Premium Episode 222: Race Change To Another, Subliminals & Oli London

An online community convinced they can change their race by watching and listening to youtube videos called "subliminals". The "Race Change To Another" or RCTA crowd have more tangible counterparts in figures like Oli London, a person who first garnered media attention for getting a bunch of plastic surgery to resemble a male K-POP star, and has since become a right wing talking head at the center of the anti-trans panic. A cursed episode for sure.

Premium Episode 222: Race Change To Another, Subliminals & Oli London

Some of you in these comments truly have brain worms. White people don’t get to just decide they’re a different race now. Shut the fuck up.

Goes to show how far from our humanity the present society has removed us that we can even feel like that… I also wonder if many of the people experiencing non human nature are also autistic and unaware of that. If you also experience altered mental states due to neurology it can seem a plausible explanation. Despite the giggles I do think overall the pods take was playful but not harsh. I love Liv’s giggles, because she also gets it too - being a younger member of the cast. I liked what Travis said about the sense of alienation people can feel within their community and class. Overall I think it was good natured and not too snarky. Most of the pod members are either neurodivergent in some manner by their own words, or have struggled with mental health/addiction issues. Thats what I like about QAA as a millennial, the full body cringe at ourselves and thank god we didn’t have tiktok.

I can’t say anything on the racial aspect but I think with stuff like elf kin there’s no reason to clown on people like that. I used to consider myself elf kin during a time when I was struggling with my identity as well as with psychosis and delusions, and I think most people who believe themselves to be non-human are likely going through something similar in terms of mental health. I certainly don’t think these people are a hindrance to the trans movement nor are most of them malicious in any way. In the past you guys have treated people with mental health issues similar to this respectfully so it was surprising to hear you go in on these people especially right after saying that retreating to their inner fantasy world is sometimes the only way people know how to deal with the pressures of modern day society. I understand how elf kin and other non-human “identities” can look ridiculous from the outside but speaking from personal experience this kind of ridicule only serves to further isolate these people when really what they need is compassion and connection with other human beings to bring them out of their delusions or fantastical thinking. I know this probably didn’t appear to be anything beyond just weird people on the internet and I don’t think you guys meant to be cruel or anything but I just hope that people can be more compassionate towards others who are struggling in this way in the future because having delusions about one’s core identity or species or whatever is very difficult and indicative of serious mental health issues and social isolation that should be addressed with compassion

I feel like they were strongly influenced by the mainstream and academic reaction to Dolezal, and also the open letter in the Hypatia controversy. That's really not a good thing, especially the latter - the open letter was promoted by groups who were absolutely not unbiased actors, and were mischaracterizing critiques of contradictions within their academic orthodoxy in order to whip up widespread condemnations of Tuval's article w/o substantively responding to its contents. Race essentialism is deeply embedded in our culture, and even in academic disciplines that argue race is a social construct, but moreso than gender it's still a lot more acceptable to view it as primarily (or even exclusively) inborn. I'd feel like you're right that they're going to eventually be on the wrong side of history here, but I also tend to think we're still a long ways away from that. OTOH, I would never have thought we'd get from where we were in the 90s WRT gender to where we are now in only 20-30y, so...

I struggled with this episode because ( and I understand the point that comparing is like apples and oranges) it felt like the type of conversation that was happening around “tranny’s “ in the 90s before we started to treat trans people with the dignity and understanding that is the basic right of all humanity . It feels as if the pod may be on the wrong side of history on this one. And equally, if not more importantly, it felt like punching down. The majority of people being ridiculed weren’t grifters or people of influence , just very unhappy people struggling with feelings of alienation. Usually pod very sensitive and reasonable with walking that line but felt this one was a misstep

Would bet real money that grimes listens to those elf subliminals

Hey does anyone still have that AI voice of Liv laying around? Thank you.

You will become Lee Young Ho. You will became the best StarCraft player of all time. You will master the Terran race and best Jaedong. He was your rival, but he no longer plays. You have much experience playing Protoss. You have much experience playing Zerg. You a seeded into the Round of 16 of the ASL. You are choosing random. You are a strong contender despite playing random instead of straight up Terran.
