THE 2021 GRIFTIES!

Comments

I am so confused by the 'donuts every day are unhealthy' argument. Where does the 'every day' come from? Who's getting vaccinated every day? Are there people going to get their vaccination every day to incentivise a higher rate of doughnut eating? In which case, the doughnuts are the least of your worries.

Frances Serge

"BEARLY in the top ten"

Ximena Garcia Arceo

This may be a weird entry point, but it got my mum hooked on Maintenance Phase! I think it'll really help her, so thank you! Also, where's our Noom episode??? šŸ˜‚

Sonja Howard

Jona Hill praise has not aged well! Turns out he’s a pretty horrible man 🫤 Otherwise, a great episode!

Eliz

I've been having pretty severe bouts of depression lately and I just want y'all to know your podcast and patreon extras really help to brighten my days. I love your humor and ythe way you bounce off each other. I always appreciate that you're kind but tough and you know how to mock things in a way that's not cruel, just hilarious. Kudos all around. When I can afford it, I'll bump up my petreon subscription amount.

Lydthekidmaybenowmid

Did you ever do the episode on Noom?

Carol Palmer

Awwww, I quit girl scouts! Solidarity!

Elizabeth Gunn, sickly but cruel

I have only recently started using the word, and it feels wonderful. Takes the sting out. I'm reminded of a scene in Orange is the new black when someone calls "Big Boo" (played by the wonderful Lea Delaria) fat. She spins around and does the most fabulous takedown.

Julia

Besides basic joyful uplift, I get so many ideas for people to read, podcasts to hunt down, EXX CETERA, lol. Checking out celebrity memoir book club re O. Munn.

Julia

the most effective appetite suppressant,,, EATING! absolutely cackled, thank u

mushy peaches

Butt swallow the ozone.... I'm here at work in the middle of the night cry laughing as quietly as possible. Jesus y'all that was freaking hilarious

Heather Hawkes

The nifties!

Giscard Boulou

Noom is much More nefarious than just being a diet. The food that they suggest you eat, is not healthy. Their nutritionists are not credentialed. And (at least in 2019), the Studies that they use do not include the information they're quoting. Basically they ranged from misquoting information to making it up. I am also perplexed why they have an a plus rating on the Better Business Bureau despite having just a slew of one star reviews.

Nicole

Aubrey: ā€œTrying to make cauliflower into things that aren’t cauliflower..ā€ me: ā€œYES, FUCK OFF!ā€ šŸ˜†honestly it was barely ok in it’s natural form now people have gone and ruined a bunch of foods. PSA if you have IBS cauliflower isn’t good for you. Just eat rice šŸ˜†

Casey

I’m only now listening to this episode and was less than thrilled when y’all talked about some wacko smearing pee on himself while I was eating dinner šŸ˜‚

Casey

You aren’t missing out. I tried it, learned a few helpful things but otherwise it’s just forcing you to count calories.

Casey

MFP is such a trigger for me. I tried Noom and found it kind of helpful at first but then gave up on it. I had a few helpful takeaways but in the end I felt it to just be a calorie reduction diet with some basic CBT thrown in. My calorie target was at least realistic ish with Noom but it is basically MFP with lessons.

Casey

What did Sally Field do?! She starred in that horrid racist movie "not without my daughter" 🤣

Ronak Pahlevanlu

I'm back-listening, and I literally had to pause and take a minute at the ozone thing - I did research in college on air pollutants. Although ground-level ozone wasn't one of the ones I was focusing on, it's one of the main ones that people care about - the "big 6" air pollutants. The idea that people are just voluntarily using it as a """health""" thing is absurd to me.

Sam Ramsay

Where is the Noom episode? It's been almost a year and I feel I NEED to hear you two take on Noom and their super annoying ads!

Annalisa Castaldo

I know so many people have said this, but we NEED the noom ep!! My extremely restrictive eating disorder started when I downloaded myfitnesspal in 2013 & now that I am forced to watch noom ads all the fucking time on hulu I feel so devastated that noom is clearly the exact same shit repackaged in new aesthetics :(

Sydney Beal

Dang I'm listening and I'm glad I never tried Noom. I was very close to trying it once. Yes, I agree the advertising for Noom is super aggressive. Gosh I love you both so much! Thank you for the work you do. 🧔

Problematic Bestie

This episode was amazing! Thank you!

Jennifer Gilbert

The Griftys and the Niftys!!

Michelle Bach

YES! I'd love to hear your take on Noom. Please, please, please do one soon!

JB

Omg I would love a full break down of Gwyneth Paltrow and all of the doctors / wellness people she employes. We get it you don’t like gluten dairy eggs soy caffeine alcohol sugar nightshades shellfish or joy.

Sarah Anderson

I’m listening back to this in august of 2022 and WHERE IS THE NOOM EPISODEEEE

Vanessa

i literally laughed so fucking hard at "the solution is putting gas BACK IN the butt"

Gabby Finan

my mom is on optavia- an anorexia pyramid scheme- and im so glad it was nominated!!!

Amanda R

I don’t think I’ve ever related to something more strongly than Michael trying to name football players šŸ˜‚

Emily Herring

please do a full epi on noom soon, it’s such garbage and i get too angry about it to articulate my objections to anyone in my real life

LilliClare

LET KIDS QUIT ACTIVITIES THEY ARE NOT ENJOYING šŸ’„

Frances Mary

Re celebrities not bathing: what really offended a lot of folks was not how often these folks do or don’t bathe (who cares?) but the way they were casually flaunting privilege. Black, Brown and Indigenous folks feel tremendous pressure to be squeaky-clean all the time because of getting so much white supremacist shit around being ā€œdirty.ā€

Gracie Spicewood

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/11/28/brazil-acai-child-labor/

Gracie Spicewood

I was going to suggest the ā€œnifties,ā€ but I also like ā€œuplifties.ā€ Add to the reasons why aƧaĆ as a superfood is bullshit: it’s harvested with child labor. I’d like to see y’all do your take on Whole 30, another diet plan masquerading as a wellness reset.

Gracie Spicewood

Quitters unite! I also quit girls outs and many sports.

Olivia P

That colon cleanse thing sounds like getting prepared for a colonoscopy which you should only do under a doctor's prescription

maria ameral

Of course I listen to this one on public transit and laugh at it outloud.

Kirstin Swanson

Ozone is not something anyone should fuck with - I know people who have died from inhaling too much ozone.

Annie Collier

the ozone rectal thing was rumored to cure covid in Brazil among the far right. it was... deranged.

MarĆlia Ramos

Strong agree!

okay willis

The Grifties & The UPLIFTIES!

okay willis

Just thow away the whole doctor.

