Fruits Basket 2x5 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

Yeah I think there is definitely a lot of room for things to go wrong but the fact that there is danger and bad actors does not necessarily mean that EVERY relationship of that nature is wrong. It really depends on the specifics of the individual IMHO

Alex G

That explains a lot haha. I don't know about Summer being spooky but I DO get a weird feeling at every change of season. It's always slightly unsettling to me

Alex G

It's a thing of beauty

Alex G

Another great episode - about the age gap - I understand why some people may be bothered by it, but as other commenters have said there is nothing malicious about their interactions and Kureno does not come across as the “grooming” type. I’ve been in a couple of similar situations myself and I still think 10 years later that I knew full well what I was doing and getting myself into- that applies to a big percentage of younger people dating others that are 9-10 years older than them. being young does not always equal being ignorant, not understanding “adult stuff” or being too vulnerable or easy to manipulate or groom. I just feel like every similar situation is labelled as grooming nowadays unfortunately due to exploitation of young people and horrible things that we hear about - but we need to accept that things are not always predatory or malicious in these types of relationships.

In Japan, summer is considered the spooky season, so Momiji bringing them to a haunted house was to celebrate the start of summer! Besides August being the month of Obon (holiday for welcoming deceased family members back home), telling scary stories will give the listeners the shivers, thus it's a traditional way to cool down. Soba is also a classic summer food because it's cold and refreshing, which is why Uo was so excited for it.

Onigiri

I get what you mean, Uo is very mature and can handle herself, but I think the issue is this is a series FOR teenage girls, they're the target audience. So it's dangerous to put an age gap relationship in it that's not portrayed as bad, cuz then the young people watching might go "hey, I'm mature too, I could be in a relationship like this"

Francesca White

That's correct, Laws are there to protect the most vulnerable not a blanket forbidding of a specific relationship.

ArmdVctr

First it was Eren. Now it is Age gaps. I love this community, you guys are awesome and the discussions I read from these sections are so informed and well articulated. It’s great to be able to find wisdom not only from Goodwin, but from everyone here as well

Aaron Ong

Yeah I think the circumstances are important. But I also get the utility of making generalizations in action or law about what is appropriate and inappropriate, since generally they are there to protect the most vulnerable. I'm interested to see how it goes with Uo-Chan

Alex G

No problem! I appreciate the discussion and that people feel comfortable expressing a range of opinions.

Alex G

Lol it did not disappoint

Alex G

I have so many good memories of convenience stores in Korea. In the summer there are plastic tables and chairs outside and I spent many a fond weekday night drinking beer and eating snacks with friends and coworkers.

Alex G

I think that Kureno has displayed no intention of manipulating, abusing, or doing anything malicious toward Uo. I feel like she knows herself can handle herself well. She's dealt with scummy men since she turned her dad sober and participating in a gang. I'm not trying to defend the age gap so much as trying to understand it as a legitimate relationship lens. If both parties are able to communicate their feelings, understand one another, and are not exercising toxic behavior, then I think they are responsible enough to make their own decisions and function as a couple. However, it would be a different story, in a different context that we just don't have here. If Kureno was trying to lure her and groom her then I'd have a HUGE problem, but that is not the case.

Athena

yes!!! the main mystery of fruba..which is the actual love triangle!!!!Lmao!!!

raesh

oh my god the age gap convo in the replies wow ok she'd need to finish school first and NOT be 17 but other than that age gaps are fine as long as ur not being a gross pedo

Brimmy

KURENO OMGGGGGGG holy crap we getting there o.o Hana is me XD Haru pls omg XD idk if this is funnier in english or not omg the food he ordered i never caught it the first time that's fricken amazing omg Oh oops hi fangirl they make my heart warm and fuzzy i love them <3 LMAO "is he a spy? or a robot...or an alien?" omg Alex XD omg ur so not ready for this season even tho i can't fricken remember most of it just the last couple of eps cuz plot o.o

Brimmy

there are a couple relationships that i'm not to keen on ut we can talk about those at a latter date

Jacob Keyser

yes omg i'm so excited!! this is truly where season 2 begins in my opinion

Francesca White

ok i've done enough arguing for the night lol, sorry if i got intense, but if i'm gonna be super passionate about anything, i'd say being anti predator is a good one lol

Francesca White

Correct 18 year olds aren't kids. They have agency and are becoming adults. We shouldn't infantalize them.

ArmdVctr

Fun episode to kick off the beginning of summer break for Tohru & friends! As other have mentioned, there is a bit of discourse over the KurenoxArisa age gap. I'm super excited for your reaction to the next episode. Similar to season 1, the episodes of season 2 so far have mostly been introductory. Setting up the characters... But imo I'd say that episode 6 is the start of the story arc in which Fruits Basket's plotline is truly set in motion. :))

Sweetbun

I don't really have any opinions on the age gap so I'm getting out the popcorn for this comment section lol

Emma Root

So my thoughts on the age gap. I don't really mind it. There are 10+ year age gaps all the time. Is it a little risky for a teenager to fall into that? Yes. But at 17 you have full body autonomy and I believe you are fully capable of making your own decisions. Anything that could be risky should have (even though it isn't done nearly enough) been taught or talked about. On a completely different note, Kureno's voice actor also voices Shoji in MHA.

BotheredAsh

if you need someone's parent's permission to date them they're too young for you dude, also again teenage girls aren't women, they are not adults

Francesca White

Also, in conservative asian countries dating and being in a relationship does not mean things get sexual. My experience is older men dating women in their late teens are usually chaperoned and have the approval of the parents. Usually they wait for the girl to graduate college before tying the knot.

ArmdVctr

The author of the fruits basket manga really is a wonderful writer who understands so much of the human condition, but she does have a weird quirk where she seems to like age gap relationships. I take it w/ a grain of salt tbh. With Kureno and Uo, im a bit more ok with it because he lacks life experiences, which makes the power dynamic more balanced. Its still not my favorite part of the series.

Ietseatapples

I studied abroad in Indonesia and I agree that Indomaret was the cornerstone of my experience

Emma Root

Also here in the Philippines where I live seeing 17-18 year olds dating 20+ is not unusual.

ArmdVctr

It's interesting to me because when I was 17 I was in a relationship with a woman older than Kureno. I have mixed feelings about it which I will probably expand on at some point haha

Alex G

I like how shocked you were. Very funny

Emman Reed

Not confirming or denying btw. It’s just funny how you said it.

Megan

Hanajima's little brother asking if she was lonely is a continuation of her character arc from her episodes. remember, she was jealous of Tohru getting taken away, and now Uo having a potential love interest. she had that whole talk with Kyoko about how even if they go their separate ways it'll be ok, etc. a lot of people miss this subtle character stuff for Hana

Francesca White

“Is Akito… his lover??” LMAOOOOO

Megan

yeah i love Fruits Basket but the age gaps make me so uncomfortable. even if it's legal in some places, 17 and 26 is just morally reprehensible, i'm 21 now and i can't even imagine getting with a 17 year old, let alone someone who's 26, their brain fully developed getting with one. the author of this series said she really liked age gap relationships, and all i can say is i hope now that she's older she's gotten over that. of course age gaps are fine when you're both fully matured adults, but it's never ok if one of you is a teen

Francesca White

I had a feeling. I'm interested to see discussions about it

Alex G

Kureno has a big age gap with Uo. It bothers some people
