So I've never watched this but I wanted more Alex content so I'm watching it now and I'm super glad.
Also I didn't know that wit studio did this! I've been wanting to see more work from wit since I saw attack on Titan seasons 1 through 3! I'm totally pumped

This is gonna be awesome - you’re 100% right on your perspective of the antagonists. I don’t want to say much to avoid spoiling, but honestly, they’re amazing. God it’s so hard not to allude to some characters here

Yes! So damn hyped for this series. Larger than life characters aside, its very grounded in quite accurate historical events of that period for an anime. The character analysis are where this show shines. When we finished it, me and my wife just sat and discussed the characters for two hours, mostly just gushing at how great they were.

The worst part of watching reaction to this show is if you have to watch while they are doing the episodes cause this is one of those series that gets better after each episode and A show I binge multiple times... Sooo struggle to wait cause you feel like a little kid just wanting them to get to that one good part but with this episodes its every few episodes is - thats my favorite part. Keep watching uurrggg But man you are in for a ride especially if you are a bit of a history nerd - you dont need history knowledge to appreciate it but just appreciate it - The charachters in this show man is amazing makes me want to be a true warrior :) but the best thing is this world and real history mixed in... Now cancel all reactions and just do 5 of these a day please ;)

“In anime, a family is just something to lose,”
“Year 987. ‘Hzuhr-var-von-de-gurg-er’,” (Goodwin trying to say European words is never going to cease to amuse me)
“-and then it rains blood,”
“Rain is for weaklings,”
“This dude is trying to choke him out underwater. That’s not survival instincts. That’s just spite,”
“There will be war. And vikings. And boats,”
“SO many blond people. Have I died and gone to Viking Valhalla?” (That’s what I’ve been SAYING. Take your bets now, folks, will he like Thorfinn, Askeladd, Canute, or Thorkell most for the blond boy simpage?)
“That is the most jacked cow I have ever seen in my entire life. What. are they feeding it and where can I get some,”
“And we set right to work: shredding its resources,”
“There’s a vacuum between his innocence and what this world probably is,” (Pack it up boys, he’s got a major point of the show less than 10 minutes in)
“JOR-min-gund-er,”
“It’s possible that this whole existence is hanging on by a thread, but he’s decided to be that thread,”
“Whatever you’re born into can feel like it’s the default state of things,”
“There’s a lot of perspective to be had,”
“And birds,”
“You can’t put a price on your values,”
“He’s too good for this world, he’s making me nervous. He’s a Mufasa father, Mufasa character,”
“I’m already in love with Thors. I am deeply in love with this man. Even though he’s not blond, you know, but we’ll forgive him for that,”

Incredibly excited for you to watch this. One of my favorite manga that has never let me down. The character writing and themes of this show resonate deeply with me and I know you will have a blast with this beautiful adaptation of the beginning of the series.

This is all based on my fallible memory of what I learned in my anthropology courses so I could obviously be off about some of the things I mentioned, but that’s the basic gist of the importance of that serpent in its context.

Sorry for so many extra comments, I’m just having a few more thoughts than I expected upon 2nd viewing of this episode lol.
But Thors (main dark haired father character) gives heavy Vander from Arcane vibes. Basically the community dad, who tried to give up his life of fighting long ago, that’s clearly carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders but still does so with impressive grace and leadership skills. Love em

Vinland Saga has hands down the best background art from any anime I've seen so far.
I also read the same guy who oversaw the background art in Vinland Saga will be working on it in Chainsaw Man which is very exciting too. Whoever they are, they're a legend.

Btw vikings did get to canada/nova scotia there are still some viking buildings up so when leif says vinland is west (from iceland) and we see natives that look like natives here in canada it pretty much confirms it, a large continent with massive fields and grass

So I can't really speak on the major themes of the show yet because we haven't actually been introduced to all of them. Next episode I'll have more to say.
For now, I'm extremely happy to see Vinland Saga featured on the channel. I remember binge watching this series myself last fall and after finishing season 1 my jaw was dropped and I could not think about anything else for several hours.
Essentially, you're in for a ride. This story is far, far deeper than viking action fights and pretty visuals. That's just the icing on top.