Deanna Anderson

Adaptogens certainly deserved that win. They're so inescapable now that my DOCTOR has just prescribed general adaptogens to me and suggested them as a replacement for my stimulant medication. 😧

Kaylee Pitman

I am freaaaaking out that you talked about Ozone therapy, I was hoping it would come up at some point!! I went to see this extreeeeemely grifty ā€œholisticā€ ā€œdoctorā€ once and they tried to cajole me into letting them give me an OZONE IV DRIP!!! If I wasn’t so terrified of needles I probably would have let them. At that point I had pretty bad anxiety and was looking for answers. (For me the ā€œanswerā€ ended up being increasing my medication dose but hey, Occam’s razor.) They gave me a ā€œfull examā€ which involved scanning my hand with this weird little device and telling me I had Lyme disease all over my body. ??? Anyway, someone I really trust referred me there but I have since realized we have WILDLY divergent views when it comes to health and I’m choosing to keep it that way šŸ˜‚ also, Lyme disease is a super real thing of course but I have noticed it being used in grifty corners of the health world as a stand in diagnosis for a lot of different chronic health issues that ā€œmainstream doctors are lying about,ā€ would be super interested to know if y’all have encountered that too!

Emily Patka

This episode is hilarious! Thank you so much for providing a healthy dose of comedic perspective on the insane diet trends taking up so much bandwidth in 2021.

Adrienne Newton

Con-BAd-ulations!! I love it!

Amy Weaver

I didn't read through all these comments so not sure if this has been suggested already, but next year you should consider calling this "Grifties and Uplifties."

Anne-Marie Zapf-Belanger

Literally LOL'd

K

Olivia Munn also dated the crybaby Aaron Rodgers. In fact, in 2019. So it was prob her gathering mountain spring water (it’s healthier you know, more animal feces than tap). He hasn’t been married. I’m in WI so obs we get a lot of Packers news.

Sadie tuescher

I didn’t notice until my second listening of this but when you mentioned Black Oxygen Organics I laughed because I have a family member that was a pretty high up seller in the group and it was really something when they got taken down for having lead and arsenic in their dirt lol

V

We're calling the "good" grifty award a "nifty," right? The Grifties & a Nifty?

Sarah Nau

Re noom andthe algorithm, I've pressed the "why do i get this ad" button on a noom ad, and it's because of my gender and age - thats it

Kat L

Yessss, thank you for so much of this! The one time in my life I had people saying "Wow, you look great!" because I got skinny, was when I was dealing with PTSD on top of CPTSD, wasn't eating, was in a terrible mental and emotional place... it felt shitty that people thought that was me looking my best. I was unhealthy. I weigh a good bit more now, and I'm SO MUCH healthier!! The extreme societal obsession with being thin comes out as people putting "you want to be thin" on other people / on me, even when I talk about me at my size now; like yes I'm talking about gaining weight, but I don't need you to comfort me right now. Let's just not!

Hannah Burtness

My favourite thing about Black Oxygen Organics is that influencers refer to it as BOO, which is pronounced the same way as the French word for mud ('bou'), which is literally what their product is. Even better, the dirt they sell is harvested from a bog in Casselman, a French-speaking town about 40 minutes from my hometown of Ottawa. The mud is from a French town and the branding is the French word for mud. They knew what they were doing......

Mailman

I'm just getting to this and I have to say the way Aubrey laughs at Mike's comments/jokes is one of the most delightful things and I love listening to it every episode but especially these funny ones

Corinne Goudreault

you have to be really privileged and ubiquitously thin to be able to go online and declare proudly that you barely bathe yourself without having your life flipped upside down.

Kenzie Owens

Ok I'm dying over the ozone thing. What? This has to be like some massive prank?

Kaitlin Weninger

i just have to comment that i don’t particularly think people were rooting for dirt on Olivia Munn because they were protective of john, i think it was because they were protective of Amanda Tendler.

Kenzie Owens

I want an episode where you pit the raw food wellness influencers against the carnivore people

Alanis P

The Grifties & The Nifties šŸ†

Eleanor Alexander

It's also hard hearing paid sponsorships for noom from video creators. I don't begrudge them because I know they have to make money. I just think to myself, oh my if you only knew.

Genevieve Walsh

Literally every ad since I've listened to this episode has been for Noom. So creepy. I love listening to you guys and you're amazing!

Jenn Bigelow

I truly believe my facial expressions to your podcasts need to be recorded!

Rosie Louise

This is a little late, but thank you SO MUCH for the little disclaimer at the end. During the beginning of COVID, I did noom for months. I did intermittent fasting. I even fell into the "tAkE lAxAtiVeS cAuSe tHeReS tOo mUcH pOoP" thing. I didnt realize until this episode that I had fallen into disordered eating, even if it seems obvious in retrospect because I was (and am) fat. I really wish someone had told me, but I think its just so ingrained that no one thought that what I was doing was wrong. Anyway thank you so much. I adore your content and its literally changed my self perception for the better.

Savannah Jenkins

I joined for this! Take my MONEY

AJ Harford

This episode was amazing (and hilarious)! Thank you Michael and Aubrey for this and for all of your episodes!!!

Jamie Olaf

The fun thing about the ozone therapy one is you can find papers arguing about it that are 50 or more years old.

Sarah

Still can't believe Naomi Wolf survived having her Death Recorded

Ellen

Grifties & Nifties!

Rebecca Decoster

Aubrey and Michael, I love you so.

Heather Alarcon

Desperately want a ā€œkeep eatin seedsā€ shirt

Mackenzie Joy

I think the positive counterpart to the Grifties awards should be called the ā€œUpliftiesā€

Emilie Reynolds

You know, I was told in high school science class that ozone was poisonous.

snackfaery

I just listened to this and realized: you know what intermittent fasting is? Not eating for say 8-9 hours at a time? It’s sleeping! So, I would have to say we are ALL intermittent fasting.

Jennifer Moses

TW: Noom permanently negatively affected my relationship with my body and food and hooked me when I was in a very vulnerable position, like any good cult

Wathgwen

My guess is the impact it had on indigenous farmers/people in South America who all of a sudden were monocropping it to keep up with America’s superfood demand, making it inaccessible to people who depended on it as a staple and screwed up farming balances that had existed for a long time. It’s good, but not some magical pseudo grain that will cure MS and let you break marathon records. Some of the claims on it were almost that ridiculous

Erin Marie Freel

Right? I fell for it because it was advertising on a body positivity podcast. I actually quit listening after a month of being very hungry and quit Noom. It’s Weight Watchers with psychology questionnaires.

Erin Marie Freel

"Why does this feel so important to me [to send this email]" - people who consider themselves good thoughtful people really get upset being told they are on the wrong side of a moral issue.

Neuroed

Oh gosh yes please. Also, "Christine Hassler" - not to be confused with "Christy Harrison" who writes/podcasts about Anti-Diet etc. Would love an episode on her as well. She seems decent but would love your thoughts!

Emma Trevor

I would love you guys to look at Prolon. My husband and I do it and are filled with self-loathing + shame every time. But also we bond? I just keep waiting for an episode and thus for my shame to grow (but I’ll prob totally do it again…).

