There's literally so many people in the world and that's the relationship that forms? idk like I said I just don't like it very much, if you enjoy them then good for you lol in real life, I'm sure a lot of people would agree it's weird if something similar happened even tho we don't have the same mind erasing abilities the same premise can be compared, and it just rubbed me wrong. So, it is just my opinion on the relationship.

Amber

A big theme of Fruit Basket is stagnation vs change. Kana has moved on with her life, so do Hatori and Mayu have to bear that pain forever?

BirthdayParty

idk it just doesnt sit right with me about the idea of mayu and hatori being together when she was clearly close with kana, its just kinda wack lol

Amber

Something that I've been thinking more about since revisiting this series with the discussions, is I think this show does a great job at showing how self sacrifice is not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not exactly the right thing either. Kyo pushing Tohru away after his form is revealed, Hatori being content with having memories of a lost love, and even Tohru to some extent with all her selfless actions. These are all things that benefit other people, at cost to themselves. Tohru at least has the benefit of either being able to enjoy things with people or having them chide and encourage her to express and do things she wants to. These self sacrificing moments seem like the selfless right thing to do, but it comes at great cost and detriment to themselves, as well as in unknown ways to others. Kyo pushing Tohru away would have spared her in his mind, but would have doomed himself to painful isolation. And in a way also doomed Tohru, forcing her to live with regret at not being able to help Kyo if she had left like he wanted. The detriments are more apparent with Hatori and Kana. Where Tohru pushed through and came to Kyo's rescue, there is no moment like that for Hatori. His story plays out in full self sacrifice, and because of the time that has passed, there is no getting it back. And while he may be satisfied with it, the characters around him are not. Because it wasn't necessarily the right thing to do. Hatori had his hand forced by Ahkito and Kana's declining health due to her mental state. But who's to say things couldn't have improved with time? Or why couldn't Hatori erase the memory of the accident, and keep the memories of the relationship until Kana was mentally ready to remember the glass incident? He made the choice he thought was best at the cost of his own happiness, but ultimately ignored his own wants and robbed Kana of something vital by taking those memories. It's bittersweet tragedy. Kana's health improved and she got to meet and be happy with someone else, much to Hatori's relief and joy. But they both still suffer in a way, Kana by never knowing, and Hatori by being forced to remember. This isnt a good outcome. There is still pain inflicted on the person that the sacrifice is for, but it is an acceptable one in the eyes of the person giving up more. And they most likely will not even see or realize the pain it causes. But the show doesn't accept these outcomes. While there is no rewriting the past, Tohru insists good things will always come around to Hatori, and his friends push him towards happiness that he's given up on. Both the show and characters aren't satisfied with the way his story played out, and are insisting on him having a better ending that doesn't play into self sacrifice. Which is also what makes Shigure so interesting in a way. While others are trying to self sacrifice for the sake of other people and not admitting what they want, Shigure fully knows what he wants. He'll even cause detriment to others if it will lead him to what he wants. So Shigure could be seen as the other extreme opposed to self sacrifice. So it's interesting that he's the one pushing Mayu and Hatori together, almost as if he's retroactively opposing Hatori's self sacrifice of giving up on love. So I'm wondering if future episodes will play into that theme. And characters that take those self sacrificing actions will be pushed away from them into a better alternative, because it's not actually as helpful as they may think. Whoa this is so long! I'm so sorry! I just really got caught up in this idea and how to express it. I joined the patreon to keep these Fruit Basket reactions, so I thought I'd contribute to the discussion. Hope it makes some sense! Lol

HorrorSkit

After watching the entire series, I'd say this moment was the weakest part of the dub. Most likely just poor/misguided direction, as there are other good crying moments in this series. Regardless I will swear by this dub and all the efforts they put into it

HorrorSkit

I think there's something really beautiful about being able to cry for another person. To feel so connected to someone else that you swell with emotion for their sake. It's a level of compassion I think is rarely seen

HorrorSkit

Yeah I agree. Momiji has been my favorite character of season 2 so far, and I think the dub improving really helped me focus more on his character and not the weird voice, haha.

jdthebud

Holy shit that crying is horrible πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I couldn’t stop laughing, its not too late to switch to the sub Goodwin! Overall this dub is alright but man oh man was this episode lowkey ruined by it.

benj

Lol Fruits Basket actually ends with Shigure and Tohru getting married in a polygamous relationship with Kyo and Yuki.

benj

What kind of girl can handle Shigure? The answer may surprise you lmao

Rachel Keys

While watching this episode back with you it really seems like Mayu has a good read on Shigure. Not when it came to that, "Hatori has a girlfriend," line but she still handled him in her own way that made it seem like she knew her way around his ploys.

