Hidden Details: Dad of Boy Origins

Hey everyone! Welcome back to another Hidden Details blog!

I'm keeping it simple today by diving into our latest comic, Dad of Boy: Origins.

First of all: this comic performed absolutely PHENOMENAL. Especially on Instagram. At the time of writing this, it's sitting at 71,583 likes and 1401 comments. Our followers increased by almost 3000.

That's absolutely crazy. That's as many likes as the entire population of the town I grew up in. Numbers like these are a bit abstract to me. I just can't wrap my head around how many people actually seem to like our stuff. In any case, it's an extremely humbling and awesome experience. I can't thank you all enough!

Now that we've gotten the happy stuff out of the way, let's move into the "Abel is stupid"-stuff.

The chick in the comic is, apparently, not Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother. It's Freya, a completely different character. This is not intentional: this was a mistake on my part. A pretty big one.

So how did I mess up this badly? I'll tell you how: by not playing the game. I haven't actually played any God of War games except one of the PSP games (Chains of Olympus, I think?). I do consider myself familiar with the characters and the lore though, partly because my little brothers would play those games all the time and... well, because of the internet.

But, obviously, not familiar enough to NOT rely on Google to give me pictures of Atreus' mom. I knew he had a mother named Faye, so I very naively Googled "god of war faye". These are the pictures that come up:

Note how often Freya appears. In fact, she's the only female character to appear in these results (except for the badass ninja chick in the bottom right, no idea who that is). So stupid me was like "Oh, that must be her! Probably screenshots from a flashback or something!". So I ended up drawing Freya as Atreus' mom.

Whoops!

Maybe I'll edit the comic next week to fix it, because I don't like leaving errors unfixed. But it's still pretty cool the comic still managed to perform so well even with the glaring mistake.

Okay, glad to get that off my chest. Now let's take a look at some actual hidden details, shall we?

I thought it'd be cool to "celebrate" the God of War series by including weapons and artifacts from previous games in the backgrounds:

#1: Behind Fay- ehh... Freya, you can see Kratos' iconic Blades of Chaos hanging on the wall.

#2: In the next panel, you can see that Kratos and "Frayea" kept the Head of Helios he so violently ripped of Helios' shoulders in God of War III and are now using the head as a nice decorative candleholder.

#3: In the panel after that, you'll notice the Barbarian Hammer resting against the wall. Kratos used the Barbarian Hammer in God of War II.

#4: In the same panel, you'll notice the Amulet of the Fates hanging on the door, like some sort of good luck charm. The Amulet of the Fates appears in God of War II and can be used to slow down time while Kratos can keep moving at his regular speed. In God of War II, Kratos uses it in combat and to solve puzzles. What he's currently using it for, no idea. Maybe it'll give him an edge when he hears the garbage truck approaching but he forgot to put out the trash so he has to dash from his bed to the front porch last-minute.

#5: In the bottom right of the same panel, and I had to adjust this image a bit to make it more seeable, there's a Nemesis Whip just lying around the house. The Nemesis Whip appears in God of War III. I mean, you didn't expect Kratos to be tidy, did you?

And that's it! As I said, I wanted to keep it simple today. Hope you still enjoyed my ramblings about my mistakes and I'll see you next week!

Cheers!

- Abel
