Boeing stopped being an engineering company with the McDonnell-Douglas merger (aka: takeover). Boeing became just another business operating by the numbers for the quarter run by accountants not engineers.

I think EICAS or similar crew alerting systems should be standard on all commercial airplanes today, since they are very capable of supporting the flight crew in diagnosing and correcting aircraft malfunctions during flight. I completely agree that exemptions like these that Boeing are pushing for the 737 MAX family are just tiring to hear especially safety wise, although I can understand the economics reasons behind such exemptions. Although robust training can help pilots prioritize the most important tasks, a robust crew alerting system like EICAS and ECAMs can accurately warn pilots of the problem which I think will make misdiagnoses less likely and greatly simplify cockpit workload. If context clues are the only resource pilots use for troubleshooting problems, there will be a risk of misdiagnosis due to high cockpit workload or selective attention.
