Fruits Basket 2x25 Reaction Extended (YT version link below)

Comments

The Kureno Uotani stuff really still weirds me out since the age gap is more than just little but I still love Kureno's character

Nick

I recall when I got to this scene in the manga my first thought was “is this why Akito is so horrible to the females?” And then I learned more… lol.

Alicia Martinez

Omg I love your reactions Alex! I’ve been looking forward to this episode and soon all of the chaos in season 3 hehe! Remember when we all thought Fruits Basket was just a romance anime where the characters turned into animals!

Stephanie

Natsume is a great series. It's a shame that more people haven't heard of it.

Merfhew

The name of the final Ending Song is Glorious Spring. Spring will come!

ArmdVctr

I was hoping you could add Natsume Yuujinchou to your anime reaction list. Its not a very well known show but is my favorite. It would be nice to see your views and philosophical commenetary on it as it is a comforting yet tragic show with many lessons I wish to better understand.

Anya Mcghee

Season 3 ED evolves per episode though

ArmdVctr

I'm excited for a certain character design reveal in the new opening...if you know you know.

benj

I’m excited for your reaction to the season 3 opening! Pleasure by WARPs UP caught me off guard at first bc of how different it is, but it ended up being my favorite furuba op. I’m so glad you fell in love with Eden and HOME too!

Katrina Vieira

Season 3 is just a complete rollercoaster. I can't wait.

Ietseatapples

That was actually a weird decision made by the people who subtitled the show. Akito uses "boku' to refer to herself, which is masculine. And in the manga translations, they always used he/him from the beginning. So it was kinda odd to see them not using any pronouns. In fact, many people were more shocked that they were supposed to think Akito was a guy this whole time, because they assumed she was female.

Ietseatapples

I wasn't spoiled per se but I assumed Akito was non-binary based on how I noticed no one ever really used pronouns for her. Also she never really seemed like a guy to me, part of that was the voice though.

Emma Root

I wish this and season 3 first episode were then end of this season. It would have been so bitter sweet while getting us inside Akito's mind. Granted, we already have some stuff to work on. Akito is a child who never grow due to some trauma. She was placed as this god figure since birth. She couldn't escape it, like the others. As Tohru stated in the beach arc, the curse bound Akito too. When you're taugh everyone was waiting for you, that you can do whatever you want, of course you wouldn't know how to deal with troubles. We know Akito was always sad and demanding Shigure's attention. And, as Yuki put it, one day, she snapped. I guess it must be the breaking of Kureno's curse. By that point, Akiyo was full of "i'm not useless, i'm the chosen one"... What happen to Kureno is proff that it's not true. It's the implosion of her whole world. And she took it on others, because it's the only way she know how to process those thought. What i like about Shigure is pointing the fact that people enabled her to act that way. Kureno, who was too shocked to leave a poor child sobbing. Especially since, with Hatori, Ayame and Shigure being the oldest, he has a better grasp of the situation than the younger ones. And we still don't know who are Akito's parents, if they're around. She may have raised by the maids, who were there to serve her, not to tell her what she couldn't do. Truth is, Akito too grew up in a very toxic environment, and I have to keep quiet until season 3 begin. But yeah, ut's for all these things that i love Akito's character, who's truly fascinating.

Evalone

getting spoiled all those years ago somehow that akito is female (its fuzzy idr if it was like akito is female in the manga but male in the original or something) but i already knew this lil plot twist Ur reaction tho: perfect, spot on i had no idea they were going to reveal this when i first watched it so i was shocked despite already knowing XD also kureno??? excuse me??? u made me cry??? omg??? i don't even remember if i cried the first time but this time? blubbering mess

Brimmy

isn't it when they die that the next gen of animal is born???

Brimmy

Now we know why she's so harsh to female zodiacs and female significant others like Kana.

ArmdVctr

Oh the final season is PACKED lol. So much has to happen for the show to resolve. I'm impressed how sometimes your idle guesses are spot on just from picking up the small details.

Rachel Keys

I know you like watching the OP and ED but I suggest skipping them for season 3. Both have spoilers. Especially the ED.

Kimberly Oblinger

And now, season 3. The season where every. single. episode made me a crying, emotional wreck week after week. You mentioned that you don't think you're ready for whatever Tohru has coming her way in season 3. Godspeed my friend. It's a PACKED thirteen episodes. Oh yeah! Season 3 is only 13 episodes lol

Geneva The Weeba

A collection of excellent Goodwin quotes this episode: "Bring that *crotch*" "Talk; i.e. scheme" "How does she get anywhere? She just can't....Walk." "Do-Dooon't turn on the computer. Do NOT turn on the computer. Unless you like excellent plays." "I don't think he can do both. Don't think Uo-chan would be into that," "Maybe it's not soup after all. Or is it?"

Geneva The Weeba

I’m so glad you didn’t get spoiled on akito’s gender. So many manga readers just decided to straight up spoil it all the time for some reason. And then a weirdly high number of anime only fans broke rule number one of a series a looked up info about akito and got spoiled that way and then so many of them just also started blatantly spoiling it openly it was insane and really upsetting.

