London Has Fallen (E356)

If you’ve spent any time on Travel YouTube lately, you’ve probably seen it: grim walk-and-talks through London that portray neighborhoods like post-apocalyptic no-go zones. This week, Annie Kelly digs into the booming “London Has Fallen” genre of online video travelogue. Unscrupulous influencers trawl London’s most diverse neighborhoods hunting for “proof” of civilizational collapse, and reliably finding it in the form of clickbait, racism-by-implication, and algorithm-friendly panic.

Thank you for being patron of QAA.

All episodes of Annie Kelly’s new 6-part podcast miniseries “Truly Tradly Deeply” are available to Cursed Media subscribers. Sign up now for the most in depth analysis of tradwives you can hear anywhere.

Like a lot of right wing media crazes, this is basically a larp. You get to inject meaning into your pointless life by pretending you're reporting on some sort of DMZ walking around Brixton. When I was young I used to pretend there were snipers watching from upstairs windows that I had to dodge on my way to school, this isn't much different.

A problem with my payment method prevented access to QAA for a while. I’d forgotten how excellent this podcast is. I’m a former Londoner who lived in Whitechapel for over a year. Yes it’s poor and untidy. But the Bangladeshis I met were great. And my local corner shop made me realise that smosas are epic snacks and not the dry cleggy nonsense you get in supermarkets. Brixton has always been part of my life as a South Londoner. Again, so many fun nights at The Fridge or Mass at St Luke’s or on Coldharbour Lane (is the Dogstar still going?) I rage at the bs of these grifting YouTubers and how they misportray my home town. Keep up the amazing work! Love you!

Norway gets almost critizised for being very homogenous. But after ww2 when northern norway was burned down and thousands of them moved south and many moved into appartment blocks in my city there was antagonism towards them for decades after. And they where the same people from the same country but they spoke a different accent and had slight variations in cusine

Travrl yt? I watch lots of travel stuff but ive never seen this kinda thing. As with everything these days, when there is so much content its on you to filter out ragebait, grifts and trash. Its like with music, 60 years ago "everyone" listened to whatever was topping radio charts. Now you can find music thats almost tailor made for you, but you gotta put a little effort in to find it.

Take us back to the Whitechapel of yesteryear…when Jack the Ripper roamed the streets

I’d be so interested to learn more about ‘auditing’ in the UK and if it’s a British phenomenon? These auditors are a really stessful presence in Leeds where I live, they claim to be ‘documenting’ anything they consider to be anti-British and have been turning up at the asylum seeker hotels recognised as press by the police even tho they are just guys with phones

Strange turn around. One week you're calling Cubans who don5 support the regime gusanos, the next you're claiming people are spebding 20 years in jail for selling cigars.

Was that first guy doing the video South African? his accent sounded a little bit like he might be. I currently live on the outskirts of London and I teach in a state school. Earlier this year we had an incident where colleagues of mine multiple colleagues posted racist and incendiary unsubstantiated news reports in our work chat. I have heard children using racist language who are white British against children who are not. Today when I tried to do a Holocaust remembrance Day activity the children refused to cooperate and talked over it while the video was describing Auschwitz. I'm looking at moving.

We get it man, you don't like Julian. Offer one of your other thoughts, if you have one.

Love an episode where Travis feels safe to chime in with his insights without the garuntee he will be interrupted and derailed by some obnoxious needless bullshit by certain other hosts

👍👍 Great episode. All 3 hosts contribute to the convorsation and not once start ranting and screaming dick jokes or trite anti-capitalist rants of almost mall punk middle schooler quality. Keep episodes like this coming.
