Premium Episode 129: Lab Leak Hypothesis feat Dr. Alex Greninger
Added 2021-06-19 21:38:20 +0000 UTC
We spoke to a clinical pathologist and the assistant director of the clinical virology lab at University of Washington Medical Center. The topic this week is the lab leak hypothesis - which has recently seen a revival in public discussion.
On a recent episode of the CANADALAND podcast Elaine Dewar who is a Journalist in Canada explores the evidence of the level 4 lab in Winnipeg being involved in this whole mess. It’s an interesting listen the episode is called “Mommy where does COVID come from” it seems objective but hey what do I know!

I agree-- Rogan would maybe take a lot of research, but worth it.

In the "Qanon is Dead feat Mike Rothschild" bonus episode Jake said his public pool in Chicago contained "urine indicator dye," like in that Adam Sandler movie. Travis rightly questioned the existence of such a substance--all signs seem to point to it being a myth.

I love you guys so much! I dont think it would hurt to touch on things you may have gotten wrong in the past.
This was all a bit personal for me so bear with me: I had recently gotten into a Facebook skirmish with a friend who was sharing lab-leak stuff early into the pandemic--then some credible arguments emerged that pointed to a few alarming problems with the animal-to-human transmission theory and the scientific community basically concurred that lab-leak needed to be given a serious consideration in light of all of these findings. The thing is, I had just listened to the episode where you first acknowledged the lab-leak hypothesis, (which at the time, was largely being pushed by the Maga crowd) and you debunked it by pointing to research that we now know may have been premature. So I was really excited to see this episode, and while it had a lot of great info, I would have appreciated a bit more humility re acknowledging that you guys were working genuinely with the info that you had at the time, but now the science is more ambiguous.
Just the thoughts of one fan! Like I said, I love you guys and I'm happy to to a patreon!

PS, that aforementioned semi-pilled friend most recently pushed Ivermectin on me after hearing Dr. Pierre Kory touting it's efficacy on Joe Rogan's dumbass podcast. I think either one of those clowns would make interesting show topics! I'd be particularly interested to hear a Travis deep dive on Kory. The guy has got "opportunistic huckster" written all over him; I'd be shocked if this was his first grift.

Great episode, even if the expert was kind of tangential. He had a lot to say. But one thing, Logan, for god’ sake, please pronounce the virus SARS- KOH-VEE 2 (like the researcher did) and not SARS-CAUV- 2. Killing me.
Love you guys the most.

Quality journalism. If only all coverage of this topic dealt with its nuances so well.

oh man, so the crown=corona thing is neat, but i don't know if you knew there's a whole bunch of chiropractors who took that and ran with it to 'the corona is the crown and thus the virus is male, so to heal it we must focus and elevate our female earth energy to counter it and that will make it go away'

This is going to sound weird, but I just wanted to thank you guys- I’ve been listening for several months now, and I think that listening to you guys talk about conspiracy theories has better equipped me to have conversations with my schizophrenic brother about his delusions. I feel like I know how to communicate constructively without enabling so much better now. And he’s not even into Q (He doesn’t give a fuck about those kids, I’m sure)! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You’ve been there for me in a way that no one in my life really has the ability to be.

That's just not true. There's no evidence to date that point in any way to the WIV as the source of the COVID-19 infection. The only evidence provided is the fact that 2 (some sources say 3) workers at the lab got sick with some sort of flu-like illness a few weeks before the first official case was identified.
1. It's quite possible that illness was just the flu, considering this was in the middle of the flu season.
2. The WIV is in the middle of an urban area, where the workers might have gotten it from the population, where the virus had likely already started propagating.
The virus was identified in early Dec 2019; but that means it was already in the population before that. We simply don't know when the virus first appeared in the population yet.
It doesn't mean it's impossible, but to claim there's actual evidence of a lab leak is simply false.

I used to think the lab leak was unlikely, but there is some evidence for a lab leak. And lab leak does not mean anti-China or anti-Asian.
