Premium Episode 236: Tik Tokers Heart Bin Laden

The ongoing discourse around social media and extremism took a strange twist earlier this month after users of the social media platform Tik Tok discovered a 2002 work by Osama bin Laden called “Letter to America.” Tik Tokers noted the letter’s analysis of American imperialism and its effects on the Middle East, as well as the influence of Zionist thought on American politics. Many expressed shock and acted as if the brief letter completely altered their conception of the world, as if this was the very first critique of American foreign policy they ever encountered. This controversy ignited a very dumb conversation about  the influence of social media, and Tik Tok in general, on young people.

To unpack this tempest in a teapot, Travis, Jake, and Liv discuss the letter itself, how Tik Tokers reacted to it, and how the controversy may be inflated by panic over Chinese-owned Tik Tok.

Everything is antisemitism to you guys.

I appreciated hearing a full Travis belly laugh at Liv’s joke about cops going on TikTok for a second and passing out like it’s fentanyl lol

You mentioned it being brought up in foreign policy college classes, I'm pretty sure I read that for AP US History in *high school* c. 2010. As I recall, it was recommended reading for an essay assignment and my teacher was pretty big on primary documents, but the point of it was "look at this document and be capable of realizing that some points are valid and others are absolute nonsense."

I do think people forget how those who were against Bush going into Iraq ( i was one) were attacked and shut out as peaceniks and unpatriotic. In fact, America had the world on our side for a brief moment after 9/11 and had Gore been president ( as he should have been) it wouldn’t have gone the way that it did. It tells us how important the right leader is and what we really should look for in one. Colin Powells bizarre presentation should have been a warning. He resigned shortly after even though people called for him to run for president. I think it’s a great point that people seem to want everything to be very simple because they don’t want to sort through the grey areas. Wouldn’t it be great if people tried to really understand something BEFORE they gave their damn opinion about it? But…. That takes too long. 😝

C’mon

As a 45 year old old man, it’s strikes me as hilarious that a section of our society, are driving themselves into a panic over GenZ’kids on TikTok, when all I saw on January 6th 2021, were a mass of mostly late 30ish and up buffoons from my generation, Genx, acting like complete fucking fools on the steps of the capital, over THAT guy, in full view of all of us, born out of their collective addiction towards reading about “truths” on FB, various Chans, and BirdX. Give me a break. lol.

I really want this to be what’s happening. And I would love if the digging doesn’t lead to a resurgence of Loose Change etc. It’s so easy to see the opposite happening though. I was searching Amelia Earhart new info the other day and one of the prompts was “was Amelia Earhart blind and deaf” so it’s hard to believe in the questioning.

Shout out to Jake’s Dragonheart reference.

I dunno, I ran into a lot of these videos. Not one tik toker said ‘’you know, he’s right, butt sex is bad and convert to jihadism’’ To me, they’re asking questions about the genocides of the world. They’re digging for information and aren’t staying silent about babies being blown up. Which is more than I can say about everyone else being so fkn silent about these atrocities.
