In Attack on Titan 4x21 From You 2000 Years Ago, we finally get answers to the most important question posed early on in the show: What's the connection between titans and trees?

Eren transforms into biggest boy titan.

Who is ready for the next ep reaction!!

Sumiya Mayna

I want this so badly too but its just not gonna happen sadly...lmao. I'm not a manga reader but I'm like 100% sure Eren's worldwide genocide is actually gonna just happen. How the series handles this fact...I am most intrigued.

benj

I really don’t want Eren to destroy the world. I need the Scouts to come through and save everything 😭

LudicrouslyLuke

There are so many similarities between the backstories of the two Ymirs. Both were treated as goddesses, but while also being slaves. Then there's the whole fingerpointing scene, which reminded me of when Ymir was blamed by the cult after they were arrested.

jdthebud

Not to mention the intense parallels between historia and ymir. They both sat pregnant on a porch, there’s depictions of them drowning (in reference to s3 pt1 ending song), and I feel like there’s so many more. There’s also parallels between the two Ymirs, since they were both slaves to something. But one became free while the other died a slave.

Katrina Vieira

Some really interesting things I noticed this episode: 1. The close-up shot of the blood-stained flower had 9 petals, symbolizing the 9 titans 2. The number of hands pointing at Ymir was 13, symbolizing the number of years in a titan shifter’s life 3. Ymir’s expression at the end when she realized she was free is the same one Eren made at the end of season 3 after kissing Historia’s hand, when he realized he wasn’t free.

Katrina Vieira

All hail the Goodwin's power of prediction

Geneva The Weeba

So many reactors were genuinely surprised that Eren's desire is to wipe out the rest of humanity, but Goodwin was not phased at all. He has known this man is a menace since at least season 2.

What you said about the timeloop is what I was also thinking. Time is lineair in the beginning, before the loop. Then comes the loop where the people in it (attack titan owners) think they’re in an infinite loop, because they interact with eachother through the memories of the attack titan and coordinate. But when the loop comes full circle time continues in a lineair way. It only looks infinite because we, the viewer, are basically outside of time looking at the show. So actually there isn’t even a loop, only if you were to look at it from above in 2D, when you get a 3D view it’s just a lineair path. Idk if this is correct, just making it up lol it’s early here. Got this idea from another show where it basically was the whole plot, won’t spoil which one. But such a cool concept to think about.

Next week in Attack on Titan: the long awaited Colossal titans beach episode

iaani

I don't think Wit studio would have adapted it then tbh considering how much of her manga stuff they cut. But that would be interesting

Nick

After this episode, I realized that I find Ymir more akin to Mikasa than Eren. It would have been interesting to see the context of AOT if Mikasa was the "main character" and how the story would differ from being told through her eyes. We get a taste of that in some OVA's, but I guess never quite enough for me.

Makima

it all started because someone didn't do his job and let the pig out

Khalid

This just clicked for me too recently after I started to re-watch the series, you're absolutely right. Fascinating stuff.

arcana✦vox

It tends to go like M: Show 1(Aot here or next day, normally) T:Show 2 W: Show 1 Th: Show 2 F: Show 1 Sa: Show 2 +TYE Su: day off And right now, Show 1 is Arcane, and Show 2 is Demon Slayer. There's a rough guideline of regular uploads at 6PM PST, but the key word there is 'rough' lol This is copypasted from fellow Patreon user "Geneva the Weeba", thought I'd share it cause Goodwin said this explanation of the "schedule" is close to as accurate as its gonna get lol.

benj

The first episode is called, "To You, in 2,000 Years" and this episode is called "From You, 2,000 Years Ago". I think since the beginning Ymir was waiting for Eren. He even had memories of the future in episode 1 before he even got titan powers. I'm still processing and im not completely sure what that means but it's an interesting thing to think about.

meg

Hey! I don't want to seem rude but I'm just wondering what the schedule for shows is overall. Just a little disoriented rn with all the new react shows on the patreon and wanna know when to look for everything! If anyone knows or if Alex just wants to reply anything would help! :)

Skyler Anderson

And on Gyuu Tokoyami's birthday, too. :( Lol, all good. Will be excitedly waiting!