Mortis

What an awesome season finale! Honestly, during my first watch of the show I was also spoiled due to my curious nature of googling my questions. I read that Akito was a girl in the first season, but luckily for me I was so enraptured by the story that I completely forgot and was able to actually be surprised by the reveal lol Also the fact that Kureno's curse was broken already makes so much sense when watching it back. The fact that Akito kept him on such a short leash and kept him away from the other zodiac members really revealed a lot. Looking forward to the final season!!!!

Athena

Ahh, finally I don't have to tiptoe around mentioning Akito in these comments. Now, we know many, many things. The curse/bond can break. Kureno made a promise - probably a bad one but he's sticking to it. I'm pretty certain that Kureno's bond breaking is when Akito went dark and started really torturing Yuki (he said Akito just changed one day - the "paint it black" day). Shigure has been hinting and hinting - he wants to be Akito's number 1. Knowing Akito's a woman and sleeping with Kureno (actually sleeping and more), some of his more cryptic statements become a little clearer. If the bonds are all broken, Akito won't be able to say, "You're all mine and I can do whatever I want with whomever I want." Now we can also see some of why Akito said she hates women and why the other female zodiac members are treated so poorly - she's likely jealous and thinks romantic love (rather than the god-bond) is a threat to their connection. How dare Rin "seduce" Haru! And Kisa is trying to take Hiro. And Hatori loved Kana. All those women/girls paid a steep price (the glass price). What I wonder about is why Akito didn't care about Kagura and Kyo. Either it's because Kyo is a monster and he's gonna be locked up anyway, or Akito sensed Kyo didn't return Kagura's affections so it didn't matter. But, even if he's a monster and not one of the special 12, Kyo is still connected by the bond, still technically belongs to Akito. We also got to see that Akito felt the bond break instantly - it's not just a one-sided thing. And it terrified and hurt her and is most likely the cause of all her lashing out. She can't admit or talk about it to anyone or risk exposing everything. She has a huge weakness and only Kureno keeping his promise keeps everything from crumbling around her. Now, she has to channel her fear into anger, test the strength of the other bonds constantly to make sure they stay under her control, manipulate them in any way she can - tame them, break their wills, discipline them so they won't dare leave. But all she's accomplishing with these tactics is to make them hate, fear, and resent her and the bond that is supposed to be this happy, comforting thing for all of them.

Serralinda

And there it is the big twist. Having rewatched the seris a few times there are quite a number of clues.

Jacob Keyser

That's a really great way of putting it. I'm still thinking about this episode and their relationship and there's so much to it...

Alex G

lmao

Alex G

Happy holidays to you as well!

Alex G

Akito has been so well done, just about every scene she's in is thrilling and that's tough to pull off. She's this commanding and terrifying figure and yet is so vulnerable herself, and to me it feels real. There's a lot I want to say about Akito that I will save for later episodes.

Alex G

I was looking at the image in the mirror and knowing what I was seeing but it just wasn't computing. It's weird to have video footage of myself short circuiting

Alex G

Yeah Akito is just a little too human, and so I think in keeping with the themes of the show as they relate to humanity, self discovery, relationships, and separating from the past, it makes sense that they would want to break the curse. If Akito were a little more "God like" then I could see there being a case for there being a tie to something more fundamental that might not be such a bad thing. For example we are all sort of "slaves" to a certain degree, not to our impulses necessarily but just to the fact that we have them. There are certain internal mechanisms we are born with that push and pull us and that are bigger than us, and there can be beauty in connecting with that. There's also the theme of connection to nature that would seem to be possible with the animals. But ultimately what Akito feels more like is a toxic relationship.

Alex G

Kureno is basically the worst case scenario of how Tohru’s life could’ve turned out if she hadn’t learned how to defend herself and make her own choices. They’re both examples of the “Foolish Travelers” from the Momiji children’s story episode a while back. I empathize heavily with Kureno, I’m really rooting for him and Uotani.

benj

Just a note; both Tohru and Akito are gender neutral names. Both boys and girls can have names like that.

ArmdVctr

I had been spoiled about Akito being a woman and Kureno transforming not into a rooster but a sparrow… but during the scene of the rope breaking before the opening and realizing what was going on, my jaw hit the floor.

Andrea Rodríguez

Yes! He tells her she needs to stop, basically giving an order to the god and Akito doesn’t lash out even more, insulted that someone is bossing her around. I think on the scene with Kyo during the beach arc she throws a fit because she can’t be ordered around by any of the zodiacs.

Andrea Rodríguez

Ah this was so fun! As always your reactions are the best and I look forward to them every tues/thurs. (You're delayed reaction to Akito's true gender was super funny lol). There's so much in store for you in S3. Can't wait for you to uncover more of the Sohma Family drama!!!

