Trickle Down Episode 9: Upset Tummies
Added 2022-07-02 18:47:12 +0000 UTCFor most of the 20th century, the causes of peptic ulcers were a mystery to scientists and doctors. The most popular theory was that it was a disease caused by stress. The mystery was finally unraveled in the 1980s when Australian physician Barry Marshall deliberately infected himself with the H. Pylori bacteria, got sick, and cured himself with an antibiotic treatment. The discovery that bacteria caused ulcers earned Marshall and his research partner a Nobel Prize in 2005.
But why did it take so long to discover the true cause and treatment of ulcers? The answer lies in bad evidence collection methods, medical dogma that caused scientists to fully understand the evidence, and pharmaceutical companies that didn’t stand to profit from an antibiotic cure of ulcers. This resulted in many missed opportunities to discover the real cause of ulcers, and countless needlessly suffering patients and even deaths.

This makes me sooo angry. My daddy suffered from peptic ulcers for years. Drink milk and eat bland food!! Exactly what was recommended!! He developed cancer when he was 74 in the area of esophagus, close to stomach area where the ulcer had been. Don’t know if there was any connection, but is suspicious to me!!

I has a really bland diet by nature, so the only thing they could take away from me was chocolate. And they did. Torture. When I was 11 I got salmonella - I lived in a small town in Mexico with no water, was quite common. I got antibiotics for that. I never had gastritis after that. And i still ingest large amounts of chocolate. I'd never thought about this until I heard this episode. So, thanks!

2022-07-04 12:08:14 +0000 UTCWell that was interesting! This might solve a family mystery- my Dad suffered terribly from peptic ulcers in the 1970s. And yes, our family diet was bland and Dad had to keep taking this medication for it. Until the summer (Australia) of 1980. He was involved in a very serious car accident with quite extensive injuries. After he recovered from the accident, his ulcer was gone. His GP told him it was probably the shock of the car accident (!) and the ulcers never returned. Seems as though it was the heavy duty antibiotics he was on in hospital that cured him, this is a fascinating thought. Really enjoyed the series.

In 2009 I had a terrible bleeding ulcer I live in the USA and when I went to the Dr. I was told to eat a bland diet, I had to do my own research online to find this information about ulcers being caused bu bacteria... it's just insane
