Coming in July … plus, the final villain showdown.

Art by S. Patrick Brown, https://www.instagram.com/scalawagarts/

And here we are finally, at the Super Bowl of Nasty People and Things That Don’t Really Exist (Probably). The winner of this last poll decides which villain is to be represented by an eight-foot, 1,500-pound marble statue positioned at the visitor’s entrance of the Knifepoint Horror Botanic Gardens and Reflecting Pool in Heber City, Utah. Remember our facility for school trips, church outings, and corporate retreats!

And thanks, all, for your patience and your participation in the playoffs, which has helped to clue me in on what makes a memorable antagonist…..

And the winner is….?

Looking back over the stories, I see a lot of me trying to work through forgiving and being forgiven for the things we all did to each other when we were too young to realize the ramifications…

Soren Narnia

And then there’s the question, was the documentary interviewer also a villain in dredging up such adolescent awkwardness and outright pain so many years later just to make something entertaining for an audience?

Soren Narnia

Maybe it's cos it's personal on my behalf, but, after re-listening to DNK just this morning, I have to say the Droditch wasn't even the true villain of the story; just a force of nature/cosmic energy of some sort. The real villain was Lisa. Maybe it's because, as I said, of personal experience where, in my HS yrs (85-89), I always had the wonderful luck of crushing on or even falling for girls who, in the end, might've been nice to me but either didn't come even close to feeling the same way, not even in the least bit interested (the dreaded 'you're a sweet guy, aka DNK') or, in one case, knew my feelings but, in her own cruel manner, flaunted her 'bad boy' bf towards me once she had an inkling that I had liked her. Ppl today, of course, like to twist those adolescent feelings around and claim the guy (or girl, and it CAN be a girl) is being a creep. But it's different when one is 15-15 yo and when one is grown. That Lisa admits that the guy who was so besotten w/her that he thought nothing of his young life to save hers would still think of him as an irritant & a deterrent to who she wanted to date, decades later, isn't a new or unusual thing. It's how ppl are. But hopefully the guy doesn't listen to the dvd commentary. I think back 35 yrs and, being reminded of fickle teenagers compared to the (in) curable Romantic I was (very cured now), I'm glad there wasn't a Demon that I felt I had to save the girl who ended up twisting her knife in my heart for her 17yo jollies. But that's just me.

I am disappointed The Baker did not make it to the final four…

Jeffrey Young

Yes but in a real showdown we know the tarp would suffocate all these other mofos

Bernard Ng

Phew! Ty :)

Lori K.

She left a note on another post recently, she’s on it!

Soren Narnia

Anyone know where Jill is?? I always scan the comments for her insights! Hope she’s alright.

Lori K.

It always fits without fail, and I think it does have a permanent subtle effect on the way I imagine things as I actually record the words... I haven't changed any details on the page because of what I see in the art, but what it does is keep me zeroed in on the mood and the atmosphere as I narrate; the art whispers to me, "Remember, the story has to come out at least this evocatively." (In a couple of instances, I've realized there is no way I can get things as scary as the art suggests, ha!)

Soren Narnia

Do you find that the art typically “fits” what you were going for in the stories, or goes in a different direction? Are there ever any times when the art influences the writing?

Ryan Fahey

Interestingly, I tell S. Patrick Brown as little as I possibly can about the stories he creates art for, so he's working in the dark by feel much of the time.....

Soren Narnia

The art adds another dimension to your stories, but I prefer walking into the stories unaffected. How do you choose?

Eva-Lotta Romfelt

I already have a warehouse full of unsold Droditch jello molds, ugh.

Soren Narnia

Justice for Tarp!

Thorne Russell

Damn, and to think we almost had the Droditch Funko-Pop!

Thorne Russell

Well, only the people seem malevolent on purpose. So it is a solid Karen. Father Hall delved into the supernatural, and he is evil, but not necessarily my neighbor that could harm people in real life. An awfully dull way to judge villains as it takes the fun out of fiction. Oh, well. Better get back to my pet tarp. We like finding secrets and then hiding them. My sweet tarp!

Mechelle

Part of the Father Hall choice for me at least is that Possession shares the rare distinction of being a "bad vibes"/"feel bad" Knifepoint Horror story that I haven't summoned the ability to listen to more than twice, along with Sideswipe, Endgame, Late Checkout, and Rink. One way I'd try to sell my friends on these though is that they all manage to achieve this effect without any of the cynicism or gratuitous ugliness that a lot of movies with those qualities use.

Charles Town's End

That’s where i found it and you can watch the other BBC Christmas ghost stories— they are all great!

Emily T

Cool. Cuz that’s on YouTube.

Michael Fallon

Ice Cart. ....of DOOM

Jfer

Ain’t no stillness like a wretched stillness!

Soren Narnia

I've been planning a trip to Heber just to see all the spots where they filmed Dumb and Dumber... perfect! Day one I will stand in wretched stillness near the reflecting pool at dusk, ardently aware of the inescapable evils in this world. Day two is skinny dipping.

Jfer

My initial reaction was to go with the malevolent Father Hall, but I went back and re-read tarp and…its tarp. Its tarp. Oh my God…it’s TARP.

Michael Fallon

That is why there is a circle of hell called Pandemonium.

Oni

Woop Woop Tarpy mentioned!

Thorne Russell

Let’s Go Tarpy! Let’s Go!

