Favorite Painting Surfaces | (And how I make a starting sketch)

Hey, how is it going, guys?

In this video I answer some of the questions I get about the surfaces I like to paint on and how I lay out a starting sketch!

Hi Michael, thank you for joining! I believe that to paint a realistic portrait of someone you shouldn’t overly define features but rather make them more subtle and soft, and it’s especially true when painting children. Because looking at a person in real life you wouldn’t see very harsh lines or edges, and yet that’s the number one mistake people make when painting portraits. Also, you should pay attention to values (how dark or light the colors are), that’s what creates the shape of the face, creates the form, and that’s why it’s really important to get the values right if you want the painting to look realistic and not flat. Other than that, make sure that the proportions are correct, children’s faces are smaller and the anatomy is a little bit different from adults’ faces. Hope this answers your question! Daria

HI, Daria, I'm new to Patreon and to your site. Do you have any tips to painting a child's portrait? Thank you for your time.
