How would you compare Scar and Zuko's villain to hero character delevopment? I've watched FMA:B so many times now over the years and honestly, Scar is one of the stand out characters for me after all this time. A character who by all means could have been consumed by the despair and tragedy of his life and while wrong the things he did to lash out are at least understandable. The fact that he never makes excuses for the wrongs that he has done and decides that in the end he will fight to be better, knowing that some people will still not accept his past, he keeps trying to be better. As someone who has been to dark places and tries to be a better person I find him a very inspiring character, which again does not excuse the bad he has done but doesn't allow it to define him as a whole and yet also does not dismiss it either, it becomes a part of him. Also were there any characters you wrote of at the start of the show and they surprised you? When I first watched the show I thought winry was just the token female character, but as the show went on and as the years pass I realise just how much emotional strength she has and how tenacious she is. It's not easy being the one to stay at home and watch others go off on there adventures. It would be easy for her to just stagnate and worry, but she realises that she too can grow and have a journey of her own whilst also being the rock that the brothers really need. Honestly I could gush about this show for hours. I'm on my phone so the formatting is really bad, I'll edit it when I get on my computer. Much love to you Goodwin, your reactions are so thought provoking and I've enjoyed watching your reaction to what is still one of my very favourites pieces of media I've seen to this day.

What are some relationships (of all kinds) that you enjoyed the most? The characters all stand on their own, but it is often the way they play off of each other that really makes them stand out. Obviously Ed and Al is very central (and a totally legitimate answer!) but there are a lot of great relationships in the series. Greedling, Roy and Riza, Scar and Mei, Hohenheim's evolving relationship with his sons, etc. For me I think it's not just the relationship between Ed and Al, but the trio that is Ed, Al, and Winry. It's why that moment of them reuniting hits as hard emotionally as it does. They feel like a true trio, where their interactions with each other are all different but all rooted in the same deep love and affection. It's never just Ed and Al, or Ed and Winry's relationship, but the three of them together that forms the emotional backbone of the story in my opinion.

What is your opinion on Bradley's wife torwards the end of the show when we learn despite her being frail in a way she is the kind of person to throw herself into danger to save Salem, Bradley says his wife is the only one who would understand and survive the sitution which she did wonderfully and even defied the wishes of the military and raised baby Saleem herself rather well proving she is indeed the women Bradley fell for when she slapped him

Most underrated character in the show? IMO it’s Trisha. I guess it makes sense because she doesn’t have much screen time, but I feel she is the one who helped Hohenheim get his humanity back the most.

What was your favorite scene/moment of the show? Fun tidbit: In episode 40 when the dwarf in the flask picks a name for Slave 23, his first choice is Theophrastus Bombastus before he settles on Van Hohenheim. This is a reference to Paracelsus who you might recognize as one of the pioneers of modern medicine and he also used to dabble in alchemy back when people thought that was a real thing. His full name was actually Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim.

I wanted to make a question, but I just wanna say that was really an honor to rewatch Fmab with you and know that you enjoyed it to its fullest just like me. Do you intend to watch the 2005 version? By the middle of it the show really changes since when the anime started the Manga was not finished and they just run with the show. I think is worth it even if you don't record your reaction to it. Even though I would love to see it.

Would you recommend any books or films with similar themes to FMA:B? The novel “The Alchemist” tells the tale of a Spanish boy who, following a prophetic dream, embarks on a journey for treasure, hoping in the process to find meaning in his life. In the end, he realizes that the treasure from his dream was actually buried in his hometown- Thus, the “meaning” he was searching for was “already within him”. It’s a stretch, but I can’t help but feel a similarity to Ed and Al’s long journey, especially when Ed realizes the limitations of alchemy and is content to live life “as a simple human”. I love your takes on philosophy and spiritualism, so any comments on the above or the show are appreciated! Thanks! :-)

The actual real life event Arakawa based the Ishvalan massacre on was the massacre of the Ainu people (the native population of Hokkaido) by settlers (the people we now call Japanese). She herself is a descendent of Ainu people and decided to use that part of the history of Japan as inspiration, as it is often overlooked.

You probably wont recognize how important she is until you rewatch the show (especially episode 27), but please say a word or two about Tricia's role in the story and her impact on her family.
