Comments

“‘And now having killed the king and become the same evil my character arc has come to a tragic conclusion’,” “True bachelor pad. Definitely break-up bachelor pad. What’s the point of cleaning your room if no-one’s coming over?” “There is a potential trap in glamorizing or glorifying being troubled as a form of creative inspiration,” “And just like that, carbonara. Boom,” “Someone hasn’t seen Mary Poppins,” “She did walk on water. Does that make her Second Lady Jesus? Lady Jesus 2,” (Tohru can be Girl Jesus and Violet can be Lady Jesus, it's perfect) “It’s a different kind of grief: the grief you’ve caused yourself,”

where the fuck was i yesterday i cant i believe i missed this upload and of Alex being this emotional Matthew B has it right this is just the beginning

Brimmy

I totally forgot what day it was and didn't expect an upload, and it was for this episode that I've been looking forward to this whole time. Go figure. KyoAni + Running scenes = perfection. There are so many beautiful shots in this anime, but this one is probably the first one I think about whenever I see the words "Violet Evergarden." I just want to point out that in the main poster for the series, Violet is carrying around the exact parasol that she received this EP. Just goes to show how important this event is to her story. I have never been so emotionally attached to an umbrella before. (Btw Goodwin,do not search for Violet Evergarden posters online as this can lead you to spoilers for future events in the story.)

We all cried with Alex today

Man, I can't even say anything about you crying because that same scene gets me every time lmao. This is my favorite episode of the series personally, does everything it wants to do so expertly. Really great I got to shed tears along with you XD

Yeah, I was really upset that she had to find out like that. Maybe I'm a bit naive, as I've never been in a situation like this, but I would want to be told from the jump if someone I loved so much was gone, MIA, or what have you. I think it's better to know than to be left wondering for who knows how long. Not knowing is far more painful. But in any case, yet another episode that always gets me! This story really knows how to tug on those poor heartstrings.

Goodwin cried during episode 3 already. I wrote it right here in my Goodwin tears logbook.

One of my favorite parts of Violet's character is that she's always saying she doesn't understand other people's emotions and asking questions to clarify but in reality she's actually very perceptive, she just doesn't trust the assumptions nor think that they're enough. Most of us feel that we're so in-tune with other's emotions that we stop ourselves short and avoid going deeper with the other person and getting to the precise point. We graze the surface of the water whereas Violet dives in until she can reach the bottom, and it's only because she believes that's what everyone else does. That that's what's normal. How many people do you think understood that the playwright was hurting, wallowing away and drowning himself in alcohol but merely gave their sympathies and avoided trying to be upfront with him about such things? They took his actions as an undeniable truth: a man who's lost his wife and daughter is unable to move on with his life. But Violet doesn't accept that as the whole truth. She thinks there has to be more to it and she's right. The whole truth is that he's a man who's lost his wife and daughter- and doesn't know how to process it or find relief. Violet, in her innocent naivety, pushes past social barriers and gets to the root of things, allowing the opportunity for it to finally be exercised. It's similar to how children can get away with asking bold questions that can lead to a healthier conversation of whatever topic than if an adult asked that same question because the recipient doesn't feel the preconceived judgment of adults, just the innocent curiosity of a child. Thinking about this just makes me realize how big a spoonful of humility I could stand to swallow on such matters. Another thing I noted in this episode for the first time was that Gilbert's brother scorns Violet for typing the letters with the "same hands" she used to murder, but Violet's hands are actually not the same ones that killed all those people as she lost them at the end of the war and was given the new metal ones for which she has used to type all the letters

Alex Begley

Yay! Tears! I love that you shed your first tears for this show as the same episode Violet sheds her first emotional tears as well :)

Rest in Peace to Maruko Tatsunari, an animation director of Violet Evergarden who died in the 2019 Arson attack on their studio

benj

Yep. Just like the first time I watched it. Almost the exact same timecode too. These people are MASTERS of their craft.

This is my second favorite episode in all of Violet Evergarden. It was really hard for me to watch though and I have never rewatched it so this reaction is gonna be tough to finish. I literally cannot even begin to imagine the pain and suffering that father is feeling. I am totally unable to even begin to imagine what it must feel like to bring a beautiful child into this world as your own kin, only to have to sit there and watch them slowly die beside you. Millions, actually probably billions, of parents throughout history have had to watch their own children die at some point, and for me this episode does an incredible job at conveying those emotions of greif and sorrow, as extreme as it might be.

benj

The water scene is definitely one of my favorites in the whole show.

Megan

Be...gins???

Alex G

And so it begins

Matthew B

This episode is really touching and gets me super emotional even on like the 50th watch lmao.

Jak

It got me bad

Alex G

Ahh it got you Goodwin. I tear up every time.