Meg Marie

have y'all considered an episode (or 3) on Christine Hassler? her self help ideas were pretty basic at the beginning, but over the years she went WAY woo woo and full-on wannabe relationship guru with her current husband. they strike me as borderline future cult leaders wrapped in wellness ala nxivm...

Jennifer Smith

I'm sorry that this is happening to you. The whole wedding dress thing is a nightmare when you aren't "conventionally sized," and even if you are! Two points: Would he elope if you guys had a party after? That's what my DH and I did. Second, can you find separates that you like? Skirt and top kinda thing? It's YOUR wedding, so do what you want and screw all the bridal magazine "Must Do" lists!

Gena C

This is very off topic but I feel like you guys should do an episode about the wedding industry. I’ve been engaged for about 3 months, tried to convince my fiancĆ© to elope but he very much wants the party, and have been in pain the whole 3 months. I attempted to dress shop today and left in tears because the store didn’t have one single dress that would fit around my body. The sales woman told me to just pick the dress I liked most of the hanger and also that it would be an extra 15% in price due to a ā€œextra fabricā€ charge. Also just the insane dieting culture around weddings in general!!

Shaun Rogers

I have never bellowed in such unexpected glee as loudly as I did at Aubrey’s dramatic reading of Naomi Wolf (Woof)’s tweet response to the vaccine teddy bear. God fucking bless.

Rose Zwanenburg

I’m starting to think you guys should market your podcast as a wellness plan because despite how violently angry I get at these topics I always walk away from it feeing healthier and happier. The stigma about bodies really is what makes people feel sick and unhealthy and you make me feel like I just shoved a miracle cure up my butt. Thank you

Madison

So good. Random tidbit re: vegetables are poison because they taste bad - I used to work at farmers markets in the bay area and one of the number one questions customers asked was "is it sweet". It makes sense to ask that about strawberries, but broccoli? kale? what am I supposed to say to that. No, the dandelion greens actually taste really bad but that's ok because that's how food is. Anyway....

Ivy

I keep getting ads for that, on the Bechdelcast of all places

Mardi Gammon

I’ve just tried to look into the cost of foods in America and why it’s so expensive to eat a nutritious diet. All the videos I come across are very individualistic and don’t actually address this without eventually delving into ā€˜obesity epidemic’ language. Can you guys please do an episode on the cost of foods?

Mardi Gammon

Loved this and all your episodes

Megan Reiersen

How about an episode on Jane Fonda and her whole workout thing?

amy hutchings

I know!!! I’m so bitter. How dare they

Sharon

Yes!! I did it when it was medifast then take shape for life, and again as optavia. Interesting that they rebranded so many times. And I got insane pressure from my ā€œcoachā€ to keep buying and to start my own down line of people that I could ā€œcoach.ā€ Pressure to lose weight and to be a good MLM-er. GRIFTY!!

Sharon

Michael Hobbes: you said you have a huge chip on your shoulder about quinoa - why? Can you guys make that into an episode? Or make an episode about (the myth of) superfoods? You guys are amazing, keep it up! This is my absolute favorite podcast and I look forward to it every single week

HF7132

I wish I'd been a patron when you were doing your poll because I would have nominated ProLon for biggest grift of the year. I saw this on YouTube. Someone found a way to get people to pay hundreds of dollars for 5-day fasts. You basically pay $199 for a few packets of tea and dried soup or $565 for a 3-month supply of nearly-empty boxes. Very expensive cardboard, apparently. It starts with a coaching session as well that basically boils down to "You'll hardly know you're fasting, guys! It's gonna be great! You'll feel better than ever!" But it was developed by a scientist so surely it must be good!

Zefora

Oh also with the noom advertising, they definitely only market to people they think are fat. My girlfriend and I are the same age and only I get bombarded with noom ads. One of the only things I buy online is plus sized clothing New tinfoil hat (but not even cuz that’s absolutely how they work) added to the pile!

Riley MacKinnon

I love you guys!!ā¤ļø Listening on my way back and fourth to work keeps me interested, and questioning of any diet. Just wondering if you have any plans on covering some of the recent diets that are "lifestyles", whole 30, Paleo, just wondering

Meghan Zambon

Don’t know if I commented this but Billie Eillish was definitely near the best for me too! She showed her body for the first time, and Overheated was such a good song about it. To have her level of fame and be ridiculed for her ā€œgrandpaā€ clothing because she didn’t want to be sexualized as a child, but then to show off your body knowing you’ll get even more criticism was pretty dope

Riley MacKinnon

Aubrey's laugh is seriously my favorite thing!

Amy Atkisson

I just got to say Aubrey’s laugh just brings me so much joy.

Jennifer M Balsley

That was meant to say grifters lmao

Ally

Speaking of groceries, Michael Mosley, who has made a number of documentaries about fatness and whatever, is now selling a diet. Of course. I hated his documentaries bc it’s just the same thing constantly but like, wow. Capitalism strikes again.

Ally

This episode did not disappoint. Looking forward to them for the next 13 years.

Samantha Garner

Nicki Minaj's cousin's friend's testicles!!!! Oh just when I thought I could not POSSIBLY adore you more!

BinsQ

Me: hmm how do people fall for these terrible cults like qanon or NXIVM? Also me: This new thing is definitely a fad diet that won't work, but maybe if you follow it, it will? Me to Me: šŸ™„ Hence the existence of and need for The Grifties.

tabgirl

You guys are awesome and I'd fully fangirl you if I ever met you in person. Thanks for making the world better.

vissch

Also! A podcast after your hearts, Oh No Ross and Carrie, did a 3 episode series about urine therapy. Apparently I came here to talk about pee. I think Mike will especially enjoy this.

Siobhan Roberts

Lol, the most effective appetite suppressant for me is imagining that guy drinking his aged pee.

Siobhan Roberts

i think something that could be a good deep dive for u folks would be into the glamorizing of mental illness in like the 2010s on social media

Reid Lee

ā€œThe most effective appetite suppressant: Foodā€ LOVED this episode!

Julie B

Ugh yes! Like, I see and hear lots of Noom ads but IF is the thing I’m constantly seeing actual people recommend online. And not just for weight loss. I feel like I’ve seen it recommended for everything from cancer to brain fog.

Emily Maloney

The anti nutrients thing reminds me of the whole ā€œcaffeine is a diureticā€. Sure caffeine takes some water to process, but it doesn’t cancel out all the water in the tea/coffee. Tea was a mainstay for safe hydration for thousands of years because of the boiled water! Same with weak beer or watered wine! That’s how you safely drank water before reliable water treatment!

Meera Creagh

Michael’s knowledge of football players is about as good as mine and I’ll a British woman 🤣

Emma Trebble

Happy to hear I'm not the only one who can't keep Naomi Wolf and Naomi Klein straight. And for the Noom episode, please note that they have the gall to use a Pixies song. Possibly the thing I hate most about them.

Kristen North

I really loved this and can't wait for the Noom episode

Bastilledeb

i loved this episode! i think it would be really cool if you guys did an episode on fatness being tied to villains (esp in children’s media) and also an episode on gym bro culture and/or preworkout

lauren

I am also looking forward to full episode on Noom. I am constantly bombarded by their creepy ads.

