Chapter 1 – The Town of Lambda

The journey is going pretty well.

I hunted three more Great Rabbits before deciding to enter the forest.

The grasslands here seem to be the habitat for these species, as I encountered more than ten of them before going in, but because of my low-level skills, I wasn’t able to subdue most of them.

Around half of the number I encountered, perhaps?

I felt regret. If I had at least a bow and arrows, I would have… oh yeah, I have magic! And so, I used the light-attribute attack spell [Light Bullet] on another Great Rabbit that popped to my side.

As its name implied, the spell was literally a bullet of light. But despite it being a starter spell, its power and range were quite impressive, and it took down the Great Rabbit in a single hit.

If only I have thought of this sooner…

As I entered the forest, I saw another monster called the Horned Rabbit, which seemed to be the higher species of the Great Rabbit.

But despite this guy having better offensive capabilities, well, because of its added horn in its head, it’s a lot inferior to the Great Rabbit in both speeds of movement and ferocity.

In other words, they are even a lesser match to me than the Great Rabbits.

Whenever they turn in a corner and lunged at me, I would back away and bash them with my buckler, which would put them out of stance, then I would slash them with my sword in this opportunity.

Or, if I saw them first,

[Light Bullet]!

I will shoot them with my magic spell, and they will be gone. Either is an easy win.

“Ugh, what a gory mess. [Holy Purification].”

I used the [Holy Purification] spell, which is part of the [Light Magic], to remove the bloodstain and other flesh on my sword.

Normally, this spell is used to exorcise the undead, in the sense of removing “everything unclean” from the body, but because of that, it also has a convenient side effect of removing dirt from the body and clothes.

As for how it will “clean” your body, it is not like you will be washed with water. Instead, you will be surrounded by light, and after that light disappears, everything will become clean.

It’s super convenient, isn’t it? No need to lather and rinse.

In addition to the Horned Rabbit, there also came a monster called Forest Wolf, as well as the fantasy-staple goblins and kobolds.

None of them were particularly difficult to fight.

I thought I would feel a sense of aversion or something toward the goblins and kobolds because they felt a bit human-like, but surprisingly, I was able to defeat them without any problems.

That said, the number of monsters is surprisingly huge.

I think I killed close to 100 of them on the first day alone.

And thanks to the battle EXP given by these monsters, my skills and levels have risen significantly.

I also learned a skill called [Shield Proficiency] when I tried to use my shield to block enemy attacks as much as possible.

After learning this skill, I felt like I became even better at using a shield.

Is this how it feels to have an autocorrection?

As expected of fantasy.

Oh, yes, I found out that I would also learn new magic whenever I improve my [Light Magic] skill to a certain level.

So far, besides [Strengthen Body] and [Strengthen Senses], which I had from the very beginning, I also learned new support magic spells such as [Strengthen Weapon], [Strengthen Armor], and [Strengthen Shield].

From these arrays of spells, with [Light Bullet] being the only offensive spell it has, I could say that Light Magic seems to be mainly for recovery and reinforcement.

But it cannot be denied that these spells alone are plenty useful on their own.

Thanks to [Strengthen Weapon] and [Strengthen Shield], I was able to last those hundred battles without getting a chip on my cheap-looking iron sword or a crack in my wooden buckler.

However, using these skills constantly, together with my moderate use of [Light Bullet], consumed me about 30% of my Magic Power this whole day alone. Nevertheless, I think it was worth it, as it was with the expense of my only weapons at hand not breaking, or rather, even improving by a lot, with the iron sword increasing its sharpness and the wooden buckler increasing its coverage.

Well, even if they were to break, at worst, I would have still managed with just my bare hands and my [Light Bullets].

By the way, once learned, I could readily use the magic spell automatically, without any prior training whatsoever, just like the skills.

You might ask, why haven’t I gotten tired even though I am running around and slaying monsters all day? This is probably thanks to my [Divine Skill].

I do get a little fatigued after a series of battles, but it’ll only take me a couple of breaths, and I’m back to my peak condition.

I really appreciate the fact that stamina is restored even when it has nothing to do with sex.

Oh, by the way, stamina does not seem to be reflected in the status.

Perhaps it might have a [notification] when you reach a certain level of exhaustion, but it would be difficult for me now that I have my [Divine Skill] to confirm it. As you know, because of the skill, it will be hard for me to get really tired.

However, no matter how many cheat-like skills I have, I feel like sleep is still necessary, so I would try to get some ZZs as much as possible at night.

Of course, it is not like the monsters are all sleeping as well once the darkness comes. At night, nocturnal monsters such as skeletons, ghosts, zombies, and other undead types roam, but they are no trouble as they only take one hit with my [Holy Purification] skill.

Still, while [Holy Purification] makes it easier to defeat the undead, it also has the disadvantage of making their entire body disappear.

No corpses. Which also means no magic stone or any kind of loot.

What is the magic stone, and what is it used for, you may ask? Well, it is a resource unique to this world, usually a black stone-like substance that dwells in the hearts of monsters you’ve slain.

If it’s from a weak monster that appears in this forest, its size is about the tip of your thumb.

As for its use? Well, if I were to sum it up in one word, it’s “fuel”. Or should I say “battery”?

Anyway, it is a kind of like power source for the machines that move using magic power in this world.

Since I have hunted many, I have a lot of magic stones in my possession. Of course, this means plenty of monster meat, too, among which I decided to roast the meat of a Great Rabbit over a fire and eat it.

