Cheryl Strayed - the forth song I wrote on the guitar, can't believe it myself. These are the notes I wrote down for myself in order to not forget what I was composing. Maybe you can understand a little of them too - I bet amongst you are way more advanced guitarists than me, haha. But I'm enjoying to write songs with my simple western guitar, it feels very intimate as you're almost hugging the instrument while playing. And it's so chilled to just sit on your carpet or your bed plucking some strings - doesn't matter to which time of the day (or night ^^).
This song was inspired by the movie WILD, maybe you've heard about it. It's based on a great book by Cheryl Strayed, who walked the Pacific Crest Trail when she was facing a difficult time in her life. Afterwards she wrote a book about her experience and in which ways this hike influenced her life - which became a bestseller. A close friend of mine recommended the movie in the beginning of January and convinced me to watch it with her that night - and it really got me.
The next day, Monday morning the 8th of January, I was on the way back to Vienna, by train as usual - and I got inspired. The melody had popped up in my head the week earlier, but I didn't really know what to say with it yet - so this was the perfect combination. I just looked out of the window, recollected what I've seen the evening before and tried to grasp the emotions I felt during that movie. Inspiration can be literally around every corner, if you allow it, there is nothing to judge about where exactly you get your ideas from. Try it out, write about the flowers in your garden, the cars going by your window, the smile you've seen on a strangers face - and spin a story around it. The more you do that, the more comes out of you, creativity is almost like a muscle you can train. At least it feels like that for me... :)