Zach Cone

I am feeling so validated by your Noom comments, and looking forward to a full episode on this. As a recovering "Noomer" twice over, I am in violent agreement that this is just another sneaky diet masquerading as lifestyle change. I've heard it described as Weight Watchers for Milleninals. Like this is a good thing. I cannot roll my eyes hard enough...thanks for a fun and informative episode!

Julia W.

Can we get some TLC specials turned series eps? Coming for you Dr. NowšŸ‘€

Katelyn

Loved it! I’m curious to hear your thoughts on Michael Mosley. The 5:2 diet was super popular there for a while, especially in Aus/UK. He also has a scary 800 calorie diet which he advocates and he’s regularly featured on the BBC.

Maddie Hanover

I don’t know if someone’s mentioned this already but I’m curious to hear your opinion on how being fat is seen as extra risk of COVID. Is it true? Or correlation extrapolation?

Meredith Everitt

Hey look, adaptogens! https://labmuffin.com/scientism-or-science-washing-in-beauty/

Vera Horvath

The grifties and the nifties!

Natalie Oswald

Listening to this late but please please please do a whole episode on Dave Asprey!!

Anna Jahns

I shall wear the ball gown for next time šŸ˜‰

Nancy Odendaal

Loved hearing Optavia mentioned, MP should def consider an entire episode on it bc it is SO SINISTER. Diet MLM that it just teaching disordered eating (they actually recommend you don't exercise, bc you aren't consuming enough calories to safely exercise -- but this is for your health??) they also have special plans to target children, it is a rabbit hole of fucked up "OPTAVIA offers specialized plans for teen boys and girls between the ages of 13 to 17 years that includes nutritionally balanced meals and 2 to 3 OPTAVIA Fuelings per day. Teens have unique nutritional needs required for optimal growth and well-being."

Kaitlin M Mooney

Oh, Teddi Jo Mellencamp. She’s off the Housewives and onto The Grifties. That’s a trajectory I can get behind (?)

Krystal

As a former air pollution professional, my favorite EPA publication title is "Ozone: Good Up High, Bad Down Below". So simple. So important.

Katie

The phrase ā€œsoles and holesā€ has been living rent free in my head for days ā˜¹ļø

Madeline Jarvis

It was such a small bit, but Aubrey mentioning that kale gets labeled a superfood while collards do not really stood out to me! I grew up in the South and eat collards on a regular basis. I remember trying kale for the first time and think ā€œoh these are just dark leafy greens, like collards.ā€ ā€œSuperfoodā€ is such an arbitrary BS label!

Katie

Finally got to listen to this, love especially in the wake of the constant Noom ads on YouTube. ConBADulations is such an amazing word. Off to go butt chug some Ozone, maybe it'll help my sinus infection.

Chelsea

Goddamnit I was putting on mascara when Aubrey laughed at Michaels ā€œmost plants don’t want to be eatenā€ hahahahahahbaa goddamnit

Samantha Brobst

Came here to say that Noom is the worst and I hope 2022 is the year it all comes crashing down

Baba Corva

Another great episode guys! I’m a bit late to the party. I wanted to comment about celebrities like Jonah Hill setting boundaries on how their bodies are discussed in the media. This reminded me of a video I watched recently of Henry Cavill featuring several clips of him visibly uncomfortable as interviewers and costars are openly fawning over his body. He clearly does not want this attention. It’s definitely gross how bodies are discussed. Can this please stop. Yuck.

Victoria Ruble

Aubrey’s deep sigh when Mike’s explaining about poop parasites just sent me! šŸ˜† This is such a great episode.

Jess C

I am so excited for you guys to do a whole ep on Noom - I was sucked into Noom in 2016/2017 and it was 100% the spring board from which my eating disorder took the deepest dive. Now, like Aubrey, I get a million fucking ads in my algorithm and I find them so triggering I can’t skip fast enough.

Luna Peach

I loved this episode so much. Thank you so much for all your content and all your great research

Rayna

There isn't a single second of this episode that I didn't enjoy, but for some reason "ConBADulations" is an unforgettable word that I think will be part of my vocabulary for years to come. (much better and more accurate than 'condolensces' šŸ˜‹)

Nicholas šŸŒˆšŸ³ļøā€āš§ļø

I know "Asana Rebel" is not a diet plan, but i bloody hate it's stupid ass name, and it advertises really agressively on my otherwise truly wholesome Instagram feed

Vera Horvath

Thank you for discussing noom (and looking forward to the future episode). I did the free trial a few years ago and thought I was missing something…but yeah it’s just BS like everything else. Was laughing out loud while driving and listening to this ep. Thanks for everything you do!

jamie moroco

The statuette for the Griftie Award has to be shaped like the Brooklyn Bridge :)

Ann Parker

I’m so sorry about your husband. I hope you are healing from your loss. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Teri Andrews

thank you for the message at the end <3

Ada’s Wife

The Grifties and the *nifties* :)

Natalie Harwood

In June I kept getting so many mentions of how much weight I had lost. Like it was such a great thing. My husband had just died, of course, I had lost weight!

Ouida Nason

love this! also i would add that we should perhaps each be awarded a thrifty for saving our $$$ on ass-crap diet shit and instead giving those $'s to be MP patreons!

Emma Trevor

The main take away I have is that I want to go get a donut šŸ©

Cal

My first introduction to Noom was in an ad read for a podcast with a somewhat more body positive leaning audience. They phrased it as being a "wellness app" to help you with all your "wellness goals" (and their wellness goals just happened to be exercising and eating better). I felt so tricked when I heard an NPR ad introducing Noom as a weight loss approach!

Noah Bateman

Nicki Minaj’s cousin’s friend’s testiclesā€¦šŸ¤£ I love you two! I’m sorry it took me so long to join your Patreon, and I swear it won’t happen again. Oh! Have you done Susan Powter yet? If not, …

Kerry Luckett

Such a great episode! Every time I see a Noom ad on Facebook now I’ve been reporting it as ā€œmisleading/scamā€ lol. I feel it’s deserved.

Emma Cook

I’m so happy to have this episode right as the New Year comes around and all the diet/weight loss bullshit comes in full force. Less Noom, more Michael and Audrey hating Noom. Thank u for this excellent and super funny episode!

Leah Dooley

Can't wait for the Noom episode!

Sophie Milne

So good! So so fuckin good. Conbadulations indeed.

Heather Fiore

I hope in your Noom research you touch on how it's 'based on psychology' yet they have NO psychologists employed.

Tstarr

Hey guys! This was great. Would love to hear a pod on all of these ā€œmorning greensā€ - I’m getting nonstop ads for AG1, for example.

Alexandra Carter

I've noticed this with other accounts... like I never liked it!

Sharon Fain

Food deserts would be a great one (especially there are many different angles to look at it and many differing health view points... some call them food swamps as the issue to them is not a lack of food but a lack of fresher foods).