This will be the first time I’m tasting the meat of this world.

The block of meat was already dismantled by the effect of [Storage], but I decided to cut it further into small pieces with my sword, of course with [Strengthen Weapon] applied.

I was afraid of food poisoning, so I also put some “holy purification” on the meat.

Next, I took out the fire starter and what came out was a 30-centimeter-long stick with a slightly reddish color on one side.

I lightly pressed that part against the dead wood I had collected, and it immediately burst into flames.

Yep, super convenient.

I roasted the meat of the Great Rabbit over the fire I created, sprinkled salt that I had on my [Storage Unit] on it, and ate it.

Now it’s all processed meat.

I also tried putting in soy sauce, shichimi, and even curry powder, but it was delicious no matter what I tried.

In the end, I was able to eat the whole Great Rabbit meat that was about the size of a large dog.

I guess I won’t have sudden cravings anytime soon.

After finishing my meal with an after-meal coffee, of course with my magic coffee mug, I cleaned my mouth, body, clothes, and equipment with [Holy Purification] and took a few random furs to my [Storage Unit]. Then, after positioning myself on a comfortable surface, wrapping myself up, and then placing a [Warding] spell which will prevent enemies from getting closer, I went to sleep.

When I woke up the next morning, I noticed that my magic power had fully recovered.

Magic power, sometimes referred to as “mana,” recovers over time, but the amount of recovery is greatly influenced by the state of one’s body and mind.

It is easiest to recover when you are asleep and harder to recover when doing something.

It is also said that it is even harder to recover if you are tired or mentally ill.

Well, because I now have my [Divine Skill], which prevents me from being tired, it’s as good as saying that I am immune to physical fatigue, and as such, my mana recovery is always at its peak.

Thanks to my unlimited stamina, I made it through the forest in the morning of the second day and reached the town of Lambda before nightfall.

The town is surrounded by a low wooden fence.

For once, I thought, are those really enough? But then again, I realized that I am in another world, and barriers that prevent monsters, even people, from entering without permission exist.

“Uhm, W-welcome to the town of Lambda.”

At the entrance to the city stood a woman in leather armor with a spear in her hand.

By her looks, she is the gatekeeper(?), but by the tone of her voice alone, she looks unreliable.

Her arms and legs also don’t look very muscular. Isn’t she just a normal town girl?

Well, barriers exist, so this much could just be considered a formality.

I’m in front of the fence, and the gatekeeper girl is on the other side.

“Um, what can I do for you?”

She looks nervous about something.

But if you look closely, you can see she’s quite cute.

Though I can’t see her face on the whole because of her ill-fitting helmet.

“I’d like to go to the temple of the Fertility Goddess. May I?”

“Is it for a prayer vigil?”

“Well, yeah. A prayer vigil.”

“U-understood. Now put your hand in there, please.”

At the end of the fence was a long pillar with a wooden board attached.

Something that looked like a white plate was attached to the wooden board.

When I put my hand on the white plate, the color of the plate changed to blue.

“Looks like there is no problem.”

This is some sort of criminal background check in this world.

Blue means no criminal record, red means you have a criminal record, and yellow means you have a criminal record but are being rehabilitated.

It is said that this plate harnesses the power of the God of Order themselves, so the results are guaranteed.

Pretty nifty. The existence of Gods really makes your world kind of easy.

“Once again, good day, sir, and welcome to the town of Lambda.”

Maybe because she found out I have no criminal record, the gatekeeper girl spoke more fluently than before.

“Thanks.”

I bowed a bit and entered the town.

“By the way, how do I get to the temple of the Fertility Goddess?”

“Ah, yes. Go straight down this road, then turn left at a huge street. That is the main street. You’ll find a building with splendid stonework on your left. That’s it.”

“I see. Thank you.”

“Uhm…!!”

As I was about to start walking away, the girl who was the gatekeeper stopped me with a voice that sounded like she had made up her mind.

“Hm?”

You’re… a man, right?”

“…? Yes, that’s right.”

Come to think of it, there aren’t many men in this world.

“Well, you know, take your time!”

With that, the gatekeeper’s daughter bowed her head vigorously.

Then her helmet, which was not the right size, came off and tumbled down.

“Ah… ah…!”

The gatekeeper girl tried to pick up the helmet in a panic, but out of her nervousness, she couldn’t get a good grip on it, and it rolled to my feet. I ended up picking it up myself.

“Ah, s-sorry! And t-th-thank you!!”

Even the way she stutters is really cute, this gatekeeper.

By the way, this girl had peculiar shoulder-length golden hair, and her eyes, though a bit sharp-looking, were of a pale blue color.

Her nose is straight, and her lips are thin.

Her white cheeks were slightly tinted red, which made me feel relieved.

By the way, she is about the same height as my chest, about 150 centimeters tall.

I can’t see much because of the leather breastplate, but I don’t think her breasts are that big.

“Hahaha, don’t mention it. Here. Keep up the good work.”

With that, I handed her back the helmet.

“Yes! Thank you!”

 She received it in a cheerful tone and smiled in return.

“…is it okay if I… with this girl?”

No, better not. If I start thinking like this, my son will definitely act up.

Just to be safe, let’s go first to the temple. Then start from there.

“I’ll see you later.”

“Yes, take care.”

I shook off my worldly desires and started walking toward the temple.
