing anyone goes "awgh-kghau-ough" after they get surprised? 😂 and for the record I'm actually currently watching FMAB in sub and I'm finding it holds up just as much as the dub, it's just another example of people judging something on how they first watch it.

Jeremy Ocasio

Fuck this show is so goddamn good. I have a feeling I'm gonna love it even more with this being my first rewatch.

benj

This is such a dream for you to watch Haikyuu! Let the PEAK fiction begin! Hinata Shoyo is such an incredible MC for this story. This first introduction to him honestly makes me cry now (knowing his journey and where he ends up) because there’s something soo beautiful in his goal and deceleration and how simple it is towards the end of the episode. “I’ll stay on the court the longest”. That’s all you need to know about this kid. On the surface it’s not a big lofty goal but it’s a goal that going to take a lot of hard work and heart because to stay in that place you need to keep winning. For three years of middle school he was alone without anyone to guide him but he never lost that pure unbridled love for volleyball. Also this manga came out in 2012 in a time that boys volleyball in Japan was at an extreme low point. But this story caused the numbers to absolutely skyrocket! Not only do the Japanese Volleyball Team talk about Haikyuu and how much they are inspired by it but many other countries’ teams and pros do to.

Sacha

Looking forward to March Comes in Like a Lion next week. I think Haikyuu will balance well with it, the shows are quite different thematically and in tone.

Javier

lmfao please go off on this reaction series king, I want to be a PhD of Japanese Volleyball by the end of this show.

benj

Haikyuu!!! Let's go, it's honestly one of my favorite shows. Just so inspiring and motivating. I'm ready to go along this journey once again!

Aura Y

benj do you underestimate me? Careful or I will start commenting on the historical origin of the rules of volleyball, and the etymology of their terms in Japanese.

Ryan

Welcome to Haikyuu, also known as, How i met your father.

Ardawen

@Jake yooo thats sick. I never played soccer in school I was a baseball/basketball player but since I graduated I've fallen in love with watching soccer and now its pretty much the only sport I follow.

benj

I feel like this is gonna be the first of many comments explaining Volleyball rules in detail to Goodwin lmfaooo

benj

To read the scoreboard, the scores for each team are in the white and the set number in the middle is in yellow. There are 3 sets, best 2 out of 3 wins. To win a set it is the first team to 25 points. If the teams are tied, they must score 2 consecutive points in a row, aka beat them by 2 points.

Athena

I really love the imagery Haikyuu has throughout the show. Kageyama's king motif, Karasuno's crows...It's so cool and really beautiful.

Athena

I just use soccer when talking to all fellow Americans so I don’t have to say “American football” lol and just use football when talking to anyone from outside the US. Definitely my favorite sport, my whole family grew up playing it all 12 years of grade school and at least 3 of the people I played with/against in high school went on to the MLS after college

Jake White

Yay! I'm excited for you to share even more language knowledge with us!

Athena

YES MY FAVORITE SPORTS ANIME

Athena

omg haikyuu ??

tanasia

I think my response to that would have spoilers, so I'll hold out for now benj, but it'll come. :)

Ryan

Ooh new show :D Haven't watched this yet.

iaani

Funny how you say you didn't like the show until episode 8 when for me my favorite stretch(s) of the entire show now being caught up are the first half of both S1 and S2 lol. The volleyball games get super boring and repetitive, but the slice of life schoolboy stuff is what I am here for.

benj

Nice detail. :)

Ryan

Hooray. :) The speech at 10:00 makes me particularly happy you're watching this. All of the themes you discuss will be developed in detail. I actually didn't like the series until about Episode 8 my first time, but looking back, I appreciate the early episodes a little more. Hoping you enjoy the journey. Culture/language notes: 27:30 "What's with the crow?" So, the school name "Karasuno" is karasu+no (烏野) crow+field. So, the teammates on Karasuno are all crows, haha. If you ever see 6 crows, then that's how many players are on the court at any point in time. The author apparently chose them because they wanted the protagonists to be more stereotypical villain-looking and have the rival schools be more stereotypical protagonist-looking. Like Karasuno, all of the names in Haikyuu (like with most series) are chosen for some reason. They're realistic names (so, not quite "Kaminari Denki" level of punny-ness), but just chosen for a purpose. I'll try to point them out as we go, but the two main characters we're introduced to here are: Hinata Shouyou (日向 翔陽 "in the sunlight" "soar yang") and Kageyama Tobio (影山 飛雄 "mountain shadow / in the shadow of the mountain" "fly hero") So: last names are opposite, but the flying part is similar. 18:10 Yes. It was 7-23 in the second set. Volleyball in Japan is (mostly) first to 25, win by 2, best-of-3 sets. 8:00 Kageyama's quoted as saying, basically, 'did you come here to make memories?' Clubs in Japanese schools are usually self-aware of their standing as competitive or non-competitive. The top schools might really put their effort into becoming the very best with athletic prowess, but most schools don't realistically have a shot at that, and it takes MONUMENTAL effort to push through that inertia and try to become a true contender because the people who join a non-competitive club (sports or music or otherwise) usually do it more to have fun, make friends, and experience youth. "Let's make good memories" is sort of the trope motto/slogan for those schools. This theme will come back.

