Episode 210: Balenciaga, Ye, Club Q

We deal with the Balenciaga ad campaigns that caused a flare up of satanic panic, chat a bit about Kanye West, and address Elon's Musk restoration of suspended Twitter accounts. Plus there's new Q drops and boy do they suck. Finally we broach the way the tragic shooting at Club Q has spawned ridiculous conspiracy theories.

Post the green queen you god damn dork!

Dan

I wish I was on "heroic amounts of amphetamines" but alas, there is a shortage.

Richard Bunsinator

Oh wow, you're right. I read the star witness had committed perjury in the trial but he lied about NOT offering him a bribe. I've had it backwards for years.

Kevin

Was he falsely accused? I thought he was tried and convicted..

Tyler Rabbit

Well Ill be damned, always heard that was about Cobain. Wiki: "...he had first written the song in 1991 before the band even had a record deal, the song's popularity was augmented by a widespread perception that it was about the 1994 suicide of Kurt Cobain."

Jon

Also strange to use, "Hey Man, Nice Shot," for that video because it's not about shooting other people, it's about Budd Dwyer who was famously falsely accused of racketeering so he called a press conference for all the stations that were accusing him and then shot himself in the head on live TV.

Kevin

Thank you for covering and reading Q drops, the voice is great and since leaving twitter this is my only connection to the absolutely cooked stuff that goes down on social media and the internet in general

Holy shit. What a dark episode.

You guys should do a premium episode on the DWAC stock. So much good material on that subreddit

The thing is, the fashion industry absolutely does normalise pedophilia- just in less of a ‘satanic cabal’ way, and more of a ‘the beauty standard for women is small, thin, hairless, petite, youthful, and generally as close to a child as possible, and showing any sign of maturity or aging is the kiss of death’ way. It’s not a cabal, it’s literally just misogyny.

The sell “bondage” gear in the mall at Hot Topic. There was nothing edgy about that ad

Right on, Julian. I used to be a lackey in the high end contemporary art word. It's a circus no doubts, especially when you get into the gallerists and collectors, but the artwork itself is so high context that I could probably be denied employment if people did a search on some of the people I worked for. And it wouldn't take long.

The “Baal” reference that Julian raised reminded me of a tweet claiming that Balenciaga, when written as “bal en ci aga,” is Latin for “do as thou wilt.” (It was even adorned with a picture of Aleister Crowley, just in case we didn’t get the reference.) Both Google Translate and my four years of Catholic-school Latin tell me that it isn’t Latin. And I think Balenciaga’s a Basque name, anyway.

I understand it's a real grind covering the Q drops, especially since Watkins has all but given the game away. BUT your podcast is my only source for Q news and I appreciate your coverage, even if you decide to keep it brief in hopes of retaining your sanity.

I got a bit weepy when listening to Julian break down the subversion and appropriation of LGBTQI culture and the scapegoating that inevitably follows when such contextually vacant cultural provocations are repurposed into marketing campaigns for brands trying to be edgy. My family used to regularly send me such ads, clipped from magazines and with the accompanying conservative editorial articles attached, like what Julian describes is literally what happens, LITERALLY. Sigh. America will never be cool at this rate.
