possession (2025)

With this new narration for upstanding Patreon folks, I resisted the dangerous creative urge to make any story “improvements” and instead just focused on better audio. The music is different as well, because of the difficulty of recovering the original sources.

This version is longer not just because of slower pacing in general, but because I’ve stuck more closely to the original page text of the story and did not aggressively make small cuts to keep things tight, as I did 15 years ago (gahhh!). So we now have something a little more languorous—a bit longer than the tale justifies maybe, but even better for drifting off to sleep…

Oh, and also attached is a totally music-free edition of the story just for the purist in you.

I’ll try to keep the alternate narrations train running this year!

Music: “Blue as the Sky” by Michael Vignola, “I’m Still Weak” by Jordan Hatfield, and “First Morning” by Sero, all rights reserved.

From artist David Montano:

BONUS SHENANIGANS: If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “There’s no way I can go on in this world unless I can see what cute Pixar versions of Knifepoint Horror characters would look like,” take this extremely fancy trivia quiz created by friend of the podcast Parrot-in-Human-Suit. (I actually got #12 wrong, and very nearly blew a second one.)

Okay, back to work on a story for March—a pure first-person dose of traditional suspense this time.

Comments

THANK YOU for this one. This is one of my faves that you've written.

Marcel

I love how you talk about the pace being slower in this recording, where the protagonist is grievously wounded with a sword 1:40 into a 2 hour story. I get it, I get it.

paranewandrew

Fabulous, just fabulous

Dee Gunda

That's the only thing I could think of too communicate how jacked I am for this.

Screamed Hams

Screamed Hams

My all time favourite, one of your best by far.

Wayne

This is one of my favorites. Thanks for redoing it ❤️

Jennifer Davis

Coincidentally I watched that clip again about 4 days ago when Lost Highway popped up on... Pluto I think? Super eerie.

Soren Narnia

Oh yeah, that hum was quite mysterious. In the end I gave in to it as a kind of... sacrifice?

Soren Narnia

There is a hum that starts around 33:45 just fyi

Daniel Greene

Soren this is a clip of Robert Blake being COMPLETELY HORRIFYING in Lost Highway. Enjoy, everyone. https://youtu.be/qZowK0NAvig?si=ZHjCTnxZ46Ecr7yv

Emily T

Just did the little quiz. I missed a few answers but it still said I got everything right. Best quiz ever! P.S. the little Pixar villains were pretty cute

Alain Kapel

Oh that was forked up I love it.

Jfer

Possession is so real to me as someone who has suffered from depression throughout my life. Love this rerecording which I’ve been listening to in pieces before falling asleep at night. Also, I got 14/15 on the quiz, not bad!

Neha Lal

Love Dev! When it comes to creepy though, the guy who always brings it is Caleb Landry Jones, the maniacal brother in Get Out!

Lori K.

Favorite knifepoint story of all time. When I first listened to this one it really knocked me out so fully and more than any other horror story . Loooooove !

Noelle

Oh, sure, stump me on the name of any male actor under 35! Nominating Dev Patel.

Soren Narnia

Oh yes, the episode about the Hair Dye Annhilator.

Elliot Lem

Who do you all think should play Maurice? Someone sort of David Lynch-y? He spooks me the same way Robert Blake does in Lost Highway.

Emily T

These suggestions to play roles in a film version: Harry Dean Stanton, Iggy Pop, Tilda Swinton, Tom Waits and more?Damn y’all have GREAT taste, if I may say 💪🏼

Lori K.

I think there was an Unsolved Mysteries about it….

Soren Narnia

We still don’t know what happened to poor Peter?

Elliot Lem

…although Dinklage is on the shortlist

Lori K.

McShane ALWAYS gets my vote

Lori K.

:D you guys are hilarious

Lori K.

What a treat! I've listened to most of your Knifepoint stories, and Possession is still my favorite. I'll revisit it here and there, and it looks like I will be listening yet again. I love all the different layers to the story. I also love how it's not entirely clear if all of these weird occurrences are linked to one another, or just a series of unfortunate events.

Bradley Douglas

Peter Dinklage.

Soren Narnia

In the movie in my head, Peter is played by Harry Dean Stanton

Michael B. Jordan B. Peterson

Ok. Tilda Swinton for Father Hall? Or Ian McShane, with the mullet

Rebecca R

An absolute favorite—what a treat! Just finished a couple things and sending some images your way—two for possession—“the castle” and another, and a bonus…

David Montano

If Iggy drops out, I’m gonna go with Thomas Haden Church, but Tom Waits is also welcome to be Peter.

Soren Narnia

This has always been one of my favorite stories of yours, so this is basically Christmas 2 for me right now. Thank you!

Ariadne

You put that perfectly Lisa.

Nicole Michele

Thanks for the re-recording. I can't help but imagine Peter as Iggy Pop, possibly similar to his role in The Adventures of Pete and Pete. (Any adult who doesnt still watch kids tv is a liar, or has the wrong priorities.)

Rebecca R

always taking a reason to listen to possession again. thank you!

Olive

Idea-wise, it’s usually just a case of trying to connect anything unusual I come across or hear or read about to a horror element that could theoretically lie within. 99 times out of 100 it fizzles, but then bam, something will click. More about this will be in a recording I’m preparing in which I’ll ramble deeper about the process. Coming soon!

Soren Narnia

i didn’t remember this story at all, so this was such a treat to listen to! you have become one of my favorite writers during the past few years, and i would love to know what your process is when coming up with ideas for your stories :-) i really love writing too, but i tend to struggle with forming coherent stories (so i stick to poetry).

milena

I’d like to know the word of the day! Moonkeeper is my second favorite after possession.

Elliot Lem

Ha, I just noticed your avatar, wish Patreon would make these bigger….

Soren Narnia

This is about the amazing picture for "coming in March." Poor Sally, terrified when she thinks she's lost Jack to the Nightmare of Christmas.

Jill E Merrill

Thank you so much. Also, that quiz was HARD but I did appreciate the unhinged illustrations that went with it. Now, quick, someone create a quiz that tells me what my astrological sign is based on my favorite Knifepoint Horror story!

Emily T

I cannot thank you enough. This is the story that got me into KPH a decade ago and is still my favorite story. I’m so happy to have this new version. Thank you for taking the time to do this for us Patreon folks.

Elliot Lem

This is my favorite story of yours and I’m already loving the fresh narration. Thanks for such an excellent bonus!

Gwen Smith

Hands down, my absolute favorite Knifepoint you've ever written. Wonderful to hear it with the brighter audio - although, as a looooong time KH fan and 'purist', one of my favorite aspects of your audio recordings is that they are imperfect, crunchy, compressed. The atmosphere that those lower quality recordings creates sometimes makes your prose that much more disturbing. Especially with a good set of noise canceling headphones. No matter what, this story is my favorite, the most immersive quiet and unsettling. Bravo! Thank you so much for this!

Miss Crit

I love relistening to the older tales just for the comfort of your voice. What a treat! Thank you, sir!!

Lisa

Absolute stone cold classic! Thank you for this, I appreciate how going over old ground could prove frustrating for such a creative soul. But this is an absolute joy for me, so THANK YOU

Lee Wilkins

Yes, great for drifting off to sleep until we go down to the boiler room... (classic horror movie no-no!!!)

chris yun

What a way to start the day!! Thank you!! Literally the best. And yes, please keep the alternate narrations train whistle blowing!

Doug Reed

Was just thinking about relistening some older stories... And now here comes Possession version 2.0. Sending some virtual beer your way 🍻

Alain Kapel

Ah! You devil ;)