Geneva The Weeba

God the reveal of finally getting to see Ymir’s face, and it’s the exact same face of absolute fury and anguish that we saw Eren with after kissing historia’s hand, will always give me chills/make me teary eyed. The storytelling prowess it takes to make an audience genuinely feel for a character introduced this late into the story, is astounding.

Jake White

"He attack, but he also. Sit on you," "I'll just take this. ~yoink~" "If people suggest things, or if you have memories, (shrugs and stares directly into the camera) what else can you do? You gotta do it," "Eren, the angry ghost of Christmas future," "Here, Zeke, let me close your arc for you so you can be irrelevant again," "We all know the character that takes the most abuse. It's definitely Eren.....'s hand. The most disposable means to an end there is," "She found something primordial and divine in her sadness," "She still doing HOUSEWORK. In the desert," "The laws of existence collaborate to create something like a will to survive," "Yelena's not having a great time anymore," "Speaking of sides, this is why I don't like to take them,"

Geneva The Weeba

The titans just have to wait until someone leaks the audio.

MooTuu

I haven’t seen anyone else mention this but I found it interesting that founder Ymir’s backstory was in so many ways similar to that of modern-day Ymir (RIP). Both were used as scapegoats for others’ wrongdoing and suffered brutal consequences as a result of their accepting blame. Just interesting that their connection runs deeper than just their names.

Tope

Eren going for a high KDR this match

Nick

Know what's crazy about life? It struggles against the laws of the universe. It's supposed to go towards entropy, but where the universe favors chaos, life favors order. So it is a will to survive, and it is an endless struggle, because it's fighting against the laws of nature. And so much of life fights other life in order to maintain itself. But part of it also collaborates instead. That's the cruelty and beauty of it.

Kotryna

Yeah Grisha's whole life he's primarily valued saving Eldia. And when it came down to it, as much as he hated the idea of killing children, saving Eldia was more important to him. It was his choice, and most likely he wouldn't have done it if Eren hadn't reminded him, but he did make that decision. Eren Kruger didn't want to kill his fellow Eldians, but saving their race was more important to him. Now, Eren Jaeger, I don't think he wants to destroy the world, but he wants to save Paradis, so he picked his poison.

Kotryna

Zeke: I will jus Euthanize one race Eren: Hold my beer Zeke: Bruh....

ArmdVctr

It wasn't Pixis, sorry to say. It was Shadis, who never drank the wine. I don't think mindless titans were in on the broadcast.

Maia Brodsky

This is unrelated, but if the channel strikes expire Feb 20th, are you planning on making the fruits basket q&a public in YT after the strikes expire?? That'd make sense

Nick

Eren: No way I can agree with a messed up plan like that! Also Eren: Genocide!

ArmdVctr

Just like a tree / some kind of tree like parasite

Alex G

My feeling is that nobody is off the hook. I might have misunderstood but my feeling about the flashback was that it wasn't like there were the good guys (Eldians) and bad guys (Marleyans) but that there were basically just warring tribes and one of them happened to luck out and get titan Ymir. At which point they each wrote their own respective version of the story (Ymir is the devil of earth / Ymir is our lord and savior) which is equally valid just depending on whether Ymir is fighting for you or against you.

Alex G

I don't know why people think Eren has no choice if anything it proves that Eren has a choice and has been using his choices to get his ideal outcome

Ramon Cintron

Something about Ymir is the fact that, when she was stabbed, King Fritz was in disbelief because he knew she could heal from it. This was much like Reiner when Eren invaded, when he didn’t heal because he wanted to die. Brings a whole new level of sadness to Ymir.

