For this illustration, I referenced quite a lot of photos from a different photobook. Still, modifying the poses of real people to fit character illustrations was a tough process. I found myself wondering: why are character heads so big and their facial areas so small...?

I rendered it assuming a strong side light. I worked in detail on the important parts of the rendering, but since I'm not used to that process yet, it was quite a struggle. I think I did fairly well with rough blocking of the large forms, but once I got into the finer parts, it took much more time, and I don’t even remember how many times I had to repeat my brush strokes for smooth rendering. I also used an airbrush at times, though I don’t recommend it—it tends to ruin the subtle texture that skin directionality gives. So I think it’s best to use the airbrush only selectively, when the shadow areas feel too flat.

Alternatively, since the recent trend seems to favor expressing skin with simple color areas rather than fully rendering every detail, I feel it’s fine to use the airbrush more assertively when spreading colors in that context. In other words, whether or not to fully detail the skin texture comes down to a matter of stylistic choice.
