Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but the reason a Football game like Cowboys vs 49ers or some shit don't need a story is because the match is inherently a contest? Two teams play and the better team prevails because they played better. In Wrestling, the match is predetermined, its inherently NOT an actual contest so why does it matter who moves "up or down" in the rankings? They aren't actually competing, so why do "the rankings" matter, why would the outcome matter beyond fake rankings? I'm not really a Wrestling person (its fun to watch, but I've just never been that into it) but thats why the stories matter, because then the outcome affects the progression of that storyline and its continuing development, rather than "You see how Steve Punchman's doing this season? He's number 3 right now! Guess the producers decided he would win more times and be number 3 this year!" That doesn't seem particularly interesting. All the wrestling I've ever seen was fun cause it was like an Anime or something, like one-time I think I saw John Cena wrestle what seemed to be implyed to be almost a "shadow version" of himself who was like, a Swamp Warlock or something, it was fuckin sweet

He talks about his career like he’s a normal guy who spent some time in a weird, dangerous niche of the entertainment industry, just trying to save up money and not get hurt. It’s refreshing.

Wrestling feuds should be about money, titles, or a personal issue like 'we were a tag team that broke up'. Once it goes beyond that i am living in fear of someone else walking into the room when the show is on.