Sharon Fain

As someone who also tried it and didn't hate it *for me*, I think it has a lot to do with your disposition to body image and eating. It asks yo to weigh yourself all the time... I don't have a scale and was like now way-- this will make me neurotic about the number. I also ignored the the daily calorie limit (I think I made my own) and more focused on trying to make consistently healthy meals. Even the step counting could lead to disordered behavior. I think there are just too many things that are "default" that are the classic gateways to disordered eating/exercise.

Sharon Fain

This is the first I'm ever hearing of Aaron Rodgers as well

Brittany

I love you so much. Thanks for this podcast.

Rebeccuh

So interesting about the sleep pattern. I also heard recommendations for melatonin. Did it help?

Emily Baker

OMG my mom was so into Shaklee in the 80’s! Is it still around? She didn’t sell it but it doesn’t surprise me that it’s an MLM. Her sister threw Tupperware parties around the same time!

Emily Baker

Conbadulations on a great awards show!

amy hutchings

I really hope you do an intermittent fasting episode. I am fortunate not to feel pressured by fad diets most of the time, but this one is coming at me from all sides, including my doctor.

Deirdre M

Another person excited for the Noom episode. Hearing your brief banter about it in this bonus episode helped me recognize that using it was stressing me out rather than something I valued. It felt so good to cancel my subscription and delete the app!

Robin Anderson

Thank you for using the word ā€œfatā€ in a non-shaming way. It helps me feel more acceptable every time I hear one of you say it without judgment. I so need that every day. ā¤ļø

Shawna Fields

I loved Michael’s discovery about Aaron Rodgers. I was waiting to hear if either Aubrey or Michael had realized that he also dated Olivia Munn šŸ˜† I’m sure he picked up some of his Hollywood Woo from her.

Teri Andrews

Listen to Its Been A Minute podcast 8/13/21. It goes into how choosing not to shower is part of white privilege and how the whole debate has historical ties.

Katie Rhames

Okay, I haven't finished the episode yet, but I think you should name the 1 positive award the Nifty! So you have the Nifty and the Grifties šŸ…šŸŽ–ļøšŸ†

Alyx Olney

Next year, worst Joe Rogan health advice should just be a category.

Rebecca Bullock Godwin

Leana Wen also took over planned parenthood and fucked it all up. She also was health commissioner of Baltimore city and sucked. She deserves her own griftiest grifter award, only cares about her own self promotion.

Claire Slesinski

As someone who quit running college cross country and track because of crippling race anxiety that let me crying and having panic attacks and enabled my disordered eating, I'm all for kids being told it's OK to quit if you're miserable, even if you're talented!

Allie L.

ā€œIt’s just very fun to make fun of ridiculous things, and for me, at least, that helps me release their hold on me. When you can look at how ridiculous some of this stuff is, it can be easier to let it go.ā€ -Aubrey Gordon #TheHealingPowerOfSatire

J M

Can’t wait for the Noom episode!!! Tear it down!!!!

Rachel

replying to just hopefully flag this more if they read the comments! love michael and the show but this makes me cringe a bit.

Carly Gove

really want to hear more about liquid chlorophyll lol

Carly Gove

My fave celebrity take was Zac Efron telling men not to idealize his Baywatch body because it's not normal and not healthy to maintain. He said something like "whatever body you have now, be that."

Laura H.

please do an ep on joe rogan, i really don’t care to do my own research into that guy

Hayley

Was it Dax and Kristen Bell? For some reason I thought it was Ashton and Mila…. but it sounds very Dax Shepherd so that makes sense.

zeddpoole

I definitely fell into the intermittent fasting trap earlier this year and oh my goodness, I felt awful the entire time. Turns out, not letting myself eat for most of the day isn't great for my Crohns disease and the fatigue issues that come with it. Funny how it was advertised to me through a Crohn's disease support group šŸ™ƒ

Aurora

I'm so looking forward to the noom special. Intuitive fasting: isn't that sleep?!!

Angela Rosin

I’m surprised Shaklee Shakes didn’t make the cut. If you like terrible fad diets in the form of an MLM look no further!

Nada Jawad

Oh my god, I love that people say if you eat the papaya seeds you poop out something that looks like little worms. Or is it maybe that you're pooping out undigested papaya seeds?! I mean... !!!!!

Kim Niemi

This was so much fun! Gotta say, I still don’t know what an adaptogen is supposed to be but I did get into mushroom coffee and reishi hot cocoa this year! Thanks for helping me not take it too seriously.

Nicole

When he was like ā€œoh it was just a hobby in my 20sā€ I was like wait WHAT that is even more unexpected!

Nicole

Mind blown! I had no idea what intuitive fasting was. Yours is the best podcast of 2021. The theme music sends me.

Emily Baker

Michael, saying it’s for hot people to get hotter implies only skinny people are hot, and losing weight inherently adds to attractiveness. You have a hot fat co-host! (I know you didn’t mean it that way, but you’ve said similar things before, so just wanted to note it. Love you both!)

Rachel Carman

Re: the ads: I started clicking the ā€œwhy are you seeing this ad?ā€ on diet ads for n Facebook, and it’s absolutely because I’ve looked at plus size clothes. The worst one was an ad for bing eating disorder treatment, which apparently was shown to me bc I had clicked a lane Bryant ad.

Rachel Carman

ā€œPlant based for weight lossā€ is proven as ineffective by the fact I’ve been a fat vegetarian for 20 years. I’m totally in favor of eating a plant based diet if it works for you for a whole host of reasons, but it doesn’t necessarily make you skinny, and doesn’t suit everyone.

Rachel Carman

Not only is Optavia extreme restriction, it’s also an MLM so double garbage!

Miranda MacDonald

Loved this episode! Thank you for an amazing year of podcast - absolutely loved all the episodes. Thanks so much for all the work you do. Plus, my least fav celeb take (apart from the covid stuff) was Gwyneth Ps application of sunscreen… she just finds a way to get worse every year.

Little Anina

Amazing! Thank you for another fab year of podcasts šŸ˜šŸ¤©

M Dunne

The Grifties were cool but what I'm really excited for is the rollout of the Celebrity Raw Milk Ratings.

Linden Rose

While I totally agree with y’all’s analysis of adaptogens -did I even spell that right?? Who knows šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø- I thought you might find it interesting that my doctor prescribed me Ashwaganda root to help with my recovery from COVID! Something about it really helps people regain a normal sleeping pattern that Covid often causes you to lose (like me). Love y’all’s show, it always challenges my opinions and makes me questions biases I didn’t even know I had!! Thank you!!

Lexi Brooks

Happy new year to both of you, and thank you for all you do!

Simone Seguin

YESSSSSS Grifties! So many bizarre and upsetting nominations! I hope everyone gets real aggressive with th ad reporting and blocking as we turn the page to 2022. Don’t let the bastards grind you down with their diet culture bullshit.

