“We need a light in the darkness, and it’s not going to be Thorfinn for a while,” “Just another slow-paced episode of Vinland Saga where nothing happens,” “There’s one thing I can predict: everyone is going to hell. Everyone is creating a hell they are living in,” “You were sleeping during the death-blow,” “I’m disappointed in people’s inability to kill me,” “How can such a terrible person be so awesome?” “You’re not going to remove evil from the world through killing,” “You’re probably very concussed,” “There’s a part of luck that’s connected to preparedness,” “They’re contributing to the same hell that they hate. They’re creating a new hell for others to escape the hell that they have so far experienced,” “-until someone can fill those huge gigantic heroic Jesus shoes,” “Pain is not a guarantee-er of wisdom,”

Now that u know askelad's backstory i wanted to mention that something someone pointed out to me was if u re-watch previous episodes, whenever he makes an oath on his father's name Olaf, he doesn't keep it, but when he says his ancestor's name, Artorius, he keeps his word.

Cheesebit

Damn I’m so glad we finally got to this episode. The scene of Askeladd vs his father was actually the first scene I saw of this show and what got me to actually watch it

Billy Nowosielski

Yup it's a must watch for me. But it might be a while since there are so many movies and Q&As to do

Alex G

This is totally unrelated, do you plan on watching the Fruits basket Prelude movie? Since it's out on streaming services soon?

Thorfinn realizing he's been full of rage since he was 5-6 years old, carrying around nothing but anger and pain for most of his life without progressing anywhere... He has a loooong way to go, and probably hasn't even accepted this realization yet, but for the first time he's looking inward and seeing wrongness there. He doesn't know quite how to identify or fix it, but now that he sees the hole he won't be able to unsee it. This show is just tragic and beautiful.

Musicisum

i feel like i love this show more and more everytime i see someone react to it. slowly becoming my favorite anime

DefaultGoblin

i love askeladd's backstory and i love where thorfinn is at now....although i'm coming in with hindsight of having seen the series and read some of the manga god I'm just so excited for u to see the rest of this

One of the most crazy things is that Askeladd has been Thorfinn’s “father” longer than Thors was. Thors was only Thorfinn’s dad for 5-6 years while Askeladd has been around for nearly double that (10-11 years). At the moment Thorfinn’s memory of Thors is long gone by this point outside of his dreams and memories of the day he was killed. It’s shown by his rewind flashback at the end of this episode as no flashback of his childhood before meeting Askeladd is shown. It’s like all memory of his past before his desire for revenge is gone.

}the answer askeladd gives to canute about why he wouldn´t be king "I´m just a viking", considering his deep rooted hate for warriors, specially Vikings, he, being descendant of olaf as well, confirms that bjorn was right, askeladd hates himself.

@23:31 I feel like that was sort of a silly question, just given the timing tbh lol. The fact that Askeladd took the time and effort at all to carry Bjorn’s body back for burial by himself (ton of B alliteration lol) instead of just leaving him out there or telling underlings to do it, is a fairly decent indicator that yes he does care lol he just doesn’t quite wear his emotions on his sleeves or display them as prominently as others

Jake White

Well put, thank you for that

Alex G

One of the more hard hitting things about this episode, at least for me, is just how easily Askeladd beat Thorfinn and the implications of that. Looking back at their first shown duel post time skip and seeing how Askeladd most likely just faked struggling during the duel to trick Thorfinn into thinking he has a chance, and thus more likely to stay and continue going on suicide missions for him, is just sad.

This is one of the main episodes I've been looking forward to since you started reacting to this series. Man, Askeladd... What a character. "I'm just a Viking."

Good reaction, But I think you missed a lot of Askeladd's humanity and nuance in his personality throughout the show, one thing to know is that the show isn't gonna romantasize the Viking lifestyle or life in general at that era, Nobody is gonna be a "good guy", Thors being the exception and the show makes sure you know that he isn't a person meant for this world as it is (and still calling him a good guy is debatable since he also participated in killing and was one of the best at it before "changing" once he had children) For example, Askeladd killing Bjorn here is, as weird as it seems, adds to Askeladd's humanity, we knew Bjorn is gonna die (he said it himself that he was suffering from his wound and that it was fatal) and considering their faith (Valhala) he wanted to die a warrior so he asked Askeladd to finish him off, Askeladd agreed and clearly showed remorse at not making him suffer less when he missed his vital point and even called him a friend in his last moment basically answering the one thing that Bjorn was struggling with his entire life to let him pass out in peace, this alone answers your Question about what he feels, he clearly cares about him and clearly had an emotional attachement to him and makes him saying that he was his "only friend" very believable (or else why would he say it). Same with Askeladd giving his previous men who betrayed him gold and sparing them and even telling them to leave the world of war and start a new family, he wants them to leave the hell he is in, the one he can't leave himself because of the purpose he feels like he has to achieve (saving his home country of Wales by making Canute a king). We see Askeladd's humanity throughout the whole show while still not making him a "good guy" because he is a Viking and Viking were bad, this is the genius about this show and how amazing it is a making these nuanced characters. Back in the begining of the show Askeladd actually wanted Thors to lead them and was respecting Thors but the pressure from his men (shown by them being weirded out by what he asked Thors to lead them) and their action (Bjorn taking Thorfinn hostage) made him back off, basically showing that a big part of what Askeladd does is partly pressure from his environement and the culture that was there around that time. But one genius thing this episode did is show that Askeladd himself despite all his qualities didn't want to be the king because he despited Vikings and thought they were bad and that there was "no beauty to them" but his last sentence as answer to Canute was "I'm a Viking", he has the self awareness to know that in order to reach his goals which are mainly pushed by his hatered for the danes (Vikings) he in turn became one of them by participating in that culture (pilaging, killing and all that) and by doing that he doesn't have the right to be the king and that being part of why he wants Canute to do it, Canute being a person raised differently who at this point never involved himself in Viking culture and who has a goal of bring paradize instead of participating in the hell that exists. And this is also part of Askeladd's frustration with Thorfinn in this epîsode. There is too much subtle things this show does ever since the first episode that I couldn't mentioned but the actions of every character and there motivations and thoughts really makes a lot of sense once you see everything they do and the context for it. The series might seem like a violent story about murder and killing but once you understand it, it is actually about the opposite, about how could anything other than violence and hatered rise from this world but that would be more apparent in the next seasons