Chris Sharpe

Lol yeah that was the saddest character to get wrong

Alex G

The Return of Avertree: Wonderfully Written comments TM

benj

I think there is an important distinction to be made with Eren's character. He isnt a leader and doesnt try to be a leader. He doesnt ask anyone to take his side, in fact he actively pushes away the people closest to him so won't take his side. He knows his actions arent morally right, and he doesnt even bother justifying them or explaining them. Heck he literally calls himself the bad guy, he has no 'holy illusions' he is committing an evil act willingly and openly admitting its from his purely selfish desire not to have his freedom taken. The world declared him their enemy and he has always been the type to crush his enemies before they crush him... its just VERY literal now.

Don Morrison

I find it interesting the way that this episode displays Ymir's backstory, because the first time we see her show any emotion and the most viscerally terrifying thing we see through her perspective happens only AFTER she is told that she is free. Here, she is totally disconnected from any person or group, has no home but a scary-looking forest, and because she's no longer useful to Fritz, his tribesmen can hunt her for sport — it's Ymir alone against the whims of nature and mankind alike. Being subject to the chaos and scariness and aloneness of the world is a different type of fear than what she experienced before, and so even though Fritz let her out into the world, the lesson that she took from it was that this is in fact a cruel world, not a beautiful one — here, there are no wedding ceremonies, only flowers stained with her blood. So, even with all the power imaginable, Ymir doesn't want to be "free," she wants what she sees as the comparative security of Fritz's evil soon-to-be empire, because as long as she doesn't disrupt his order, she won't face the terror of being thrust into the woods like that again. That fear of the unknown world, that desire to cling to security, sticks with her for the rest of her life — I think it's why she saved Fritz — and even after she dies. She's so scared of what she's learned freedom to entail that for 2,000 eternities, she continues obediently building Titans in her peaceful sandbox. It's hell, but better the hell she knows than the one that she doesn't... until Eren comes along and tells her that no, it's not true that you have to stick to this forever, you can choose the world you want, and basically convinces her to release the metaphorical pig and try this "free will" thing just one more time. The question that remains, then, is what she wants to do with this freedom and why. Does she actually want to destroy the world, or is there something else she's after? After all, isn't conquering the world with the Titans exactly what Fritz #1 wanted? Is Ymir leading the way now or is she simply following a different master?

a. tree

Another thing I noticed. The Coordinate in the desert dimension is just a singular pillar of light when Ymir first enters. Then her three daughters take on her spinal fluid and the Coordinate splits off in three directions, funneling this power to the three of them as well. Then when it says that the Eldian race will grow, it shows The Coordinate with many branches going out all over, which I think shows all the lives now connected to it. Neat details.

ComicalSkate

This made me laugh out loud...will Eren just FUCK Mikasa already?!? The show can't end before this happens.

benj

Same. This show would be GOATED if Levi came back to kill Eren and save the world from his genocide.

benj

Honestly I am a bit Dissapointed Was hoping for something Idk more Nuanced? I am not sure how to describe it. But Ive seen this whole "I am becoming the big bad villian that will unite the world at war" cliche alot and while it was done way better I guess wit hhow great the writing has been on this show I was hoping for something else. So now the Warriors and The Scouts who were once mortal enemies now have to put aside their differences and team up to fight a litertal god. That is what is goign to happen and I have always personally be on Eren Side I would still be if his goal is what Armin said it was. Caues litertally all he has to do is completly destory Marley to the point where their government can no longer function as a threat to the rest of the world. I think one thing the show doesn't do right is or at least convey is how local politics play a role in a nation actually going along with war. Guarenteed if this were real life and if one nation saw those giant monstrosities desotry and completly anailate another country. Said Country would think twice about fighting against them. Cause its easy for the world to say "Hey lets unite and figtt the Devils of Paradise" and have this huge huray moment but then its another to see the rumbling happen upfront to the country that started this war. In anycase i suppose it makes for good drama for Eren to have desotry the world and free all the Eldians else were. I just hope before the Scounts DO ANYTHING TEAMING UP they Demand recolitions from Marley and not just their word but something Tangible that would guarentee their freedom. Because Marley is by no means off the hook here at least in my eye and they caused this entire event to happen. But we shall see.