Erin Marziale

Can’t wait for the Noom episode! I used it for about 6 months and the issue for me, aside from suggesting that I could lose 30 lbs in a ridiculously short about of time, is that it seems like they think eating ā€˜unhealthy’ food is an education issue, hence the daily articles. It’s not. It’s so much more complicated.

Jessica

Loved this as usual, you guys are amazing :) thank you for all the awesome learning and entertainment

Imogen Cable

Amen to Aubrey's laugh - it is soul-quenching. ā¤ļø Wondered if y'all would entertain an episode on WALL-E, and/or other animated "kids'" movies that you either find helpful or harmful in terms of advancing fat lib.

Amy

Father David AssSpray 🤣

Megan LaPuma

I love Maintenance Phase SO MUCH! I learn fun things, I laugh a lot, I love Michael’s snarky asides, and OMG Aubrey’s laugh!!! This episode was great fun and I deeply appreciated Aubrey’s closing comments. Love the show, love you both!

Kip (she, her)

Looking forward to your episode on noom (like everyone else is!). But one thing I find interesting about noom is that I have to periodically "unlike" noom on Facebook because even though I have never "liked" them and never would, my account always ends up following them. Seems super sketch. I didn't even know I was following them the first time, a person dm'd me to let me know. Like maybe I "accidentally" liked it...but multiple times? Maybe this is a little too conspiracy theory-y but yeah weird. Love you both!

Shalee CM

This DELIVERED.

Becca

I used to work in a medical lab that analyzed stool samples. (Michael’s dream job.) One of the things we checked for was parasites. We found about one person a day that had a parasite, and they were almost exclusively people that had traveled to Africa or South America. And the patients we tested were sick, I mean really sick, who had diarrhea for a long period of time. But you know what looks like worms in stool? Banana strings. And guess what people with diarrhea are told to eat? So of course people were convinced they had parasites and we must be wrong.

Marsha Walpole

I have only just started listening to this one, but PLEASE DO AN EPISODE ON FUCKING NOOM!!!!

Jennifer R.

Just me and my earbud trying to do some grocery shopping while y'all talk about butt swallowing smog. 🤣

Nicole Sealy

I feel like we could be listening to Mike do podcasts for a hundred years and he would still pull random unknown stuff out about himself

Mo Springer

Just became a Patreon member to hear this episode!

Bebe

This was an incredibly fun listen! Happy new year to you both!!

Dana

This was a great way to end the year y’all! For the positive category how about Nifties? Thanks so much for creating this podcast. Have a great 2022!

Kenyatta Matthews

Given the comments on antinutrients, I think a missing addition from the in memoriam section was the: Raw Food Diet.

Kirsten Hearn

Also just honourable mention for Billie Eilish completely changing how her body was seen, taking so much shit for it, and using it for a dope ass album. Her not being stick thin and this podcast are literally the reasons why I didn’t start restricting again

Riley MacKinnon

Knew it had to be intuitive fasting. The true marker of how co-opted intuitive eating has become

Riley MacKinnon

hi! my friend is studying housing/rent injustice and we were discussing our intersection of interests which led to food deserts! would you guys ever do an episode on the history of food deserts? and like, the whole foods nonsense stuff

auds

Loved the Grifties!! Not sure if anyone else is a who weekly? Listener but Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley won worst celebrity couple in their annual award show episode that also released today. Got a kick out of that one!! They are the worst! Never forget when Shailene promoted EATING CLAY as part of her diet. Thanks Aubrey + Michael, happy new year šŸ’˜

Hailey

In ~2005 I knew a guy who was into urine therapy. (I know that he did "age" it, but I don't know if he always did that.) Yes he is a white dude with a Ph.D. in ecology. He made the same stupid arguments you'd expect from an "articulate moron" (not my phrase but it's so perfect) who advocates for adaptogens or whatever. No matter what your problem was, he said you could solve it with urine therapy. A cyst that might need to be surgically removed? Rub some urine on it! (For this particular purpose I remember that he definitely advocated for "aging" it first.) Do you have intestinal parasites? Time to do a...you guessed it...urine cleanse! (That's where you drink nothing but your own urine for like a week—combining the joy of the master cleanse with the crisp, smooth taste of your own piss.) There was nothing that urine couldn't treat. So, you know, if you're disabled, it's your own damn fault because you didn't drink enough urine! I once asked him: if urine consists solely of stuff that your body is getting rid of, then why is it good to put it back into your body? I wish I wrote down his answer, it made no sense but was *chef's kiss* in a sad but amusing kind of way. When I saw the announcement for the grifties I actually looked up urine therapy, because I thought that if it's taken off (which you'd expect, thanks to social media) it would be perfect to include in this episode. I couldn't find anything, so thank you to the hero who tracked down that article and sent it in. I think urine therapy is bad and silly but I'd love to convince tech bros that it's the latest craze and a sign of your masculinity, like leaving your mask below your nose or getting hair plugs from Elon Musk's hair transplant guy or whatever.

Sandra

Mad Men S1 is in 1960, and this film very much inspired Matthew Weiner, particularly in the set design. The ceilings were prominent, they were very modern. Matthew Weiner made sure there were ceilings all over the offices of Sterling Cooper (television shows often do not include ceilings, because it's cheaper). Later in the season, Joan and Roger get in an argument after she saw The Apartment. That episode ends with a visual allusion as the redheaded Joan gets into the elevator.

Roberta Lipp

And now a holiday bonus for Michael: Smokey Glow just posted a video on Rachel Hollis!

Magda F.

Yes yes! Came here to say the same thing. There are multiple reasons it got flack. And I was disappointed that MP didn't discuss the racial issues and white supremacy of the situation.

Rachel Maeroff

oh my god the carnivore thing makes me so mad. i have a gastrointestinal chronic illness and there’s a subreddit for it. i was asking ppl on reddit what foods they were able to eat when they were flaring and one guy told me i shouldn’t eat bread and should switch to a fully carnivore diet. these diets and this misinformation really prey on people with chronic illness who are desperate. also i’m a vegetarian lol.

Mariana

Yeah, I’m curious as to what everyone ā€˜s starting point/inputs were. I said I wanted to lose ten lbs and it gave me a net goal of 1800. That said, I rarely kept within the thermometer, and mostly just bread the articles and tried to eat more nutritious foods.

McKenzie Clark

Thank you for so many laughs with this episode! It really brightened my day.

Nicole Von Germeten

Intermittent fasting was the first step towards my life-consuming eating disorder so "intuitive fasting" can fuck RIGHT OFF

Julia Kazmer

Gah, I'm so furious about Noom! They tried to limit me to 1200 calories a day, and that's not normal or sustainable. For folks who it helped think about food in a healthy way, I'm sincerely glad for you. But 1200 calories a day was just like... wtaflmao. I had a much better experience on WW, but as soon as I went off of it (wait for it), I gained most of my weight back. (I'm now committed instead to looking at my relationship to my body and our cultural ideas about weight and bodies. So thanks to Aubrey and Mike for that!)