Thorne Russell

Pandora is an old maritime word. Once in a while clipper ships would be overrun with panda bears.

colin frasier

I’ve got the #DroditchItch

Ben Englander

Wait, wasn’t it Iditarod who opened the box, and Pandora who invented the cotton gin? I get these historical details so confused

Soren Narnia

Pandora opening the box, Eve taking the apple. my wife competing in the Iditarod, coven of French nuns befriending a "fawn".....women

colin frasier

that also includes out door Christmas decorations that resemble "fawns" or short reindeers.

colin frasier

yeah me too, this is a luxury i cant afford. i am stomping the heads of baby deer into oblivion before and after work, everyday for years now. you dandies' sit on your ass and vote on the scary pants wetty! i am doing my part keeping us safe. you are welcome America! oh my daughter just informed me that a baby deer is called a fawn. i stand corrected. thank you daughter.

colin frasier

…and I should know, as the one who’s here after every poll, lamenting who’s not on it. I am no tarpy, but I am a bit of a wet blanket ;)

Lori K.

Nope

Lori K.

It’s highly probable I missed it, but did the coachman from “Trail” or Lawrence Braid from “Attraction” make the list earlier in the contest?

Brian Quinn

Father hall my god possession still gives me shivers

Noelle

These creepies are from 'tarp,' 'staircase,' 'possession', and 'D.N.K.'

Soren Narnia

Where are all these stories?

Michael Benson

We be were thinking of you today. Not sure how B to add a pic. They film that show I got pretty last summer near us. So we dropped in for a selfie. Not far from The Summoners.

Michael Benson

Tarp all the way for me! Creepy af!

Frank Schumpert

It's the Droditch that scares me most.

Josh Draper

Where’s Basil B on this list? Or wait, did I seriously misunderstand Doggo…

Tyler Ellis

I love all that British folk horror! And obviously, tarps.

Emily T

Oh, that’s right. I am referring to the old black and white one with Michael Hordern playing the professor.

Emily T

Wait. There are apparently two versions of that story on the BBC series. Are you referring to the old or newer one?

Michael Fallon

I'm only voting The Droditch with EXTREME protest that Branko Kingdom didn't make it to the playoffs.

Tanya S.

Great artwork for the upcoming story!

Henry Linehan

Yes! I thought there was one I failed to remember.

Clifford Greer Jr.

He first appeared in 'possession' but reared his head strangely in 'mother'....

Soren Narnia

If one wanted to revisit the Father Hall stories, could they be reminded of those titles within which he is mentioned?

Clifford Greer Jr.

I should clarify that due to budget concerns, it may not be real marble so much as something called marble-onium, which is basically… well, cork.

Soren Narnia

I think the Droditch would make a very cool looking statue. Though Karen would be super cute with her little monster claws.

Jennifer Gatlin

I can’t help but be keen to see an eight-foot, 1,500-pound marble statue of an evil tarp…

Helena Tkalez

Not at all unexpected to see Father Hall at the top. The podcast's had its share of amazing villains, and he's masterfully written. My fav is the thing from vision's end, even if it is only described in detail in one occurence. But that sight haunts me still.

Alain Kapel

We may have to choose between installing an aquatic horror and having an Italian ice cart on Saturdays.

Soren Narnia

Yeah, that short film was awesome, love the BBC ghost stories and that one is easily among the best for me (alongside Signalman and A Warning to the Curious).

Alain Kapel

Well, I voted for it because A. It will be much easier to carve out of marble than the other things. And B. Because I just had to clean a bunch of tarps that were laying around collecting god-knows-what and I can see now how easily some evil might get trapped and condemn my family to generations of torment. Also, will the reflecting pool have an aquatic horror lurking beneath the surface? Because it should.

Sara Fleming

You are not incorrect, sir.

Trafford Burgess

You must've not seen the poster for Herbie Goes Bananas

Jeffrey Young

Architect of his own demise after a Snapple bottle rolled behind the brake pedal.

Jeffrey Young

Father Hall's origin story would make an awesome story on its own. I've often daydreamt about a sprawling Naroth-esque adaptation of possession whose third act transports us to a logging camp in the frozen Up Yonder

Jeffrey Young

One of the most frightening and effective ghost stories I’ve ever seen. I like it better than the actual story: the professor’s performance is so good (and almost unbearable to watch).

Emily T

Awwwww you had to mention that movie, now I have to watch it for like the third time this year….

Soren Narnia

I loved visiting the Botanic Gardens last year! Made for a great Christmas card. They did a great job with the renovations and scraping off all that brown stuff

Jason Cournoyer

That villain would be The Man Who Never Cleans Out His Car

Soren Narnia

Look, I know the logical answer is Father Hall, but the whole #justicefortarp movement? It really grew on me. Plus, if anyone ever watched that BBC Christmas ghost story version of “Whistle and I’ll Come to You,” you know that sheets and sheet-like wraiths can absolutely give you nightmares.

Emily T

I admit... I fervently waited for you to include yourself on that list. Mwah hah hah 😘

buddhapugz

True, I worry about what this new generation intends to cover its old rowboats with!

Soren Narnia

Lack of votes for The Tarp is staggering and I think says a lot about the state of our country.

Rebecca Zubrovich

Spooky. I'd just checked Patreon a few minutes ago in case I'd missed the "coming in July" post!

Art has never made me so excited for a story