John Carrizales

Yeah this confused tf outta me. Shouldn't they all have royal blood and not just Zeke, Historia, Grisha's first wife, etc.

benj

Mikasa: "Eren... you came back to us?" Eren: *Is a 200-story stegosaurus*

MikeWest

Can I choose Erwin somehow? ...or even Armin at this point with the stuff he was saying this episode.

benj

S1: I will destroy the whole world - Eren while fighting Annie S4: ...

Nick

If so that adds a whole new layer to the scouts being a symbol of freedom. That would actually be insane, it makes a lot of sense too

Nick

Honestly i'm rooting against Erin, hoping Pieck, Armin and Mikasa can team up and make everyone become friends. Wouldn't even be sad if Erin ended up dying.

ErrantSara

So my theory on the magic eel thing Ymir touched is that it's the equivalent to Eitr from norse mythology. It would really add up well considering there was a "first giant Ymir" in norse mythology and that first giant was born out of Eitr.

DennisAnimeFan

Shadis already depressed as hell being a bystander, now people can't even recognize him. He's down bad.

MooTuu

See people think I'm this hopeless optimist that believes in sunshine and rainbows when really I'm capable of the worst kinds of evil.

Alex G

I just realized: End of Season 3: "Humanity hasn't perished outside the walls" Season 4 Erin: "Bet."

ComicalSkate

It does seem a little too perfect that this small, powerless girl finds this thing that helps her become the exact opposite of that. I feel like this might be one of those things that just starts the story and you don't need to know exactly what it is. But it would be cool to find out more.

Alex G

Is there a side bet for someone yelling "EREN"?

Alex G

Ah. That is disappointing :( For a sec I was hoping Pixis would get another shot! But also I was wondering if it wouldn't be possible with all this power to revert titans to their human forms or give them sentience?

Alex G

Now i can see everything in HD! if i was eating pizza i'd of choked on it like i did when i watched SOS Bros vid of this cuz UHHH HEY YEAH WOW THOSE ARE TALL AND TERRIFYING and eren is literally a god now??? if i'm understanding this correctly???

Brimmy

Sure the rumbling is kinda messed up, but Goodwin’s uneven headphones are the true threat to humanity

tundrxdemon

Now the question is, does that weird spine fish thingy that attached to Ymir only allow for the creation of titans. Or perhaps since Ymir was feeling so small and weak in that moment that it manifested its power as a titan. Lets say Erin does destroy everything outside of Paradise. All life, dead. Paradise becomes the Garden of Eden, and The Rumble is basically the Great Flood. Now if that power can be used for more than just Titans and Erin can mold it to say the creation of complex life again then he could repopulate the world and then the only humans left will be Eldians which he can mold as he sees fit with the power. He becomes the literal god of the Earth and Humanity, and could possibly make it so no one has to suffer again. In that case, 2000 years from now all the people of this time, Marley, etc. will be irrelevant and forgotten and it could be a much better world. I doubt that would happen though. And it is definitely not right. But it is a thought.

ComicalSkate

Cool speculation I read earlier, Ymir being stabbed in the heart for the king could be the origins of their war cry "Give your hearts"

Keegan Brakhage

Yeah I can see that. It's that part of the story that bears a huge "risk" for someone like Tohru, at least for an outside observer. Perhaps it's that 1% of Ymir that resents being the traveler and that Eren is speaking to.

Alex G

That was always one of my favorite endings but it's been a very long time. Just went back and watched it and wow! It's even got the kids... eating.

Alex G

One thing is that I would like to see addressed, is since all subjects of Ymir descended from Ymir's 3 daughters, who are also King Fritz's daughters, doesn't that make all subjects of Ymir of royal blood?

John Bass

Tune in next episode for: Zoomy grapple bois with fragile blades vs Literal GOD Place your bets now!

