Yuki is so inspiring, out of all the characters his development was my favorite! Tohru and the others gave him the reassurance and acceptance he needed but his desire to live was what I admired so much!

Stephanie

That old lady maid always stands out to me! It does seem like a generally awful place to live even without any contact with Akito. It just feels like you'd always be watched and judged, and that people are all sort of ranking each other based on their connection to Akito.

Alex G

Definitely, I remember so clearly how bleak things felt at certain points as a kid. There is just no way to have that kind of perspective on time or change, so whatever things were at that time just felt permanent to me.

Alex G

Alex G

@Geneva I read that in Shigaraki's dub voice and it was hilarious lmao

benj

"and bang Yuki's new mom" Sometimes I feel like Yuki is yelling telepathically at Kyo in every Tohru interaction "Go, you scummy cat. Go become a man worthy of being my stepdad!!"

Geneva The Weeba

This episode made me cry again on rewatch, even with the dub. Yuki just wants to be friends with popular guy Kyo...Sad. Kyo just wants to not be imprisoned forever and bang Yuki's new mom...Sad. Will we get a happy ending?

benj

i love this omg

Brimmy

Something to mention is that Yuki's name means snow, but it's written with the characters "reason" and "hope". Tohru was Yuki's reason to want to keep living, because she let Yuki become her reason to hope. Yuki's month is in the middle of winter and in the ending theme, he is the only one surrounded by snow. Gardening is meaningful to him, and poetic in symbolism, because despite being surrounded by cold, he is still able to patiently care for and raise his seedlings, giving them life and letting them flourish against all odds.

Onigiri

The creator apparently mentioned on Twitter that Yuki's father "has abandoned everything and isn’t often present in family life", though I can't find the original tweet and thus can't vouch for the exact meaning of that translation. I wonder if he's the one who took the role of "parent who rejects their zodiac child" this time.

Onigiri

Indifferent Ayame gives me chills.

ArmdVctr

Now if only Yuki can become someone's light of hope the same way Tohru was to him..... I wonder..

ArmdVctr

Aw man i'm late to the yuki backstory of fucked upness that akito shoved on him but Yuki had it correct when he was explaining how he felt seeing Akito its both hate and love and that they all feel towards akito that push and pull....omg are they all just yin and yang with akito?! "What went wrong with akito" oh ya know....just some stuff....season 3 stuff.... Because i was anime only \younger me didn't like manga cuz i would eat up whatever i was reading\ i didn't know how much trauma the anime fruits basket was...till this season...that's when i started finding Furuba posts saying that this anime is about Found Family which when i was little i thought my family was awesome so i don't think i would of appreciated the manga like i was supposed to if i had read it back then but god poor Yuki :( and now we have \h a l f\ of the hat backstory Curse upload? yeah it didn't want akito's dirty laundry to be aired XD

Brimmy

Unfortunately Akito wasn’t lying when he told Yuki that Haru hates him. Back then Haru actually did hate Yuki before he actually met him. The maids and adults used to laugh at him because the ox was ‘stupid’ and that in turn must make Haru stupid. Since the rat tricked the ox, Haru came to the conclusion that it was yuki’s fault. In haru’s introduction episode he talks about how he screamed at Yuki and let all his frustrations out, and the kindness that Yuki showed him was what made him realize he was wrong.

Kimberly Oblinger

Sometimes I feel like the most toxic people in the Sohma estate are the maids....(most of the parents are terrible too of course) Like they re constantly perpetuating who is more valuable among the Sohma, and projecting their ridiculous ideas onto all the members of the Sohma family (especially Akito). Specifically that old hag maid.

Kathleen Powell

We see a lot of Yuki's mother in his back story and main story, probably to contrast against Tohru, but I wonder about Yuki's father. I don't think we ever hear anything about his father. Was he just passive during everything Yuki went through? Was it just the mom who went so hard on pupeteerinYuki's life? It would have been cool to see some of that dynamic

Brooklyn Doreen

I’ve loved this fact ever since I heard it. I just think it’s really cool to have a series where you think it’s a love triangle, and then over time it becomes clear it’s instead about building two equally loving relationships, one romantic and one platonic.

cosmotron

Here for your voice actor facts, young Akito is played by Trina Nishimura who also lends her voice to Mikasa from AOT, Lan Fan from FMAB, and Kyoka Jiro from MHA.