Jean B

I really like Noom. I Guess that’s just me. There are things not to like, but it really helped me be okay with my body, and to clear my brain and thinking around food, and also to be okay with eating anything at any time. You can really take the good with the bad. Intermittent fasting is so much worse!

Andrea Michael

Lolz, I totally forgot about Nicki Minaj’s cousin and his balls

Valerie Wilson

I joined this Patreon not only for the great information so diligently researched that I learn from these two, but also because twice a month was not enough for me to hear Aubrey laugh. And I was rewarded today with her joyous burst of laughter about food that doesn’t want to be eaten being bad for you.

MaryEllen Houlihan

Haven't finished the episode yet but I gotta say, Joe Rogan is the guy you name the Grifties equivalent of the Cecil B. DeMile Award after.

De Roche

Pausing eight minutes in just to sing the praises of quitting something when it isn’t working for you, and letting your kids quit. I’m a parent of three (now young adult) children, and one of the biggest disagreements their father and I consistently had as they were growing up was whether or not letting them quit things was ok. Let’s hear it for team quit if you aren’t happy doing something! Thanks you two- I love this podcast so šŸ’•

sarah laprƩ

Can't wait for the Noom episode! I tried it and was instantly angry and horrified and quit it after a few days. I think PTSD from years of Weight Watchers. Same garbage, different package.

David Maynard

That was terrific. Desperately needed that laugh after the holidays. Thanks Guys!!

Kelly Novak

Okay don’t kick me out of the group but…I actually liked noom. šŸ™ˆ Hear me out! I went in to it with a totally different mindset than anything else I had ever tried before. Namely, I decided to love myself. Radically. I opened up to the idea of radical self love and acceptance and only joined noom so that I could bring some mindfulness to my eating habits. The 1200 calorie thing was not my experience at all. I think my default was set to 1500 but I had my Apple Watch connected and the calorie count would go up throughout the day based on my activity. Once I started exercising regularly, I often couldn’t even reach my calorie ā€œgoalsā€ because it would be in the 2200-2500 range. So I just stopped paying attention to that, but I did like recording my food *for periods of time* when I felt like I was starting to veer off in to mindless snacking and overeating territory. It is absolutely true that there is a whole lot of toxic diet garbage within noom and to that, my inner hype-girl would smack it away and say ā€œoh hell no, you can fuck all the way off with THAT.ā€ But some of it was legitimately helpful to me. For instance: weighing yourself every day. I know! Most anti-diet people (to which I would consider myself) say throw your scales out, don’t ever weigh yourself. But for me, that reinforces fear around my weight and shame about the number, no matter what it has ever been in my life. But normalizing stepping on the scale every morning has taken away that terrible, scary relationship I had with it. It’s literally just a number. It goes up, it goes down. It’s not a judgement or a reflection of my value as a person. I know people say ā€œjust use your clothes as a measurementā€ but for me, by the time my clothes get too tight, it feels like it’s too late and panic sets in. What can I wear?! How long will it take to get back to these pants feeling normal? How did this happen?! Checking in with the scale most days can clue me in sooner so I don’t get to the point of clothes not fitting. It becomes a gentle conversation and getting curious about what’s happening. What have my eating habits been like? When did I last eat a vegetable? How many days/weeks in a row have I been overly indulgent and do I also feel sluggish and moody? Oh..okay maybe I try to rein it in a touch. Some of these things I got on my own and I would not credit my 50lb (and counting) weight loss completely to them, I would never write a review for them because A LOT of it is garbage. But I did just want to offer a dissenting view that it is not COMPLETELY garbage. It needs work, but it is a million times better than any other diet I’ve ever seen. I imagine Angela Lansbury would approve of a lot of it. I also need to reiterate how much work I did on my soul first to be able to sway away the toxic diet messaging that creeps in to the lessons like a freaking ninja. I think that’s the only way I’ve been successful.

Heythere

I’m waiting for the deep dive episode on Joe Rogan episode…

I definitely didn’t just snort out loud in Target at ā€œJoe Namath.ā€ Y’all. šŸ˜‚

I’m so excited to listen to this!!

Lara Wilson

I feel like a personally failed to nominate Kyrie Irving for worst celebrity takes because he literally quit (ish*) his job because he refused to get vaccinated! *he still technically is on the team but isn’t playing or getting paid so….

Leandra Fernandez

I'm definitely looking forward to the NOOM episode as well. I fell for it early this year before I'd discovered this podcast, and I'm looking forward to Aubrey and Michael's take. To be fair, it did help me reassess when I was actually hungry and/or wanted to eat and get out of the rut of stress/mindless eating that I'd fallen into as a lawyer with two kids at home during the pandemic. It was also useful in helping me keep track of my steps and water intake. That said, they drag out their useful pop psychology tips/exercises far longer than warranted and there are much cheaper options for what is, at the end of the day, a step-counter and calorie tracker with some chicken soup for the soul thrown in.

McKenzie Clark

I'm obsessed with this Noom thing. I've literally never heard of it until this podcast, so I started asking around, and yeah, it seems like they only target people shopping plus size! And people that Google them, apparently. What have i done

Melanie Miles

As a vegan animal rights advocate, I have been anxiously waiting for vegan bashing (not to be confused with plant-based for health which is a grift), and there were a couple lines in today’s episode that had me jumping for joy. You all are brilliant in every way and hilarious to boot.

Quincy Markowitz

Love you both so much!! Mr. Kutcher's "Soles and Holes" shower guide rhyme reminded me of one I was offered: "Pits, Slits, & Tits"

Rebecca

The Bravo Maintenance Phase mashup of my dreams

Janine O

THANK YOU!!! SOOO GOOD! I cannot wait to hear more in 2022! Aubrey, you're voice saying Fuck off rings in my head all the time ( it's the best!) and it's what I'm saying to anyone chatting me up about their diets in 2022. <3

Audrey Amaro

Thank you so much! Much Covid-bleakness here and this episode made me guffaw and snort with laughter today!

Aquila (a-quill-a)

I tried this one and holy shit was I MISERABLE. I was in a place where I could safely lose 100lbs or more and just so desperate. It's expensive as shit, and I actually called the help line for them because (TMI) I hadn't pooped in over a week. They said it was because I had to waste to remove and just said deal with it. My mother in law is a huge yo-yo dieter, and is using Optavia now. She said she's "released" over 75 lbs in like 10 weeks (which is super sus) and I try to warn her she WILL gain it all back when she stops šŸ™„

Elita Schmidt

Please make merch with ā€œGet your butts out, everybody!ā€ on it. That made me laugh so loud at my work desk.

Corin Balkovek

1. This is great and what I needed today 2. Can confirm that Noom ads target plus size website shoppers. I crossed the threshold from straight size to plus size this year and I went from having zero Noom ads to only Noom ads after visiting the Eloquii website for the first time

knb

Yes! In Pennsylvania where he doesnt actually live!