ComicalSkate

Small detail: That wasn't Pyxis there, but actually Keith Shadis (the ultimate bystander)

DennisAnimeFan

The Yaeger brothers: Erin: Genocide Zeke: Genocide Lite Make your choice :)

ComicalSkate

All of that is true but it still doesn't justify murdering hundreds of millions of innocent, uninvolved people. I understand why Eren made his choice but can't justify nor defend it Characters like Armin presented an alternative as well that doesn't involve killing hundreds of millions of people. Eren is protecting his people, but at what cost?

Nick

I'm on Eren's side the world has made it clear they won't let the abuse from centries in the past go so he has to wipe them out since they will try to exterminate them at all cost. Not only would they want to get rid of the threat of people who can turn into giant monsters they also sit on a unique useful natural resource.

Neubaufahrzeug

They are not exactly the same but Ymirs backstory/character reminded me of the traveller story from Fruits Basket

MagnusVD

Lol yeah one of those times that the show granted a request immediately

Alex G

You should rewatch the season 2 outro if you haven’t already. Lots of foreshadowing. Now that’s it’s been animated you can really appreciate it. It was made over 4 years ago, I don’t even think this chapter of the manga was fully written yet. Crazy to think how far Isayama planned ahead.

Megan

Banger analysis as always

Sean D

you said you wanted ymir's backstory in the perfect episode LMAO

lineth pizarro

This was the comment I wrote after watching the episode on Sunday and how I interpreted the episode and show so far. Patreon might auto-delete it for being too long haha

Nick

Just noticed in this episode when Ymir gets shot by an arrow her blood leaks onto a white flower, much like Eren during the ED where blood leaks off his knife and onto the flower. I'm guessing the symbolism there has to do with the cruelty of the world next to the beauty of it. Ymir is also a literal child of the forest in this episode, to bring it back to what Sasha's dad said. The world punished her, a child, for no reason other than being born. It's our duty to keep children out of the forest. And this strengthens my theory that Eren relates to Ymir pretty strongly. Both of them became bound to something they had no real control over, and took on burdens they didn't want to shoulder. Eren is the most lost of any child wandering the forests of the world The result of Ymir being left in that forest alone was more violence, bringing titans to the world. Similar to how Sasha's dad put it when explaining Sasha shot someone and got shot herself by Gabi. Cruelty breeds more cruelty, we need to transcend that cycle. At least that's how I view the message. Also, the white flower petals shown with Ymir this episode are ALSO shown during the ED as Eren's walking through the field. Not to mention, the tree Ymir entered when she obtained the founding titan looks pretty damn similar to the paths/coordinate tree of light There's actually always been symbolism of flowers, from the very first episode. On an even darker note, the blood that goes flying when Dina eats Eren's mom flows in the wind like flower petals too. I've seen a few people say it's drawn so beautifully despite being blood in that first episode. In addition to the bird motif and butterfly motif, I think AOT has a deeper meaning behind its display of flowers too. A lot of people say Isayama's story is about nature vs nurture, and I think that makes a lot of sense. But in Eren's case, despite having such a loving mother, he became a "child of evil" as the ED is named. Not because Carla failed to nurture him, but because the world failed to. Humanity did. Did I word this right? I don't know if it makes sense, or maybe I'm misreading the story. But I think these similarities are on purpose and one day people will be talking about AOT's forest philosophy on a grander scale. One things for certain, Attack on Titan is a modern classic

Nick

The way he addressed subjects of ymir was literally like a God speaking to their subjects Absolutely chilling

Nick

I am going to pretend I never saw this comment

Nick

eren is just god tier lol

Amber

GODDAMN Freida's titan titties are hella thicc. This was the important part of the plot I was focusing on during the intro, totally nothing else hapenning in that scene.

benj

This took a lot longer than anticipated so I'm going to have to delay Demon Slayer by quite a bit today! Sorry for the delay

Alex G