Ryan

the dub is complete trash compared to the sub, which goes for 99% of dubs when comparing it to the sub. Cowboy Bepop and FMAB are the exceptions, with maybe a few others you can count on two hands. The other 10,000+ anime shows and movies have subs that are far superior to dubs. also I found the humour in this show to be fantastic in sub, I was laughing all the time, just like I do with other Comedy anime that I watch in sub.

benj

Haikyuu cures depression confirmed

benj

Yeah but the British invented the sport and if they say its Football, than its Football. I am from America and I watch European Football (soccer) religiously, its by far my fav sport and I enjoy watching it so much. But yeah if the English say its Football, than its Football... they literally created it lol

benj

Yesssss, yesssssss..... you are fulfulling the prophecy Goodwin.....

benj

Genius Pilot. A truly unbelievable amount of foreshadowing takes place in these short 24 mins. This is the perfect way to introduce your two main characters in a long running anime shounen, similar to the Bakugo x Deku setup in the pilot of MHA. Cannot wait for you to continue watching this, but with all the current seasonal anime and with you saying you're also gonna start March comes in like a Lion soon, how often are you thinking we gonna get Haikyuu uploads? Like once a week maybe? I'm not complaining obviously, you're giving us shit tons of content from so many different shows and I love it. But I hope that watching this show so periodically won't effect your enjoyment of it or ability to remember all the different storylines and characters and stuff... not that this is a very complex show or anything but it very much so is worthy of your total attention, this is an anime classic and a must watch for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the medium.

benj

Precisely, yes. :) The sport actually used to be called "soccer" more broadly in the UK because "football" meant "rugby football," but then when rugby started to be called just "rugby," then "association football" took over as "football," whereas in the US, they had American football. It's all a big mess, as most things that start in Britain and venture out into the world are, haha.

Ryan

first my hero now haikyuu my dreammmm

jess

One would think that Kageyama is the senpai, but he is actually younger than Hinata and I find that so endearing 😂

Swanlady

I've never been this excited to see you react to a series since My Hero Academia when I first subscribed to your Patreon. This show is such an incredible exhibition of the human spirit and a story about passion. I have no doubt there are so many characters you will fall in love with and I'm especially excited about a couple different character's arcs that you'll fall in love with. It doesn't take long to figure out with the show it's more than just a hype volleyball show and incredibly character driven so I'm excited to see your thoughts. Also is the guy who carries the team on his back that you mentioned the same guy who you related with Bakugou for always winning?

Skyler Anderson

yes YES

bondbond53

I can respect that, personally I don't find that it takes anything away at least not for me I only watched somewhat recently and I can remember actually crying on more than one occasion, as well as cheering out loud, getting visibly upset and yes definitely laughing out loud. But I definitely see your point because I know that the beginning wasn't nearly as funny to me in Japanese, maybe that's also part of the language barrier though, it's possible that native japanese speakers laugh just as hard when watching the show as English speakers do when watching the dub ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ just a thought

Jeremy Ocasio

omg its the same for me!! i was depressed for years and coincidentally i started haikyuu at the same time i started to get better 😭🥺

Hannan

Yep! If I’m not mistaken and remembering properly, back in the day it was used just like how someone from the UK today might say “footballer.” If someone back then was pointing at a football player they’d say, “that guy’s a soccer.”

Jake White

Hypekyuu!!! We love a good squeaky shoe on the court!

Bighead

I personally don't hate the dub, just find it incredibly funny, that it takes away from the show. But to each their own.

Bighead

Im a big fan of both, but i will say that the dub takes a more comedic approach while the sub is more serious.

UndeadDesk

IM SO EXCITED

macrowave

I love this show, I'm sure you made the best decision for most viewers but personally I think people who hate the Haikyuu dub are crazy. I ended up switching from sub to dub after 10 episodes and I couldn't be happier. I think the sub vs dub argument is really dumb tho and everyone should enjoy shows the way they want to :)

Jeremy Ocasio

Really? That is a fun fact.

Ruma Risto

Thank you so much for starting this show!! It’s incredibly impactful for me since I watched it during the pandemic when I could learn more about myself. Everything about this show makes me want to cry happy tears, I love the boys so much and the lessons are wonderful to watch again. This is probably my 8th time rewatching it with another reactor and I’m so excited for you to go on this journey!!! And you probably already know this if you’ve watched future episodes already, but the crow is important because it’s the school’s mascot. Crow in Japanese is karasu and the high school’s name is Karasuno. This show isn’t subtle when it comes to mascots for schools but it makes it easier to remember all of the teams (there will be a lot, but I’m certain you’ll love them all)!

PinoyAkoPH

I highly recommend listening to this opening on YouTube channel the first take, name of the song is Imagination and band is Spyair. My maybe favorite anime op. On first take they have one take hence the name The first take and there is bunch of other amazing performances as well.

Marko

HxH will have it's day!

Alex G

i've been voting for HxH in your polls for over a year, but damn was haikyuu always a close 2nd favorite for anime I wanted your reaction to, I'm thrilled you are starting it!

i_am_jam

I'm so glad you're starting this! I watched this show at a point in life when it was incredibly impactful for me. I was coming out of a bad depressive episode, and this show's energy helped me out a lot. There's a lot of good messaging, and the show is just generally feel-good and inspiring. Also, I feel like there's been a shift in more recent popular media to lean towards the gritty, dark shows (at least in western media), and so Haikyuu is a welcome break from that - I'm really pumped to watch it again with you and hear your thoughts!

Aidan Pullen

Fun fact: the word “soccer” actually came from the UK as it was originally an abbreviated term for ‘football association member’ lol

Jake White

Words cannot fathom the level of hype I have rn to watch this reaction

M2GZ

Oh YEEEEEEES I love Haikyuu, this show is amazing.

JustMeDude

OH MY GOD LETS GOOOOOO

Hannan

I've been waiting for this! Haikyuu actually made me care about volleyball. I was more of a football (or soccer for you americans) girl in high school.

Ruma Risto

*Palpatine voice* Looooooong have I waiteddddd

Rice

I didn’t know this was coming, I can’t wait for this! You’re going to enjoy this show so much!!!