BotheredAsh

When I hear people say Furuba characters aren't suicidal, I feel like we didn't experiment the same story. I have the feeling Yuki is the one who has the most growth in the entire show. He came from so far, with no one to depend on... Isuzu, Kyo or even Tohru had these people around them. Yuki was alone in the dark. And, as much as Akito's words and actions are horrible, he is right. No one cared about Yuki. People hated him. Kyo did say he would kill Yuki, we saw that from his point of view back in season 1. Haru did hate him for being the rat, he told it to Tohru himself. It's by meeting him, probably after Yuki met Tohru, that his view on him changed. Ayame didn't care about him, he admit it himself to Tohru. From the beggining, we were lead to believe Yuki was the bad guy, because that's the story on the zodiac. So yeah, Kyo had his reasons for acting that way. Doesn't change the fact he attacked first. How surprising Yuki's answer was the same... And yeah, that's what Yuki felt for Tohru this whole time. She truly is a mother to him, not a potential love interest. That's why their relationship is so beautiful, and why it's essential to this story. Without these two, Furuba wouldn't exist. That's why, in my book, Kyo isn't the main character. He's an important one, but not as interesting for me. As for Akito, we have some glimpse of his psychology. For all he's done wrong, he was still a child at this point. I want to blame the adults for what happened to Yuki, more than Akito. Tohru said it : the curse bind Akito as much as the other zodiac. This is a child that tries to convince himself he's needed, that everyone was waiting for him. The fear he placed on Yuki are what he's scared for himself. And Akito is suffering too, just like the other. A good vilain is one you can understand or empathize with, for me. Akito is one of the masterpiece of this series, and a favorite of mine. Can't wait for you to discover more on this character.

Evalone

yuki is one of the strongest characters to be honest, i love how this episode shows you all the dark things that happened to him yet he insists on being hopeful!! also there’s nothing more frustrating that that scene where yuki and kyo finally meet lmao because you understand where they’re both coming from but you don’t want them to hurt eachother. they would’ve been powerful if they became friends in the beginning, but that would also take away the complicated thing that is their relationship

lineth pizarro

Baby yuki contemplating not existing so he can be "useful to others" is so terrible, my heart breaks every time:( And i agree that tohru didn't solve all of his problems but she was a reminder to him that life could be good and you can still find happiness. It also reminds me of Kazuma telling kyo that even when you are in complete despair hope blooms again whether we want it to or not.. its just our instinct to want to hope for a better future or happy moments in life. And i think what matters is what you do with that hope.. do you act on it and keep pushing forward or do you let the negative engulf you... I think like you said as you age it becomes easier to jump those hurdles in life but when you are younger everything feels extreme because it's the first time you are experiencing anything. But before i make some long paragraph about the things you already talked about i just want to say i'm soooo so proud of Yuki. He has grown so much and he's my inspiration ❤️

Crystalrose

Natsuki Takaya has said that the reveal of how Yuki feels towards Tohru was the idea that inspired the entire story of Fruits Basket for her.

Ietseatapples

Seriously. I'm tearing up all over again. This series hits so hard every time.

arcana✦vox

Wow that's a brilliant detail holy shit

Nick

Like two episodes ago he said "Motherly love?" as one of his guesses for what Yuki felt towards Tohru and he hit it on the head with pretty much all of the guesses It's truly impressive and makes this series a blast

Nick

Season 2 really is the Yuki season, and he's unfortunately SUCH an underrated character despite all of his almost ENTIRELY self-driven improvement. To do it yourself: ALL BY YOURSELF is ridiculously admirable. He literally had no one. The *only* person he had regular contact with was Akito, who, obviously, did NOT help. My gosh Yuki. Good job. I'm so proud.

Geneva The Weeba

Oh man, this one gets me. And one thing I learned later as an adult is just how bleak life can seem when you're that young. Aside from time progressing slower, you just feel powerless. As an adult I have an amazing luxury to remove myself from situations I am not comfortable with. As a kid though, I couldn't do that.