Ray

Now that you know about Kureno, I want to hearken back to the last episode when Akito hit Yuki with the glass. It didn't occur to me until much, much later after I first read the manga that Kureno was the only one to react to that moment, because he's the only one not magically tethered by the curse. The other zodiac members could only watch in shock while Akito attacked Yuki, but Kureno was able to hold her back from doing any more damage. I think that was a small clue that Kureno isn't bound to the same rules as everyone else. I love how subtle it is, but it's there!

Alyssa Callahan

Fruba S1- introduction and characters S2- the plot, the drama, the beach arc S3- the amazing Climax 🙂🥲🙂🥲

raesh

My reaction to the Akito reveal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbvUxkIrT94

benj

Got it, that explains all the focus on sparrows

Alex G

Ooooh this is so interesting.. i never thought about this and now i'm going to think about this for the rest of the night hmm

Crystalrose

Yeah that is really impressive

Alex G

At first, I was like what if a rooster was born in those ensuing years when they were trying to pretend Kuruno was still the rooster but rewatching I think I answered my own question. The curse broke for the Rooster not just Kuruno, the whole line of would-be roosters.

CRS

I think part of kureno's thought process of staying with akito is also a sort of survivors guilt.. (does this make sense?) Like he feels bad that the other members aren't free like he is and so he will stay by akito's side because he feels like a terrible person if he left them all behind. I'm so glad you enjoyed this season! It was a really thrilling journey and there are already a lot of satisfying things happening... i can't wait for the next season reactions😍 (just as a side note.. happy holidays! I hope you have a great weekend!)

Crystalrose

I’m so impressed with how Akita’s character subvert expectations, at least for me. When Akito was first introduced I thought she was going to be your typical scheming and power hungry villain. Even though I knew she was a women from almost the beginning (I googled it as soon as we were introduced to Akito, which was dumb I know) I thought her character was more calculating and controlled. So it was a real surprise to me when we started to see how irrational and erratic her emotions were. How driven by fear and also how young she was. Akito was nothing like the villain archetype I thought and the first two season did a great job of revealing it slowly. Obviously Akito’s actions are still horrible but I find myself somewhat sympathetic to her.

Megan

Uo said that Koreno reminds her of Touru. This is the moment when we realize why. It wasnt just the ditzyness. Who else is as self less almost to the detriment of themselves. It begs the question of would Touru do the same if she was in Koreno's shoes.

Lysieblu

The thing that gets me is that she also voices Luffy from One Piece 😂

Geneva The Weeba

The amount of time it took for that bomb-shell at the end to hit you. This was such a huge moment in the manga for me. I can't wait for you to start delving into season 3!!!!!!!!

KuroNekoMataXIII

It’s really the fandoms worst kept secret. I was pleasantly surprised that Goodwin wasn’t spoiled .

Megan

I don't know if I agree with you that the curse would be better if there was just a better God. I mean, they can't hug anyone outside of the zodiacs of the opposite gender, and they will wouldn't have free will. Even if the God was nice, they'd still never truly be able to live a free life

Francesca White

It was much more of a reveal in the manga where we don't get to hear Akito's voice at all

Francesca White

Fun fact: almost EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE was spoiled that Akito is a girl, it was actually a miracle that you weren't lol

Francesca White

So it's never explicitly shown in the anime, but Kureno actually turns into a sparrow, not a rooster, kind of like Hatori turning into a seahorse. There is a theory for why this is that I can explain after we finish season 3 lol. But yeah it works much better for him, he's literally a bird trapped in a cage, much in the same way Yuki was a rat in a cage.

Francesca White

Yo, uh SHOUTOUT TO THE WRITING TEAM FOR HAVING LITERALLY NO ONE (but Tohru, a couple times) REFER TO AKITO WITH *ANY* GENDERED TERMS FOR 2 WHOLE SEASONS AND KEEPING THE DIALOGUE SOUNDING NATURAL AND NON - FORCED THE ENTIRE TIME.

Geneva The Weeba

This for me, was the most underwhelming season finale of fruits basket. I knew Akito was a girl from the beginning, but I didn't actually realize that I was meant to see her as a man AT ALL. after Tohru meets Akito for the first time in season 1, she starts calling her 'he'. I was just thinking, "oh, Tohru. This'll make for an embarrassed/baffled/fervently apologizing moment later on, and we'll all laugh." So when all the dramatic music swells, and the  camera starts panning, and Kureno chokes out "little girl", my reaction was "yeah. Obviously??? Is that it? Season's OVER? what was that?" And now, of course, I join in the 'akito's true gender' hazing with passion!

Geneva The Weeba

“what’s that look in your eyes” always gives me chills, especially when you realize akito said the same thing to yuki last episode! this is such a big episode, i still remember how empty i felt inside when it came out lmao

lineth pizarro

Since it's now been revealed that Akito is a woman guess it's a good time to say that she has the same VA as Hawkeye from fmab and momo from MHA. Even though Akito has become very adept at manipulation, her pleading with Kureno not to leave felt very genuine and like a real turning point. It was the first time she realised that the promised eternal bonds were not so eternal after all leading to her clinging to the rest of the zodiac more tightly and punishing any sign of abandonment or independence more harshly
