Added 2023-09-01 16:30:54 +0000 UTCthis battery video has been a huge pain to edit since there is so much footage to deal with. that being said, it is turning out really cool! i'm going to start posting a few clips here as I finish it up.
In this clip, a threaded galvanized steel rod heats so quickly that the zinc boils off faster than it can burn in air. There was an initial peak current of 30kA, ending around 10kA when the rod finally exploded 0.2 seconds later.
This is lightning levels of current!

it's very hard to get around this but thankfully it isn't really a problem either. it's the initial small area of contact and oxide layer burning off, which allows a better connection to hold immediately after

2023-09-04 16:15:07 +0000 UTCJust when I was starting to wonder what forces would prompt it specifically to explode and bend instead of melt or merrily continue to blackbody away, in comes the explanation about the flash-boiling zinc. Finally an actual reason to say "come back, zinc!"
