Premium Episode 133: Operation Mindfuck & Discordianism

A mix of parody religion and intellectual philosophy that emerged from the psychedelic 60s, the ideas of Ayn Rand and the growing paranoia of the Nixon era, Discordianism gave birth to 'Operation Mindfuck', an organized attempt to spread the now infamous ‘Illuminati’ conspiracy theory — the belief that an ancient club of what were actually pro-enlightenment Bavarian rationalists secretly control the world. This is the story of Robert Anton Wilson, Kerry Thornley and other Discordians; as well as their connections to Lee Harvey Oswald, Playboy Magazine, the Watergate scandal & Alan Moore.

I first discovered Discordianism through a book describing a new utopian system titled "Panocracy" (German: "Panokratie" - I am not quite sure whether it's available by now in an English translation in its entirety), written by the German computer scientist Tobias Breiner and published under the pseudonym Tobi Blubb, before I read the Illuminatus trilogy.

it was cool to hear you guys give credit where it was due to the all-consuming fugue state of agnosticism. discordianism was once upon a time my general topic of interest to flex on my peers in high school, and then slowly seeped into my skin through my pocket like that scene in SLC punk. good episode though.

TIL that Alan Moore joined a joke cult created by a buddy of Lee Harvey Oswald. Their "beliefs" about order and chaos are pretty much what Jordan Peterson believes unironically.

it's uhh... it's actually pretty fucking weird finding out that the people who invented discordianism actually believed in it

"A meaningless, disempowering abyss." good summary of libertarianism there

This is amazing. Thank you for reporting on all of this.

have a deeper look at KLF, they wrote a book on how to get a number one song https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Manual and released it almost side by side with Doctorin the Tardis (to show that they knew what they were talking about and getting it to number one!) They are a very interesting pair who have influenced a LOT of music, Cauty started in Zodiac Mindwarp whos look created the entire Califonia big hair metal look. Just crazy talented guys.

Discordianism is just critical race theory for CIA agents.

Andrew Criscione

how many people pointed out that Jake read a typo and that it's "Flower Power Forever"?

i got kind of into discordianism after a deep wiki-dive back in high school, neat to see it pop up again after all these years. fnord!

I got back onto Patreon specifically for this episode. As a theistic Pagan who also gets many giggles out of Discordianism, I was so fucking hyped when I saw this episode drop.

Must do Jordan Maxwell

I used to read a lot of the Discordians' stuff. RAW was a favorite. If you're a Linux/MacOS user you either have a little easter eggish command-line app called 'ddate' or you can easily install it (sudo apt install ddate). It just gives you today's Discordian date. Here's today's: $ ddate Today is Prickle-Prickle, the 58th day of Confusion in the YOLD 3187