KuroNekoMataXIII

Honestly I figured it wasn't going to sail at some point early this season, when Kyo admitted to himself that he loved her. Because at that point, Kyo was about 5 parallel dimension chess moves ahead of Yuki

Nick

I WAS LITERALLY GOING TO COMMENT THIS OMG 😲

Francesca White

This episode really confirmed how awesome yuki is as a character and when Yuki revealed he just wanted Kyo to like him and be his friend just broke my heart. Also, the confirmation of Yuki's feelings toward Tohru was fun to see

Amber

Ah my tears~ the older I get, the more I am in awe of Yuki’s inner strength, especially because I study early childhood development. He could of easily grown to be more like Akito or something worse, but instead he’s an incredibly self-aware and sweet kid who just does his absolute best to give his life a shot. I just love it more and more!

Fabiola Macias

Young Akito reminds me a lot of young Azula. Clearly the emotion issues and destructive behaviors began young but for whatever reason they where caused/reinforced/ignored by the poeple and environment surrounding them.

Megan

This is basically the chapter/episode that put the final nail in the coffin of Tohru Yuki shipping.

ArmdVctr

thoughtbubble is a YT channel that did a few videos on flower symbolism in Fruits basket...

raesh

There is a lot of Flower Symbolism in Fruits Basket. You should watch Thoughtbubble for explanation for Hanakotoba

ArmdVctr

So I just noticed the repeated focus on the red flowers in that dark room in the first half of the episode. Anybody have any theories on what that's supposed to mean? I'm only a few episodes ahead of this one, so no spoilers if it's connected to something later.

jdthebud

you can always tell how much a reactor pays attention to the show by seeing how they react to Yuki seeing Tohru as a mother. if they're like "i guessed that" or like "wow that makes sense" you know they're in deep, but if they're like "WTF I THOUGHT HE WAS IN LOVE WITH HER?!?!? THIS IS SO WEIRD" then they may not have paid as much attention to the subtext lol. there's actually a lot of hints at Yuki seeing her that way, from him staring longingly at her while she tucks in Hiro, Kisa, and Momiji at the beach house like a mother would, to him being jealous of Kisa and wanting to lean on her shoulder, to a lot of other stuff lol

Francesca White

And now it is revealed that Yuki thinks of Tohru as a mother figure. Again, I'm not crying, there's just glass in my eye.

Athena

Yuki’s backstory really is painful to watch even though it’s such good writing. You just feel so bad for him and how he was treated.

Mortis

Also if we go back to S1 when tohru tells this story..its shown in warm colors...since this was a cherished memory for her But when yuki remembers it..its bleak gray early morning dawn... Tells us how much our feelings color our memories...

raesh

Yuki overexerted himself so much for Tohru's sake that he turned into the rat😭

Athena

If that hat could tell a story...🥲🥲🥲

raesh

EST gang. It’s winter break for me so being up at 2am isn’t a big deal or even unusual

Megan

Where my late night EST American gang at. The Fruits Basket Goodwin reaction series grind doesn't stop. Tohru being jesus at 2am hits different, trust me.

benj

Wow, that's right. Forgot all about that.

jdthebud

I thought your shirt pocket was a QR code lol pls scoot back next time so I can scan it

Athena

For me the biggest surprise was how young Akito was. I didn’t think he was that old but seeing how close him and yuki are in age threw me for a loop. I believe Akito is in his earlier 20 now (please correct me if i’m wrong)

Megan

just a quick clarification: at the point in the story where Akito said Haru hated Yuki, it was actually true. Haru hated him because he thought it was his fault everyone thought he was stupid. however, later on he talked to Yuki and Yuki became the first person he fell in love with

Francesca White

Haha I had the same thought. It's a good fit

Alex G

the crazy thing is it was revealed in episode 2 that Yuki's friends got their memories erased, and here we finally get the full story

Francesca White

The auto thumbnail really illustrates the pain after finally getting this uploaded I imagine Will update after watching as usual

Nick

yayyy i'm glad you were able to get it up, thanks for the hard work! also i haven't seen the reaction yet but i'd just like to say when i first read the manga one of the most interesting revelations of this episode was that Akito used to be just like a normal kid, then one day he just snapped for some reason
