Episode 231: Conservapedia
Added 2023-05-16 06:03:36 +0000 UTCSometimes it feels like the online world is split into multiple, incompatible perceptions of reality.
This is not a new development. In fact, in the mid-aughts one man tried to create an isolated island of American christian conservative thinking by launching a website called Conservapedia. Though it was advertised as being free from the supposed liberal bias of Wikipedia, Conservapedia became a home of pseudoscience, conspiracy theories, and general right-wing grievances. It even launched a project to create a new English translation of the Bible that was manlier and more conservative than previous translations.
To help us understand the history of Conservapedia, we recruited our resident reddit atheist debunker, Travis. He’s going to walk us through the story of Conservpedia’s creation and show off some of the latest additions to the online encyclopedia, which is still active after 17 years.

Andy is the type of guy who will only fuck through a hole in the bedsheets, and only for the purposes of reproduction. He will then be in a dark mood for the next week because having an orgasm is sinful.

2023-05-22 17:11:47 +0000 UTCI mean more “the liberalism that existed in the Obama era”, not necessarily “Obama’s liberalism”. RationalWiki generally really like Bernie Sanders, for example. They’re more like the kind of people who were criticizing Obama from the left. To the left of the Democrat mainstream, but strongly identifying as “liberal” and fully believing in “the evils of communism”. Like I said, they’re article about liberalism claims that the liberalism that leftists dislike is “European liberalism”, while “American liberalism” is people like Sanders and AOC, who they like.

2023-05-21 23:15:05 +0000 UTCThe thing with Obama-era liberals is that their technocratic public-private pro-market nonsense tends to move us in the direction of libertarian policy but with a lot of window dressing to hide it. The podcast If Books Could Kill just dropped a really good (and really depressing) 2-parter on the book Nudge, which pretty much epitomized this "smartest guy in the room" technocratic elitism.

2023-05-21 20:48:52 +0000 UTCThey actually generally don’t like libertarians. The consensus on the site is basically Obama-era liberalism. I wouldn’t say neolibs, all liberals are pro-capitalism. They’re article on “liberalism” is hilariously defensive of the fact that a lot of younger progressives online reject the label.

2023-05-21 15:30:34 +0000 UTCThey always struck me more as atheist debate-bro libertarians than neolibs, although I suppose I should concede they probably seemed too reasonable & decent-minded to be proper libertarians.

2023-05-20 23:56:32 +0000 UTCRationalWiki is a fascinating document in itself. It’s such a time-capsule if 2000s left-liberalism. You have all the standard mocking of conservatives and religion, but when you get to anything about economics they’re desperate to tell you how much they love capitalism and despise communism. They call the Black Panthers a “violent street gang”. Crazy to read now.

2023-05-19 05:16:28 +0000 UTCThere really is such a thing as “Xi Jinping Thought.” In the PRC, the whole collection of a leader’s policy principles get referred to in that way. So, there’s also Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Thought, and so on. “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics” is an alternative name for Deng Xiaoping Thought. Whatever the Conservapedia entry says, I’m pretty sure that Joe Biden doesn’t subscribe to either body of thought, but that’s another story . . . .

2023-05-18 00:55:41 +0000 UTCI've been gawking at Conservapedia since its inception. It's been particularly interesting going from revering George W. Bush as infallible God-Emperor to now being smeared as basically a deep state communist and all but active member of the Joe Biden "US Color Revolution" Junta because he dared to not actively support Trump. I love a Travis episode! I love when the online atheist in him is let loose on these clowns. (Also do look up the US Color Revolution on there. It's a pretty wild narrative they have concocted of the last few years.)
