Trickle Down Episode 12: The Elixir of Life Part 2

Part 2 of our exploration of how Gatorade influenced the science of hydration. In this episode Travis talks about how the Army developed bad doctrine around hydrating soldiers while preparing for war in the Middle East, how Gatorade helped finance athletic organizations, and why dangers related to overhydration were ignored in the 90s.

Also at one point Jake launches into an ad for Carpi Sun for some reason.

Gatorade Water is available in supermarkets!

Matthew Bluth

Does anyone remember the Gatorade commercial featuring one of the Toronto Raptors players squaring off against a literal raptor and both quenching their thirst with the neon-colored drink?

People aren’t drinking enough piss? Oh they will be… they will be…

Diary of Doom

"You get some of the water you need from the foods you eat" and the similar advice that's now popular, "you don't need a multivitamin because you get the vitamins you need from your food," seem kind of ridiculous to me. If your diet is ideally balanced, sure, both of those are true. That's the point of a balanced diet, after all. But I very much doubt most people eat a balanced diet. I certainly don't! Most of what I eat in an average day is just various forms of bread. The low quality of the cheap foods available to people who have neither money nor time is a known issue. Food deserts are also an issue. It's almost, kind of, like the "COVID deaths with complications from preexisting health problems shouldn't be counted as COVID deaths" thing, in the sense that people who have preexisting health problems are the majority, not a minority of special cases, and bad diet is also a majority.

Oh, and a clif bar or similar every hour or two (but only when doing extreme hikes.

It’s what plants crave!

Behold a Pale Whore

I'd just like to say to Jake, cucumber lime gatorade us the best gatorade, ignore the haters, you're right, I will continue to buy from this evil brand until they discontinue it.

I'm just shocked that Idiocracy and Brawndo were never mentioned in one of these episodes 😅 It has electrolytes!