Just a note, this anime, just like AOT, is animated by WIT Studios! They continue to excel at their scenic shots in this show too.

Harald is buried a 10 minute drive from where I live. For an anime there is a surprising amount of history in here, and the crazy fights in the show that seems super extreme are very similar to how the battles were described in the stories that were written from back then. Men cutting down 4 warriors with a single stroke etc. I just really love how its anime , but still.. pretty respectful to the source material.

Agreed, it's amazing how great this episode manages to be on it's own. Despite the fact that, aside from the first intense action scene, it's somewhat of a tranquil episode, it manages to be riveting while establishing the world and things to get invested in, some clearly articulated and some just hinted at.

(Taking inspiration from Nick’s comments during Fruits Basket and writing my initial reactions after watching each episode myself)
Episode One:
Greetings Vinland Saga fans. And thank you Goodwin for forcing me to start a new anime that I have been putting off watching for three years now! And uhhh yeah…
WHY the F*** have I not watched this show until today?
That is what I like to call a “Perfect Pilot”. Just wow, where do I even start? I guess I might as well start with the intro… instantly with the first frame I knew this show had quality production, of course I was expecting it going in as I knew Season One was created by the incredible Studio WIT. These are the same geniuses behind S1-S3 of AoT. That opening frame with the focal blur lens effect gives off the feeling that we are really laying down in that wheat field, slowly opening our eyes and clearing our vision to then unveil the gorgeous landscape our initial characters reside in. The transition through what seemed to be a moment of PTSD from our main Father character Thors into the ship battle sequence was very well done, and I loved how the concept of the peaceful tranquil Vinland landscape (Very “Heaven” like) was tied perfectly into the very beginning of the episode, clearly setting up this concept of “going west” and “ a land with no slave traders or war” from the literal first image of the series. That’s what I call great foreshadowing.
Man do I love real gore and action. Sure, watching child heroes with superpowers fight leagues of villains can be extremely entertaining, but there is something about real human war, blood, sweat, and tears that is so visceral and captivating. That entire intro action sequence was absolutely brilliant, from the use of CGI, to the sound effects, to the relentless violence and death. If Vinland Saga has more action like that in store for us later on… this is gonna be one hell of a ride.
If I had to pick one word to describe this pilot, I would pick “Atmospheric”. Everything from the way the snow on the roof was falling off, the subtle lighting changes of a fire inside a dark room, even the morning farm routine of our child protagonist is drawn with meticulous detail and care. Not a single frame felt rushed or out of place, this was a damn movie for 28 straight minutes. And what a movie it was. I was laughing hysterically when it was revealed the man telling the story of adventure to all the kids was actually Leif Erikson himself, I thought it was very naturally done and didn’t feel out of place or goofy, which it very easily could have when using a real life historical person like that who is so iconic.
Everything was set up so well, from the environment, the beautiful OST, to all the different characters, including the annoying sister and Thors, that all the emotional payoff with the rescued slave really hit me hard. I cried when the slave talked about how much he hated his life on the other side of the mountain under chain guy’s rule, and when he was seeing visions thinking Thors and the annoying sister were his wife and daughter, saying that they were sold separately as slaves. Just the sheer effort Thors put into trying to save this guys life, and the fact he gave up that much valuable cattle for a half-dead slave, was truly remarkable.
If Vinland Saga can continue this level of quality narratively and visually for 24 straight episodes, which is an unbelievably daunting task, this series will easily be one of my favorites of all time. But we will see, all I know for sure is that I want to watch more Vinland Saga. In my opinion, that is the only thing relevant to rating a pilot episode, so this was a 10/10 for me.
