For this illustration, I aimed to create contrast by using various types of lines and textures. Like Sekoshi, the softness of a woman’s skin and hair is primarily represented with long, flowing lines that convey a sense of speed. I focused on using soft lines to enhance this feeling.
However, I believe that abstract concepts like “softness” only gain meaning when there is a clear point of comparison. With this in mind, I placed a stark contrast in the background. While it doesn’t carry much thematic meaning, I included a structure of broken reinforced concrete to further emphasize the softness of Sekoshi’s skin and her flowing hair. The shattered concrete, drawn with short and slow lines, provides contrast not only in line quality but also in texture—its rough and solid nature accentuates the smoothness of the skin.
I think rendering with lines means utilizing various types—slow lines, fast lines, short lines, long lines—to define an object’s characteristics. If this approach is mastered, it may even be possible to create rich and expressive artwork using only lines.
