You'd be hard pressed to find folk in this corner of the West that ain't heard the exploits of the villainous 'Boxcar Beck'. While it's tough to sort out fact from fib in the many tales of his wicked crimes, damn near everyone seems to be in agreement that he was one mean sonofabitch, and the frontier's been safer since his fiery death in Obsidian during the Fire at Pitch Quarry a decade and a half ago.
Story goes that he ran with a posse of heavily-armed hombres called the Carrion Crew that shot up dozens of trains from the Rockies to the Appalachians, making out like bandit kings with their ill-gotten gains. And among all these mean, nasty, and ugly reprobates, he was by far the meanest, the nastiest, and the ugliest.
And it weren't the lawmen that finally caught up with them in the end, but greed itself what did them in. Green-eyed jealousy lit a fire under those no-good ne'er-do-wells, leading to bloody infighting that soon sent their whole operation up in smoke, scattering the remaining crew to the desert winds.
Taslin Beck died that day. Least, he was supposed to. Ain't nobody quite certain if he made some sorta deal with the devil, or if he was just too damn ugly for hell and got sent back, but ever since the crew went belly-up, there's been plenty of sightings of a lone, mysterious stranger turnin' up and slingin' enough lead to drag those craven cretins what survived that fire back to hell with him.
Nowadays, the story of the Carrion Crew seems like just a tall tale for frontier children. A passing interest as their exploits slowly fade into memory now that civilized society's startin' to creep back into their prior stomping grounds.
