I’ve been hard at work further expanding the scope of this project, head down in a mountain of xeroxed FBI COINTELPRO docs & declassified confidential informant files. I’ve compiled new sources for us to pick over, including rounding up issues of cobwebbed underground papers like Ramparts & Rat. I’ve read “American Time Bomb” by Joshua Melville—a memoir cum investigative research history written by the son of Melville Collective leader & “Mad Bomber” Sam Melville, whose pre-Weather Underground insurrectionary bombing outfit would beat the Dohrn, Ayers, & Rudd cell to detonation by some months or a year & who would ultimately perish in the Attica Uprising (the federal prison rebellion in the Buffalo area in the early ‘70s), a text that will prove useful for us as it fills in the blanks that litter the incomplete saga of one of the primary suspects in our NL Rogues Gallery of confidential informants, namely George Demmerle or Prince Crazy, who I was able to confirm did in fact infiltrate & worm his way into the Columbia communes in the Spring of ‘68. Demmerle would use the cache & street cred won of his Columbia involvement & BPP ties to infiltrate Melville’s group & help seal the child of a Progressive Labor & CPUSA organizer’s fate by playing that classic, ratty role in a Bureau organized sting. I’ve been busy. Working thru Vander Wall & Churchill’s “The COINTELPRO Papers” which should make a Pt. III appearance & the Jeremy Varon book on the overlooked internationalism of the New Left with the Weather Underground, Melville Collective, & Red Army Faction as case studies. And much more besides.