Athena

I'd say he's more chaotic neutral since 99% of the time he's doing things for his own selfish reasons, he does care about others, just not as much as he cares about himself, so even if he cares for them in the end he's willing to use them

Francesca White

Heck MAYU OMG \that speech of what she loves about tori hit harder in english\ Oh Kana is voiced by Kara Edwards no wonder she sounded familiar she voiced Videl and Goten in DBZ/DBS and a bunch of other characters in other animu XD "I was wondering what kind of girl could handle Shigure" omggggg Why is this season SO LONG there's so much omg i'm so excited

Brimmy

Exactly

benj

Shigure is just Chaotic Good

Scoola

@A Goodwin I can't remember the exact line, but it was after Hatori said that he'll basically never fall in love or be happy again, and we get narration of Shigure saying "you never know, there might be someone out there" or something along those lines as it pans to Mayu

Francesca White

Watch Season 1 E7 again. You will se Mayu with Kana in the ending. So when Hari and Tohru were talking about when Spring comes, Mayu was right there.

ArmdVctr

Everyone kept saying the dub for this show got exponentially better each season and that seems to be the case so far. Makes me happy

Nick

Yeah Momiji has actually been killing it in dub lately. The episode where he stood up to Akito for example? Amazing

Nick

@A Goodwin TV If I remember correctly Shigure directly hinted at Hatori that he might cross paths with her. The sly dog was plotting for a while

Nick

Haha yeah this was one of the only moments in the dub so far where the acting was noticeable to me (the other being Momiji's early scenes) but still a good scene

Alex G

Totally missed it! What was the hint? A picture with the three of them?

Alex G

While the crying was awkward, I do like the message of just needing a good, unrestrained cry sometimes, even as an adult

Francesca White

Fun fact, in episode 15 when it's first told that Mayu dated Shigure, the very end of the episode hints that she'll get with Hatori, but I think you missed that part and it was funny to see you think it was gonna be a Shigure romance lol

Francesca White

theres actually a lot of similarities between Mayu and Tohru. Both of them really take on other people's pain and make it their own.. in an attempt to deal with their own pain/loneliness. I kinda get the feeling that she felt as though she had to mourn for Kana, since Kana had all her memories erased.

Ietseatapples

Glass jokes are always welcome here

Alex G

Ooo She's into Harry! That's Juicy!! Said every viewer who saw this episode....lmao!!🀣🀣

raesh

Mayu: their relationship shattered. Me: would you say… like glass? I’ll let myself out.

Kimberly Oblinger

Kyo turning into to Charizard in the outro is hilarious.

Megan

I love the outro lol

Aaron Ong

He is a sly dog. I'm not convinced there isn't SOME other simultaneous motive here, but it does seem like he's looking out for Hatori here ultimately. One thing I'm still not clear on is how the curse affects Kana. The way the curse has been discussed in the show recently, it's the connection between God Akito and the Zodiac animals. Would this be able to affect Kana in a supernatural way? I'm not sure.

Alex G

I've. had this comment written for a while: Mayuko did the same thing Hatori did. Wanted Kana to be happy so neither of them interfered, it was just in different contexts. She wanted to be with Hatori. Once Akito hurt Kana and she had her memories changed, Hatori wanted her to be happy so he didn't interfere in her new relationship. Also, considering we now know Akito has literal control over people, Hatori wiping Kana's memories really does seem like it was the right move in my opinion. In this episode we saw that she wasn't just unwell, but acting like she was under control almost like told it was all her fault and had to believe that. Not just a mental break but something to do with Akito. Also, Shigure kinda set this up to happen in a way. I'm conflicted on him, but I think he did good here, there wasn't an ulterior motive, he just wanted Hatori and Mayuko to be happy knowing their history. +1 for Shigure Someone on crunchyroll's comments for this episode called Shigure a literal sly dog and that's the best description of him.
