I went through quite a bit of trial and error to draw Hipa in a squatting pose while researching. About 30% of the drawing time was spent just on that process.
It was a lot of time, but by drawing the same pose repeatedly, I started to understand certain aspects more clearly. As I redrew the sketch based on that knowledge, I gradually figured out what was truly important and what was unnecessary. It felt like a kind of "refinement" in my own way.
For me, the key elements of the squatting pose were the three-dimensional understanding between the pelvis and the thighs, and the proportion between the legs and the torso. On the other hand, the angles of the legs or the flexibility of the pelvis were things I could adjust freely to suit the composition.
As for the coloring process, I simplified it as much as possible. I began by dividing the object into light and shadow, then gradually refined each area’s form. I added ambient occlusion and highlights along the way.
For materials that reflect light well or transparent materials like glass or liquid, I searched online for similar references and used them as guides.