Holly Fitzpatrick

I feel about food trends similar to how I feel about gender roles. Strictly avoiding something bc of [trend/societal expectations] is not that different from strictly conforming to it

Veronica T

As a RHOBH fan, a key element of the teddi Mellencamp NXIVM diet is that she’s John cougar mellencamp’s daughter lol

Ari Goldfine

This episode is, like everything you do, a chef kiss emoji straight to my heart. One additional resource I'd like to share is about the showering celebrities thing because it sparked a big backlash in BIPOC communities online. Here's an article: https://www.mic.com/life/bragging-about-not-bathing-your-kids-is-a-blatant-act-of-white-privilege-82757199

Róisín West

As a celiac who has been diagnosed by biopsy, I would gladly give up quinoa if I could! I hate that everyone thinks all quinoa eaters are trendy people!

Meg Anderson-King

I like intuitive eating to guide my actual choices, not just when i eat. Do i really want a particular thing, will i really enjoy it. If i stop and think, i might change my mind or realize i really want something else. It helps. My parents are very scheduled people and that works for them. Why try to fix what ain't broke.

Laura

I for one do practice intuitive fasting. I eat when I'm hungry, stop when I'm satiated, and then fast for 10-12 hours every night

Veronica T

Grifties and nifties!!

Becky Baker

Noom is the wooorst. I thought they'd at least pretend to be different? But IMMEDIATELY jumped into disordered eating tricks.

Jaime Cartales

Aubrey: "noom…makes me so irrationally angry" it's not irrational!!!!!

Veronica T

The grifties and gifties

Kiki Powers

So ready for the Noom episode. I found it when I was trying to recover from an ED and looking for a way to be mindful about eating so I could do things like include more fruits and veggies and work out more WITHOUT triggering old behaviors. They had a free trial of their "consultant" service and asked me questions about my goals etc. I was open about my recovery. They still suggested I go on a 1200 cal/day diet. I was furious. I'm also convinced that they (and other diet bs) marketed to me after Instagram/etc tracked my online behavior of me searching for various ED help resources...

Kate Hvizdos

Naomi Osaka, Simone Biles, and Christen Press should win the Nifty

Melissa

Just wanna say thank you. My dietician recommended your podcast to me and it has been so helpful to listen, laugh, and feel supported and connected in a world of Noom ads. Thank you!!!

Amanda Fischer

Looking forward to the upcoming Noom episode. The ads are driving me up the wall on YouTube

Jenny Drozd

I'm going to be really sad if you lay into the parents that don't bathe their kids often.

Jess Burford

So glad to hear a Noom episode is upcoming! I heard about Noom because they did (and still do) advertise on Blank Check. It sounded like basically a way to track healthy habits and get some external accountability for it. That sounded appealing to me, so I did the free trial and was pretty appalled—as far as I could tell, there wasn’t any habit tracking at all—it was just a diet! The main focus is on eating foods that are heavy for their calorie count because it supposedly makes you feel fuller? And you give them your weight and they subtract 15 from that and say ā€œyou could be X weight in 12 weeksā€ (or however long they say it will take). I cancelled and now get ads for it everywhere, including mailings in the actual mail. I don’t fully remember but I’m pretty sure they still use the number that’s my weight minus 15 pounds in some of the personalized advertising as a way to ā€œtemptā€ me to come back. Super gross! Can’t wait to learn more about them!

Julia C.

Real talk, I feel seen. I also thought Aaron Rogers was some obscure football player.

Meg Anderson-King

Pro tip: hit hide ad/this ad is irrelevant on all your platforms when you see a noom/diet/weight loss ad! It takes a while for the algorithm to catch up but I've been doing that on every single diety ad for 2 years and never see it anymore! Except this time of year unfortunately... but still worth taking 5 seconds each time to do.

H e ll a m a l a i s e

For 2 years now I've hit "block/hide/I don't like this ad/its irrelevant" etc on every social media platform and I never see it anymore! Now it's just people irl telling me about it šŸ˜’šŸ˜’

H e ll a m a l a i s e

Match made in Grifties heaven!

H e ll a m a l a i s e

Wow you're so lucky! It's insidious and ubiquitous!!

H e ll a m a l a i s e

I signed up for noom specifically to see why it’s garbage. They marketed at me so aggressively and finally got me because they offered me an 80% discount. I have lost a total 0 lbs but have enjoyed asking my psychology professor fiancĆ© if their psych tricks check out (they do not), posting ā€œwell actuallyā€ statements on the group chats, and laughing at their lazy summaries of debunked Ted Talks presented as facts. But they are correct that eating fruits and veggies is good and I have also enjoyed giving myself a gold star for incorporating more fresh produce into my diet.

Sky Hatter

Great episode! Cant wait for your episode on Noom. Would love to hear a take down on Optavia (which was briefly mentioned) - it's an MLM, and renames food as "fueling" - calories are restricted so much you arent allowed to exercise! It seems like it was everywhere in 2021.

Amy

I love this show. Question asked in good faith: what are the problems or downsides of intuitive eating? I’d love to hear a deep dive episode on the titular book and Aubrey’s ambivalence with intuitive eating. In my house growing up, we were expected to eat at specific times and to finish everything on our plates (esp those enormous glasses of milk, because America in the 90s). Now as an adult, I frequently argue with my dad about meal times, as he was raised to eat precisely at 6pm, irregardless of anything else. Learning to eat when I’m actually hungry was a big thing for me in my 20s, so I’m curious to learn more about other peoples experiences and takes on this

webb12

Listening to this while drinking my morning coffee was a mistake xD I nearly just choked from laughing

Sibil Brock

A person who I usually love, but who has not escaped diet culture yet is Jon Lovett of Pod Save America and Lovett or Leave It. He is a 39 year old gay man who advertises Noom a bunch.

Althea Greene

It's funny, I haven't heard a single thing about Noom but now I'm curious

Erin Prizant

Lmao yes Wall-E

Stephanie Arce

I have unfortunately seen MIA being anti vaxx and she's very into homeopathy. I tend to give her a pass because I like her and her politics otherwise and she doesn't go on about it too much but it's not great. Unlike this show which was very great, thank you!

Cate Kneale

Ohh, I can't wait for the Noom episode now! That was a diet plan I followed and felt pretty good about so I'm excited to learn why it's garbage lol

Elita Schmidt

I liked it when Naomi Klein would periodically just tweet, I'm the other one.

Cate Kneale

Fun fact: Aaron Rogers dated Olivia Munn two or three girlfriends ago.

Maegan McHugh

Ahahaha thank you for the Naomi mnemonic, I thought I was the only one having problems mixing them up!

Charli

What a great episode! I always am so impressed with the editing! But also: How does the guy with the urine keep track of the aging? Does he have a row of 14 jars full of urine with labels on them standing around?

Teresa Liska

Guys, the teasing about an entire episode debunking Noom has me SO EXCITED. Please, for the love of God, get those damn ads out of my internet-browsing algorithm.

Alex Pattullo

Just started this and my morning is already made! Also, clearly the one positive grifty would be a nifty :)
