Anecdote #1: In the 1930s South Korea, the name Hyun was practically royalty, especially around Gyeongju. Ruth's dad, Hyun Jae-Ho, was the last in line of a long list of blue-bloods tracing back to the Joseon dynasty.
Anecdote #2: Ruth's parents tragically passed away in a car accident shortly after her birth. Fortunately, the little girl, not yet able to walk, wasn't in the vehicle. She was then adopted by the McDouglas family of Skykomish, a stone's throw from Seattle. Growing up in a modest home, her adoptive father worked as a lumberjack.
